Joanne has been collecting USN flatware for a long time. She recently got these eight spoons and a nice note from the PO that they were from her Grandfather who obtained them from the USS North Carolina in WWII.
Joannes father was on the USS Franklin during the War.
Returning home after a photo jaunt to rural central Kentucky with Universal Stopping Point, I found that I have POWER at my house after a seven day blackout!
Woo hoo!
I can FLICKR again. And do laundry. And make coffee. And run the dishwasher. And vacuum the floors. Run the air conditioner! Restock the refrigerator. Did I mention FLICKR?
Smile, indeed!
I love bakelite (as you can tell)! We were using these for everyday, but they don't go in the dishwasher, so the boys requested that we use our "modern" silverware.

Attempting a piece based on a style and techniques developed by Kelley Knickerbocker of Rivenworks Mosasic Studio. A year or so ago, I became fascinated with her unique approach to mosaics that emphasize the many interesting qualities of glass. I want to take a course from her, but have not yet been able to work it out with my schedule and travel plans, however I will be taking her workshop some day...
Detail view of the center focal "window". The stainless steel bits are knife hilts from a bunch of flatware I found that have a bamboo motif. My approach in this piece strays somewhat from the "classic" Kelley Knickerbocker style, but hers was certainly the inspiration that led to my aspirations to try this piece — and now to my desperation to TAKE HER CLASS!
You can see Kelley's work on the web and find her class schedule at:

MATERIALS: stained glass scraps and recycled stainless steel flatware on salvaged mirror on top of 'environmental' MDF. The size is only 8" x 11". "Steel Grass" is a colloquial term for bamboo, which is a grass and grows strong as steel here in the tropics.
Opened my bottle of Reed's Craft Ginger Beer I purchased the other day on my visit to Knox Walls at Emory Place and Three Rivers Market.
