Northern Class 769 'Flex' 769424 threads its way out of Southport approaching the long-closed station at Southport St Lukes working the 11.16 Southport to Alderley Edge service. Once an electrified section of railway (1904) to Churchtown and Crossens on the line to Preston was closed to traffic in September 1964. The live rails were kept in-situ until 1970 as far as Meols Cop for access to the electric car workshops situated in the middle of the triangular layout at Meols Cop.
Had the electrified section of the line to Crossens been retained, it would now be part of the Merseyrail Northern Line network.
