Garlic is a type of plant that people eat for food. Garlic is related to onions, shallots, and leeks. It has a very strong flavor and smell, so people don't use too much of it. Most of the time, people use it as a flavoring so that it helps make a food taste better. Superstitious people believe that it can be used to keep vampires away. It is used as herbal medicine in the treatment of cold and flu, and has side effects of heart burn, flatulence and sweating.

WILD CARROT

Also known as Queen Anne's Lace. The seeds are a beneficial antiseptic diuretic useful in the treatment of cystitis and prostatitis. Also, the seeds are used for the prevention and washing out of gravel and urinary stones. As a diuretic, it helps with dropsy and the elimination of uric acid from the body (thus, used for gout). The seeds, which are high in volatile oil, are soothing to the digestive system, useful for colic and flatulence. Some herbalists employ the seeds as an implantation preventer. The root is very high in Vitamin A and minerals. The juice is reputed to have anti-cancer activity. The root helps to expel worms and is an effective antacid for heartburn and gastritis. A poultice of the root is excellent for first aid, especially for itchy skin. CAUTION: Queen Anne's Lace has several poisonous look alikes. Do NOT use this herb (seeds) with pregnancy.

About this species

Elephant yam is a striking aroid with a flower spike crowned with a bulbous maroon knob and encircled by a fleshy maroon and green-blotched bract. The solitary leaf, which emerges after the flowering parts, resembles a small tree.

Amorphophallus paeoniifolius has been in cultivation throughout tropical Asia for centuries. The tubers are the third most important carbohydrate source after rice and maize in Indonesia. They are also consumed widely in India and Sri Lanka, although elsewhere they are seen as a famine crop, to be used when more popular staples, such as rice, are in short supply.

Elephant yam belongs to the same genus as the crowd-pulling titan arum (Amorphophallus titanum). It should not be confused with Dioscorea species, which are also known by the common name yam, but belong to a different plant family (Dioscoreaceae). In particular it should not be confused with elephant’s foot yam (Dioscorea elephantipes) from South Africa.

Medicinal Uses

Elephant yam has medicinal properties and is used in many Ayurvedic (traditional Hindu) preparations. The tubers are considered to have pain-killing, anti-inflammatory, anti-flatulence, digestive, aphrodisiac, rejuvenating and tonic properties. They are traditionally used in the treatment of a wide range of conditions including parasitic worms, inflammation, coughs, flatulence, constipation, anaemia, haemorrhoids and fatigue.

While the landscape assumes the unmistakable traces of autumn, wildflowers persist in highlighting the woodland edges and roadsides. Looking much like a sunflower which has lost or forgotten its petals, the tansy, another member of the aster family and yet another Eurasian native comfortably finding a home in North America is one of the autumn stalwarts. It also possesses one of the more fascinating histories I've found, a few examples of its ancient and varied uses recited here.

Common tansy and related species have been used for centuries as a type of embalming used to ward off worms and insects. It was packed into coffins, wrapped in funeral winding sheets, and tansy wreaths were placed on the dead. By the 19th century the use of tansy at funerals was so prevalent in New England that people began to despise tansy for its mournful and morbid association with death. Its use as an insect repellant has been confirmed and is still used today in conjunction with other elements.

During the Middle Ages and later, high doses were used to induce abortion and warnings exist today relative to its possibility of causing miscarriage. It truly is fascinating how much of the herbal lore from centuries past has been found to have application (in some part) yet today.

Long associated with Lent, tansy cakes were superstitiously served to prevent intestinal worms brought on by eating fish. It was also thought to have the added Lenten benefit of controlling flatulence brought on by days of eating fish, beans, and peas....a malady I did not realize was confined to this season...

I have always had negative views about the wheel-forward variant of the Wright StreetLite bus type. However, with the sharper protuberance of the bumper edges and the white displays, these buses are significantly better than the previous batch for route 462.

Route 192 has been using its Arriva London buses, its buses loaned in by Go-Ahead London: London General to cover for the delay of these new buses. However, they have finally arrived, not just with an improved design, but with improved performance as well.

Maybe due to being a shorter vehicle, the driveline is improved from the Wright StreetLite door-forward variants found on routes 219, and fellow Northumberland Park (NP) routes 327 and 491. The flatulence of the suspension on application of acceleration is absent and in its place is a lighter and faster bus.

"couple of dozen talented tradespeople descended on an old corrugated iron barn in the Hunter Valley, near the small historical township of Morpeth New South Wales.

This site was owned by Mr Ray Mudd who at 74 years of age assured 'the group that' the structure hadn't seen a coat of paint in his lifetime. Mr Mudd was an enthusiastic participant in this sign restoration project from the very first mention of it...as were the local heritage committee of Morpeth."

Some History of Dr Morse's Indian Root Pills.

"Dr. Morse's Indian Root Pills have their genesis in William Henry Comstock's father, Edwin P. Comstock, who founded a drug company in New York City in 1833.

The Indian Root Pills were first formulated and manufactured in 1854 by Andrew B. Moore, who was then operating under the name A.B. Moore in Buffalo, New York. Rights to the pills were then transferred through a number of different business partnerships under the control of Moore, Andrew J. White, Baldwin L. Judson, George Wells Comstock and his nephew, William Henry Comstock.

Dr. Morse's Indian Root Pills 'became' one of the most successful and enduring products to be manufactured and marketed in North America as part of the lucrative patent medicine industry, which thrived during most of the 19th and 20th centuries. Its manufacturer claimed the pills contained herbal ingredients that would help "cleanse the blood," as "impurity of the blood" was believed to be the cause of all disease. WIKIPEDIA

Stories suggesting that the origin of the medications formula lay in native American folklore were first disseminated as early as the late 1850's, but in fact were entirely fabrication. There never was a Dr. Morse. The originator of these pills was Andrew B. Moore.

Prescription of Dr Morse's Root Pills continued until at least the 1940's but mostly declined soon after World War 1.

The Root Pills were "recommended as a cure for biliousness, dyspepsia, constipation, sick headache, scofula, kidney disease, liver complaint, jaundice, piles, dysentery, colds, boils, malarial fever, flatulence, foul breath, eczema, gravel, worms, female complaints, rheumatism, neuralgia, la grippe, palpitation, and nervousness..."

Originally the formula was of course a closely guarded secret but by the 1930's it was revealed to be a concoction of "Aloes, Mandrake, Gambage, Jalap and Cayenne Pepper." REFERENCE

In 1885 the first Dr Morse's Root Pills advertisement appeared in Australia. It was in the form of a hand painted sign able to be viewed along the Melbourne to Ballarat railway journey.

· In the Philippines, macerated fresh leaves applied externally to burns.

· Leaves are bruised and applied to centipede and scorpion bites. Also, applied to temples and forehead for headache, help in place by a bandage.

· Leaves in infusion or as syrup used as aromatic and carminative; used for dyspepsia and also as a cure for asthma.

· The Malays used the plant juice or decoction for pains around the areas of the heart or abdomen.

As an infusion, 50 to 60 grams to a pint of boiling water, and drink the tea, 4 to 5 glasses a day. For children, 1/2 cup 4 times daily.

· For otalgia (ear aches), pour the fresh, pure juice into the ear for 10 minutes.

· For carbuncles, boils, sprains, felons, painful swellings: Apply the poultice of leaves to the affected area, four times daily.

· For sore throats, a decoction of two tablespoonfuls of dried leaves to a pint of boiling water, taken one hour before or after meals.

· In India, leaves are used traditionally for bronchitis, asthma, diarrhea, epilepsy, nephro-cystolithiasis, fever, indigestion and cough. Also used for malarial fever, hepatopathy, renal and vesicle calculi, hiccup, helminthiasis, colic, and convulsions.

· The Chinese used the juice of leaves with sugar, for cough in children, asthma and bronchitis, epilepsy and convulsive disorders.

· Leaves are applied to cracks at the corners of the mouth, for thrush, headaches; against fever as a massage or as a wash.

· Used for bladder and urinary afflictions, and vaginal discharges.

· Used as carminative, given to children for colic.

· In Bengal, used for coli and dyspepsia.

· Expressed juice applied around the orbit to relieve conjunctival pain.

Woman cannot live on Cornflakes alone. Or can she?

I mostly eat cereal. Mostly.

And not even the really healthy roughage filled ones neither, no, I have IBS (Irritable bowel syndrome), or what men call, ‘That thing all women claim to have when they occasionally fart or spend a long time in the toilet.’ Roughage type cereals play havoc with irritable bowels. Irritable bowel - what a title, it sounds like a woman’s problem, the man’s version would be ‘grouchy guts’.

My diet has evolved around finding foods that I can eat that won’t give me tummy ache, a great big balloon belly, make me produce any noxious gases and won’t repeat on me for the next week.

Funnily enough, cake, puddings, chocolate, wine and crisps don’t trouble my innards.

Interspersed with the desserts and booze I like to eat a balanced diet, and by balanced I mean bland. I went to one of those food allergy people once, he pressed little test tubes on my arm and decided that spinach and avocado were the route of all my problems – I almost never ate spinach or avocado, but I continued to not eat them from that day onward.

For over 30 years I have managed to keep myself entertained with the various possible textures of Kellogg’s Cornflakes, some days crunchy, some days I let them go soggy, some days I crush them up really tiny so they are like the dust pile that you get when you reach the dregs of the packet and get those weird bits of corn kernel that get stuck under your gums.

As a child I would sit at the kitchen table and devour every word on the packet along with every flake in my bowl. I was hungry for input first thing in the morning; I would build a wall blocking my brother from view and search for a new paragraph that I could read over and over. The amount of times I read the ingredients and nutrition information in my lifetime has meant that I am far too familiar with the words niacin, thiamin and riboflavin. As for the recommended serving size of 30g – that is one of those pathetic Kellogg’s variety pack boxes, my portion size is closer to the entire box set of 8.

At school when asked the obligatory playground question, “If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?”

‘jam tarts’ ‘crisps’ ‘chicken nuggets’ ‘sherbert dibdabs’… no, I thought carefully and chose cereals – ‘As long as I could have all the variants I would be happy as could be.

But over the years my irritable gut has rejected cereal after cereal, Shreddies, Shredded wheat, Alpen, Weetabix. If, after a bowl of one of these wheat infested brands I was to experience even the slightest discomfort or the tiniest of ‘pops’ then it was struck off the list. And now because I have worked myself into a fibre fearful frenzy I trust only my less gluteny cereals, in other words Kellogg’s Cornflakes and Rice Krispies – I even take a mobile box (500g instead of 1kg) out in the car with me to work with a plastic bowl and milk so that I can stop in a layby and sit chomping whilst staring into space.

Like Mel Gibson and his Catcher in the Rye obsession in Conspiracy Theory I have a compulsion to buy Kellogg’s Cornflakes whenever I pass a supermarket. I can‘t bear the thought that I might run out, or not get a full, mixing bowl, bowl for my next meal.

But it has to be Kellogg’s. In the news recently a man had gone around the world eating Cornflakes in every country – eating ‘home’ branded cornflakes in every country – traitor. I won’t eat an inferior brand - stale, cardboardy, synthetic - getting through a 30g bowl of a competitor requires throat massage to encourage peristalsis, my oesophagus recognising and rejecting the imposter.

So like the Slimfast adverts:

“I have Cornflakes for breakfast, Cornflakes for lunch and a proper dinner – as long as it’s bland.”

But I also have an issue with wolfing my food. It is nothing to do with fear that the rest of the pack will steal it, or lack of time. . . truth is that while I’m eating I love that sensation of piling in delicious mouthful after delicious mouthful, enjoying a mouth literally FULL of something, gorging on sensations. That is something a diminutive, elegant, partial forkful slipped neatly between minutely parted lips just cannot equal. I also hate letting food get cold – when I’m cooking the food is tipped straight out of the sizzling pan, lugged out of the oven and upended onto the plate whilst lip-scorchingly hot. Meanwhile t’other half likes to spend twenty minutes making pretty rice castles and resting meat before creating an oriental fan shape so that the finished article looks beauteous but is at very best lukewarm. My platefuls come out searing hot and hideously ugly.

When pudding is ready, we dish it out in the kitchen together adding the desired accompaniments; ice cream, cream, more cream, custard etc, and each choosing our special spoons, I then head into the living room first as I am not arranging my food a la Masterchef. He follows moments later and by the time he has arrived and settled in his sunken bum print on the sofa I have finished my pudding and the bowl sits scraped and barren whilst he is yet to dip his spoon.

I have a massive problem when enjoying a ‘day out’ in that there is almost nothing I can eat in the daytime that won’t cause issues. Once I have a stomach lined with alcohol then all the rules change and I can safely gorge on most things but, much as I like alcohol, my rule is no booze before tiffin time – 5 o’clock, or 4 o’clock if I’m depressed. I can’t very well take Cornflake filled Tupperware with me so if I go into London for a romantic day out it inevitably ends with a stalemate on a Bridge, staring out numbly into the shitty water while he berates me because I wouldn’t eat from any of the Moroccan/Ethiopian/Punjabi street food stalls.

Which has led me to wonder if I am alone in this, is there a market out there for ‘safe’ food that can be eaten on dates with no digestive repercussions?

Typically the kind of food you get in places that couples go to is man food, that is why it is called the Men – u.

It’s all hog roasts and pulled things. Congealed blood and gristle on a bed of flatulence, deconstructed goat intestines knitted into a scotch egg bonnet, served on a paving slab.

Women on dates look down the MEN-U with panic whilst maintaining flirty nonchalance, “Oh there’s so much to choose from!” in fake delight “It might take me a while to decide, why don’t you order us another drink while I read through the menu.”

Instead of a myriad of lovely plates of food they see:

I want to set up a restaurant that women can go to on first dates, it would be called ‘Bland’ and nothing on the menu would be offensive, either to her or to him – because although he won’t care that his badly disguised half swallowed belches have a putrid stench of rotting burgers after every champagne burp, she will.

Tower Transit route 444: Chingford Station - Turnpike Lane, Bus Station

Departed Chingford Station (B), towards Station Road / Chingford Station (E)

Tower Transit purchased WV46101-46111 for Lea Interchange (LI) route 444 when they won the route from Arriva London earlier this year.

These are interesting buses. They have a different engine sound to all other Wright StreetLites in London, Daimler the engine supplier for all StreetLites with Euro 6 spec. The buses drive like a Volvo B5LH with quicker gear changes.

While they might not be the most comfortable Wright StreetLites in London, they are definitely better in driveline which is devoid of the infamous flatulence within the suspension upon braking accustomed to previous StreetLites with Go-Ahead London.

The WVs are very good buses that suit their route excellently and out of Tower Transit's first three tender wins, I highly recommend the 444 over the 212 and 488.

Monarda (bee balm, horsemint, oswego tea, or bergamot) is a genus consisting of roughly 16 species of erect, herbaceous annual or perennial plants in the Lamiaceae, indigenous to North America. Ranging in height from 1 to 3 feet (0.2 to 0.9 m), the plants have an equal spread, with slender and long-tapering (lanceolate) leaves; the leaves are opposite on stem, smooth to nearly hairy, lightly serrated margins, and range from 3 to 6 inches (7 to 14 cm) long. In all species, the leaves, when crushed, exude a spicy, highly fragrant oil. Of the species listed, M. didyma (Oswego Tea) contains the highest concentration of this oil.[1]

The genus was named for Nicolás Monardes who wrote a book in 1574 describing plants found in the New World.

Several Bee Balm species (Monarda fistulosa and Monarda didyma) have a long history of use as a medicinal plants by many Native Americans including the Blackfeet, Menominee, Objibwe, Winnebago and others. The Blackfeet Indians recognized the strong antiseptic action of these plants, and used poultices of the plant for skin infections and minor wounds. A tea made from the plant was also used to treat mouth and throat infections caused by dental caries and gingivitis. Bee Balm is the natural source of the antiseptic Thymol, the primary active ingredient in modern commercial mouthwash formulas. The Winnebago used a tea made from bee Balm as a general stimulant. Bee Balm was also used as a carminative herb by Native Americans to treat excessive flatulence. [2][3]

Although somewhat bitter due to the thymol content in the plants leaves and buds, the plant has a very similar flavor to oregano, to which it is closely related. Bee Balm was traditionally used by Native Americans as a seasoning for wild game, particularly birds. The plants are widespread across North America and can be found in moist meadows, hillsides, and forest clearings up to 5,000 feet in elevation. [2]

Monarda species include annual and perennial upright growing herbaceous plants with lanceolate to ovate shaped leaves. The flowers are tubular with bilateral symmetry and bilabiate; with upper lips narrow and the lower ones broader and spreading or deflexed. The flowers are single or in some cultivated forms double, generally hermaphroditic with 2 stamens. Plant bloom in mid to late-summer and the flowers are produced in dense profusion at the ends of the stem and/or in the stem axils, the flowers typically are in crowded into head-like clusters with leafy bracts. Flower colors vary, with wild forms of the plant having crimson-red to red, pink and light purple. M. didyma has bright, carmine red blossoms; M. fistulosa -- the "true" wild bergamot -- has smokey pink flowers. M. citriodora and M. pectinata have light lavender to lilac-colored blooms and have slightly decreased flower quantities. Both species are commonly referred to as "Lemon Mint." There are over 50 commercial cultivars and hybrids, ranging in color from candy-apple red to pure white to deep blue, but these plants tend to be smaller than wild species, and often developed to combat climatic or pest conditions. "M.didyma" species can grow up to 6 feet tall. Seed collected from hybrids — as with most hybridized plants — does not produce identical plants to the parent.

The Monarda plants prefer full sun and moist yet well-drained soil. Plants established in partial shade or filtered sun have higher incidences of rapid horizontal spread and flower less. An aggressive plant in the South-eastern United States, Bergamots can grow in a wide variety of soil conditions. Powdery mildew, rust, and (rarely) tobacco mosaic viruses disrupt established plants on occasion, but the plants are in general highly resistant to most wilts and viruses and are not easily damaged. Used most frequently in areas in need of naturalization, Monarda is often used in beds and borders to encourage and increase the appearance of hummingbirds, pollinating insects, and because of oils present in its roots is sometimes used to companion plant around small vegetable crops susceptible to subterranean pests. While seed should be stratified briefly before starting, seed may be cast directly or started in coldframes or greenhouses at soil temperatures approaching 70° Fahrenheit. Generally, propagation occurs by hardwood and softwood cuttings, root cuttings, layering, and division; the latter, quite frequently, is the most popular method out of necessity: the plant should be divided every 3 to 5 years to reduce spread, keep the central core of the plant healthy, preclude root rot, and improve air circulation about the foliage.

Bee balm is considered a good plant to grow with tomatoes, ostensibly improving both health and flavor. It also is a good companion plant in general, attracting pollinators and some predatory/parasitic insects that hunt garden pests.

Monarda species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including case-bearers of the genus Coleophora including C. heinrichella (feeds exclusively on M. fistulosa), C. monardae (feeds exclusively on Monarda spp) and C. monardella (feeds exclusively on M. fistulosa).

The Bergamot of the Monarda species should not be confused with the popular flavoring used in Earl Grey tea. Dried leaves may be used for teas or aromatherapies, but the odor is subtly different from Citrus bergamia, the Earl Grey flavoring. For medicinal usage, Monarda has been known to treat headaches and fevers by infusing crushed leaves in boiling water.

Paplatine: I must admit, these eggs bring back memories of when my mother would serve them on special occasions. But hers were never this tasty. My compliments to the chef.

Fett: What? Your mother served them on... but how do these remind you of those?

Palpatine: Surely you noticed the faint purple tint. I immediately recognized them, and suspect you were trying to trick me in to eating them.

Fett: What? Trick you? They're just deviled eggs.

Palpatine: Yes, trick me. These eggs have unusual side effects on anyone who eats too many. They differ from person to person. From your incessant giggling I assume that's what they do to you - make you giggle.

Fett: Sorry sir, I'll stop giggling. And I'm still not following you. They're just eggs.

Palpatine: No, they're from a chameleon like bird creature, I don't recall it's name, but because of it's biochemistry, when ingested in any form, effects everyone differently. Its eggs are the worst.

Fett; OK, lets assume these are those eggs. Why would you still eat them? And what side effect did they have on you?

Palpatine: As I recall, they effected my eyesight, I saw everything in rainbow colors. I was curious but sadly I'm not seeing rainbow colors, so I must not be having any side effects. And these must not be those eggs.

An inflatable building formerly housing NMR spectroscopy equipment used for biochemical research. The equipment, since moved to a permanent facility, uses technology related to that of MRI machines in medical centers, namely the use of an extremely powerful electromagnet, requiring a building that does not interfere with operation or present a hazard in the vicinity of a strong magnetic field (although this Sliderization suggests otherwise).

The building was deflated the day after I took this picture. It was in the corner of a large parking lot being demolished to make way for new buildings.

Here is an opinion on the Muskegon painting, written by Hopper biographer, Walter Wells.

"Hopper had a penchant for the feminine derriere. Various paintings and cartoons of Jo (his wife) are clearly posterior-centric.

In this painting, a waitress inclines her behind toward the center of the picture, both dinners seated behind the waitress lean perceptibly away from her, as does the potted tree behind them. The shadowy figure in the foreground, who is also downwind, seems hastily, by virtue of cropping, to be exiting the picture's frame. I would submit that Hopper may be mischievously suggesting-even maliciously, from Jo's standpoint- a great gust of object moving flatulence. the angles are right for it."

Hopper can have a sense of humor and that is what is happening here, I can't help but laugh out loud every time I see this great painting. I think he was very aware of what he was doing in all his paintings, despite what other critics say. I am beginning to feel he ranks quite high as a painter, maybe Americas best?

Jerusalem artichoke

Dug last week and they are part of Sunday dinner this evening.

I have been growing these for >20 years and quite like them. Very easy to grow and they persist in the same ground for years without any looking after. They are, however fiddly to clean and peel as they are smaller than anything I routinely peel!

They are unusual (among commonly eaten vegetable tubers) in that they store their carbs in the form of inulin (a polymer of fructose), famously relatively indigestible by humans and a source of flatulence. I have never found that they make me fart any more than I usually do!

Compared with the 1949/50 scene posted alongside, the Hull Daily Mail photographer was standing some hundred feet or so to the south, taking this Ferensway snapshot in around 1968/69. He is perhaps standing on an upper floor of the now-demolished Paragon House or else in the adjacent former Royal Station Hotel. My edited version zeroes in on the buses. The pedestrian crossing in the foreground leads to the Paragon Square war memorials. A KHCT Leyland PDR1 Atlantean is turning into Jameson Street. It is one of scores of Atlanteans delivered in this bland and angular style between 1960 and 1964, mainly for trolleybus replacement. A glimpse of the 1952-built Hammond’s department store can be seen beyond.

Presenting its derrière is an EYMS AEC Regent V of the VKH-registered batch delivered in 1956, its Willowbrook body featuring the Beverley Bar roof profile. It is almost at the end of its journey, and will shortly turn left into Hull’s famously draughty bus station.

The VKHs were great personal favourites. They were not things of beauty, but they had rich AEC souls. Their emitted the most remarkable sounds: a sweet plaintive noise from the AV470 engine at the front, rasping and snorting flatulence from the rear. I mourned their departure from the EYMS fleet in 1972, but 644 of the batch is a high-profile survivor.

Well, that was nice of them to wish me pleasant flatulence.

Educating myself in a subject that I've had on my mind for a while.

As an herb, lavender has been in documented use for over 2,500 years. In ancient times lavender was used for mummification and perfume by the Egyptians, Phoenicians, and peoples of Arabia.

Romans used lavender oils for bathing, cooking, and scenting the air, and they most likely gave it the Latin root from which we derive the modern name (either lavare--to wash, or livendula--livid or bluish). The flower's soothing "tonic" qualities, the insect-repellent effects of the strong scent, and the use of the dried plant in smoking mixtures also added to the value of the herb in ancient times..

Lavender is mentioned often in the Bible, not by the name lavender but rather by the name used at that time--spikenard (from the Greek name for lavender, naardus, after the Syrian city Naarda). In the gospel of Luke the writer reports: "Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the odor of the ointment."

Another ancient Christian reference to lavender involves how it got its scent. The plant is believed to have been taken from the Garden of Eden by Adam and Eve. However, the powerful perfume came later. According to legend, the clothing of baby Jesus bestowed the scent when Mother Mary laid them upon a bush to dry. This may explain why the plant is also regarded as a holy safeguard against evil. In many Christian houses, a cross of lavender was hung over the door for protection.

Perhaps first domesticated by the Arabians, lavender spread across Europe from Greece. Around 600 BC, lavender may have come from the Greek Hyeres Islands into France and is now common in France, Spain, Italy and England. The 'English' lavender varieties were not locally developed in England but rather introduced in the 1600s, right around the time the first lavender plants were making their way to the Americas. In Medieval and Renaissance Europe, the washing women were known as "lavenders" and they used lavender to scent drawers and dried the laundry on lavender bushes. Also during this time, lavender was grown in so-called "infirmarian's gardens" in monasteries, along with many other medicinal herbs. According to the German nun Hildegard of Bingen, who lived from 1098-1179, lavender "water,"--a decoction of vodka, gin, or brandy mixed with lavender--is great for migraine headaches.

Its holy reputation may have increased during the Great Plague in London in the 17th century, when it was suggested that a bunch of lavender fastened to each wrist would protect the wearer against the deadly disease. Furthermore, grave-robbers were known to wash in Four Thieves Vinegar, which contained lavender, after doing their dirty work; they rarely contracted the disease. In 16th-century France, lavender was also used to resist infection. For example, glove-makers, who were licensed to perfume their wares with lavender, escaped cholera at that time.

European royal history is also filled with stories of lavender use. Charles VI of France demanded lavender-filled pillows wherever he went. Queen Elizabeth I of England required lavender conserve at the royal table. She also wanted fresh lavender flowers available every day of the year, a daunting task for a gardener if you consider the climate of England. Louis XIV also loved lavender and bathed in water scented with it. Queen Victoria used a lavender deodorant, and both Elizabeth I and II used products from the famous lavender company, Yardley and Co. of London.

Lavender is a unique fragrance produced by the combination of 180 different constituents and is widely used in the perfume industry to add a top or middle note to commercial products. In the world of professional sniffers, it has a green, hay-like sweetness and gives "fruity aspects" to perfumes and other scented products. Lavender is widely grown in England for commercial use, and the Provence region of France is renowned as a world leader in growing and producing lavender.

In the United States and Canada, the Shakers were the first to grow lavender commercially. A strict sect of English Quakers who most likely had little use for lavender's amorous qualities (they were celibate), they developed herb farms upon their arrival from England. They produced their own herbs and medicines and sold them to the "outside world." Later a New York advertising firm picked them up and sold the simple products worldwide.

As an herbal medicine, lavender is widely utilized. For soothing, relaxing qualities few herbs can be claimed as effective. Constituents of the oils found in lavender can treat hyperactiviety; insomnia; flatulence; bacteria, fungus, and microbial activity on gums, airborne molds, and (in mixture with pine, thyme, mint, rosemary, clove, and cinnamon oils) Staphyloccus bacteria. Lavender may even be useful against impotence. In a study of men, the scent of pumpkin and lavender rated as the scent found most arousing.

Lavender and love are an ancient match. In an apocryphal book of the Bible, we again hear of the use of lavender. Here the story tells us that Judith anointed herself with perfumes including lavender before seducing Holofernes, the enemy commander. This allowed her to murder him and thus save the City of Jerusalem. The overwhelming power of this seductive scent was also used by Cleopatra to seduce Julius Cesaer and Mark Antony. The Queen of Sheba offered spikenard with frankincense and myrrh to King Solomon

By Tudor times, lavender brew was being sipped by maidens on St. Lukes day to divine the identity of their true loves. They'd chant, "St. Luke, St. Luke, be kind to me. In my dreams, let me my true love see." Lavender in the pillows of alpine girls brought hope of romance, while lavender under the bed of newlyweds ensured passion. Finally, a famous nursery rhyme called "Lavender Blue, Dilly Dilly" was written in 1680 and talks of "Whilst you and I, diddle, diddle…keep the bed warm." Lavender-inspired loving strikes again!

Capparis spinosa is a very common wild plant of Cretan flora. It is said to be native to the Mediterranean basin, but its range stretches from the Atlantic coasts of the Canary Islands and Morocco to the Black Sea to the Crimea and Armenia, and eastward to the Caspian Sea and into Iran. Known and used for millennia, capers were mentioned by Dioscorides as being a marketable product of the ancient Greeks. Capers are also mentioned by the Roman scholar, Pliny the Elder.

, plants grow spontaneously in cracks and crevices of rocks and stone walls. Plants grow well in nutrient poor sharply-drained gravelly soils. Mature plants develop large extensive root systems that penetrate deeply into the earth. Capers are salt-tolerant and flourish along shores within sea-spray zones.

Caper plants are small shrubs, and may reach about one meter upright. However, uncultivated caper plants are more often seen hanging, draped and sprawling as they scramble over soil and rocks. The caper's vegetative canopy covers soil surfaces which helps to conserve soil water reserves.

Capers make an important contribution to the pantheon of classic Mediterranean flavors that include: olives, rucola (argula, or garden rocket), anchovies and artichokes.

Tender young shoots including immature small leaves may also be eaten as a vegetable, or pickled. More rarely, mature and semi-mature fruits are eaten as a cooked vegetable. Additionally, ash from burned caper roots has been used as a source of salt.

Capers are said to reduce flatulence and to be anti-rheumatic in effect. In ayurvedeic medicine capers (Capers=Himsra) are recorded as hepatic stimulants and protectors, improving liver function. Capers have reported uses for arteriosclerosis, as diuretics, kidney disinfectants, vermifuges and tonics. Infusions and decoctions from caper root bark have been traditionally used for dropsy, anemia, arthritis and gout. Capers contain considerable amounts of the anti-oxidant bioflavinoid rutin.

hydrolyzed soy protein, maltodextrin, salt, artificial flavorings (including artificial smoke flavor), silicon dioxide (added less than 2% as an anti-caking agent).

▶ RECIPE

☞ I followed the recipe on the package but adding suggestions from Lord Byron's Vegetarian Beefless Stew. I spruced things up by using vegetable broth rather than water and by adding potatoes, frozen peas, Spanish paprika, fresh rosemary, vegan Worcestershire sauce, and diced portabello mushrooms to 'stand-in' for the beef. Really, it's like Stone Soup: it's what you add to the base.

☞ INGREDIENTS

20 oz package Hurst Beans "15 Bean Soup" package

8 cups low-sodium (or homemade) vegetable stock (or 8 cups water)

1 cup sweet onion, chopped

2 small Yukon potatoes, peeled and cubed

1 14.5 oz can diced tomatoes

2 TBSP lemon juice

4 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup frozen peas

1 tsp Marmite

1 tsp vegan Worcestershire Sauce

1 TBSP fresh rosemary, finely chopped

1 TBSP chili powder

1 TBSP dried oregano

1 TBSP dried basil

1 TBSP smoked Spanish paprika

Kosher salt and freshly-cracked black pepper, to taste

☞ PROCEDURE

1) Rinse the beans to remove any dirt or debris.

2) Place rinsed beans in a large pot, cover with 8 cups of water, and soak beans overnight for at least 8 hours.

3) After soaking, drain off the water and rinse the beans again. [This procedure removes some of the raffinose, the carbohydrate responsible for beany, uh, flatulence.]

4) Place beans in a large pot with 8 cups of vegetable stock (or water).

5) Bring beans to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer, covered, for 2 hours. Stir occasionally.

6) Add tomatoes, chili powder, Spanish paprika, Marmite, vegan Worcestershire sauce, and lemon juice. Simmer, covered, for another 30 minutes.

7) Five minutes before cooking is complete, add frozen peas and contents of Hurst's seasoning packet.

8) Simmer five more minutes, covered. Remove from heat.

9) While the soup is simmering, boil the cubed potatoes for 15-20 minutes. Drain. [I reserve the water and refrigerate for up to a week for use as a soup base.]

10) In a skillet, sauté the chopped onions for 3 minutes until soft. Add the chopped mushrooms. Continue to sauté until the mushrooms release their moisture and become brown, about 10 minutes. Add the diced garlic and continue cooking for 2 minutes.

9) Add the mushroom mixture and the cooked potato to the soup. Gently mix.

10) Scoop out two cups of the soup —vegetables and broth. Purée in a blender until smooth. Return the purée to the pot and stir into the soup. S/P to taste.

11) Serve! Whether it's soup or stew is up to you.

Phoebus finds friendly fräuleins fusing fragments of fragrant flowers with a flourish of foliage. The floral fulfilment feeds Phoebus' feelings fantastically. Phoebus foolishly feels the flowing fragrance hides his frequent and furious flatulence.

The Finnegan family is full of formidable foes. Phoebus finds it frustrating when his famous father, Franklin, flaunts his fabricated “flame-fuelled fluid filtration” findings for his feckless fawning fellows, fraudulently fetching funding.

Forfeiting financial favours, Phoebus forwards friends flawless formulas for functional fungicide fixing their flakey feet.

Fluffy hats, pink nail polish and copious amounts of eyeliner are considered feminine by some. I hope no one is offended by this pose which she did to me as a joke when I asked her to show her nails. I am told this is just a finger Mom, in Japan this means absolutely nothing. I'm glad she takes such a world view of things but was it true? What she said got me thinking. To express disapproval of a persons driving, raise your hand in the air, fingers up, and rotate your hand back and forth. To make a vulgar gesture, snap the fingers of both hands, or slap an open palm over a closed fist.

The Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus), also called sunroot, sunchoke, wild sunflower, topinambur, or earth apple, is a species of sunflower native to central North America. It is cultivated widely across the temperate zone for its tuber, which is used as a root vegetable.

Description

Helianthus tuberosus is a herbaceous perennial plant growing to 1.5–3 m (4 ft 11 in – 9 ft 10 in) tall with opposite leaves on the lower part of the stem but alternate towards the top. The leaves have a rough, hairy texture. Larger leaves on the lower stem are broad ovoid-acute and can be up to 30 cm (12 in) long. Leaves higher on the stem are smaller and narrower.

The flowers are yellow and produced in capitate flowerheads, which are 5–10 cm (2–4 in) in diameter, with 10–20 ray florets and 60 or more small disc florets. The flowers are briefly fragrant, giving off a light, vanilla-chocolate perfume.

The tubers are often elongated and uneven, typically 7.5–10 cm (3–3+7⁄8 in) long and 3–5 cm (1–2 in) thick, and vaguely resembling a ginger root in appearance, with a crisp and crunchy texture when raw. They vary in color from pale brown to white, red, or purple.

Food use

Before the arrival of Europeans, indigenous peoples cultivated H. tuberosus as a food source. The tubers persist for years after being planted, so the species expanded its range from central North America to the eastern and western regions.[citation needed] Early European colonists learned of this and sent tubers back to Europe, where they became a popular crop and naturalized there. It later gradually fell into obscurity in North America, but attempts to market it commercially were successful in the late 1900s and early 2000s.

The tuber contains about 2% protein, no oil, and little starch. It is rich in the carbohydrate inulin (8 to 13%), which is a polymer of the monosaccharide fructose. Tubers stored for any length of time convert their inulin into its component, fructose. Jerusalem artichokes have an underlying sweet taste because of the fructose, which is about one and a half times as sweet as sucrose.

It has also been reported as a folk remedy for diabetes: since inulin is not assimilated in the intestine, it doesn't cause a glycemic spike as potatoes would. Temperature variances have been shown to affect the amount of inulin the Jerusalem artichoke can produce. It makes less inulin in a colder region than when it is in a warmer region.

Etymology

Despite one of its names, the Jerusalem artichoke has no relationship to Jerusalem, and it is not a type of artichoke. though the two are distantly related as members of the daisy family. Italian settlers in the United States called the plant girasole, the Italian word for sunflower, because of its familial relationship to the garden sunflower (both plants are members of the genus Helianthus). Over time, the name girasole (pronounced closer to in southern Italian dialects) was corrupted by English-speakers to Jerusalem. An alternative explanation for the name is that the Puritans, when they came to the New World, named the plant with regard to the "New Jerusalem" they believed they were creating in the wilderness. Various other names have been applied to the plant, such as the French or Canada potato, topinambour, and lambchoke. Sunchoke, a name by which it is still known today, was invented in the 1960s by Frieda Caplan, a produce wholesaler trying to revive the plant's appeal.

The artichoke part of the Jerusalem artichoke's name comes from the taste of its edible tuber. Samuel de Champlain, the French explorer, sent the first samples of the plant to France, noting its taste was similar to that of an artichoke.

The name topinambur, in one account, dates from 1615, when a member of the Brazilian coastal tribe called the Tupinambá visited the Vatican at the same time that a sample of the tuber from Canada was on display there, presented as a critical food source that helped French Canadian settlers survive the winter. The New World connection resulted in the name topinambur being applied to the tuber, the word now used in French, German, Italian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, and Spanish.

History

Jerusalem artichokes were first cultivated by the Indigenous peoples of the Americas, though the exact native range of the species is unknown. Genome analysis has ruled out the common sunflower (also originating in the Americas) as an ancestor, and instead points to hybridization between the hairy sunflower and the sawtooth sunflower.

The French explorer Samuel de Champlain discovered that the native people of Nauset Harbor in Massachusetts had cultivated roots that tasted like artichoke. The following year, Champlain returned to the same area to discover that the roots had a flavor similar to chard and was responsible for bringing the plant back to France. Sometime later, Petrus Hondius, a Dutch botanist, planted a shriveled Jerusalem artichoke tuber in his garden at Terneuzen and was surprised to see the plant proliferate. Jerusalem artichokes are so well-suited for the European climate and soil that the plant multiplies quickly. By the mid-1600s, the Jerusalem artichoke had become a very common vegetable for human consumption in Europe and the Americas and was also used for livestock feed in Europe and colonial America. The French were particularly fond of the vegetable, which reached its peak popularity at the turn of the 19th century. The Jerusalem artichoke was titled 'best soup vegetable' in the 2002 Nice Festival for the Heritage of French Cuisine.

The French explorer and Acadia's first historian Marc Lescarbot described Jerusalem artichokes as being "as big as turnips or truffles," suitable for eating and taste "like chards, but more pleasant." In 1629, the English herbalist and botanist John Parkinson wrote that the widely grown Jerusalem artichoke had become very common and cheap in London, so much so "that even the most vulgar begin to despise them." In contrast, when they had first arrived in England, the tubers had been "dainties for the Queen."

Biological characteristics

Its rapid growth and its ability to reproduce from buried rhizomes and tubers facilitates the Jerusalem artichoke's uncontrolled spread.The vegetative propagules can be transported via rivers and water streams and begin a new population on riverbanks. Dispersal by animal is also possible, as animals feed on tubers and rhizomes and excrete the propagules in new areas. With humans' cultivation, there is also a risk of the plant's unintended escape into the wild. It can also be propagated by seed. Its relatively long flower period enables the Jerusalem artichoke to increase its reproductive potential.

Origins and distribution

Originated in North America the Jerusalem artichoke can now be found in several countries in North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. In Central Europe it is one of the most expanding invasive plant species. It can grow in many geo-climatic regions and different types of soils. However, Jerusalem artichoke prefers moist habitats and seems to be less tolerant of dry conditions.

Suppression of native plant species

Because of its ecological and biological attributes, the Jerusalem artichoke is highly competitive with other plant species. For instance, the carbohydrates in the tubers serve as an energy source for rapid growth in spring .The plant expands rapidly and creates shading, which has a suppressing effect on neighbouring plants. Therefore, the risk of outcompeting and repressing the growth of native plants is increased.

Cultivation and use

Unlike most tubers, but in common with many other members of the Asteraceae (including the artichoke), Jerusalem artichoke tubers store their carbohydrate as inulin (not to be confused with insulin) rather than as starch. This has made them an important source of inulin used as a dietary fiber in food manufacturing.

Jerusalem artichoke can propagate with seeds and tubers but the use of tubers leads to higher yields. For planting, the tubers are cut into pieces with three to five buds that are placed in 5–10 cm depth in the soil. Jerusalem artichoke has low nutrient requirements and needs less nitrogen than other energy crops. The competitiveness against weeds is high, making weed control easier but also making it harder to grow a different culture afterward, since usually small pieces of tubers remain in the ground after harvest. The plant's high competitiveness may be due to allelopathic effects, high plant size, and rapid growth rate.

Crop yields are high, typically 16–20 tonnes per hectare (7–9 short ton/acre) for tubers, and 18–28 tonnes per hectare (8–12 short ton/acre) green weight for foliage. Tubers remaining in the ground lie dormant over winter and can handle temperatures as low as −30 °C (−22 °F).[49] Jerusalem artichoke also has potential for production of ethanol fuel, using inulin-adapted strains of yeast for fermentation.

The tubers are used for cooking and baking in the same ways as potatoes, but unlike the potato, they can also be eaten raw. They have a similar consistency and, in their raw form, have a similar texture but a sweeter, nuttier flavor. When raw and sliced thinly, they are fit for a salad. Their inulin form of carbohydrates give the tubers a tendency to become soft and mushy if boiled, but they retain their texture better when steamed. The inulin cannot be broken down by the human digestive system but bacteria metabolize it in the colon. This can cause flatulence and, in some cases, gastric pain. John Gerard's Herbal, printed in 1621, quotes the English botanist John Goodyer on Jerusalem artichokes:

which way soever they be dressed and eaten, they stir and cause a filthy loathsome stinking wind within the body, thereby causing the belly to be pained and tormented, and are a meat more fit for swine than men.

Jerusalem artichokes have 650 mg potassium per 1 cup (150 g) serving. They are also high in iron and contain 10–12% of the USRDA of fiber, niacin, thiamine, phosphorus, and copper.

Use as forage

In former times, Jerusalem artichoke was used as forage for domesticated cattle, horses, and pigs. The plant has valuable nutrient contents and various bioactive compounds, and so is used today as an animal feed source or for the health of several animal species. Pigs, for example, can eat the tuber either dried or directly from the ground or the green plant biomass (stalks and leaves) from the pasture. Washed Jerusalem artichoke tubers can be fed to many animals, and silage produced from the harvested stalks and leaves. The silage has high nutrient values and satisfactory digestion performance for ruminants. Its high inulin content beneficially affects the rumen metabolism and microflora. However, cutting the tops to produce silage greatly reduces the harvest of the tubers. There are also many other Jerusalem artichoke products on the market, such as supplementary feed for horses, dogs, and small animals.

Fermented products

In Baden-Württemberg, Germany, over 90% of the Jerusalem artichoke crop is used to produce a spirit called Topinambur, the German word for Jerusalem artichoke. By the end of the 19th century, the tubers were being used in Baden to make a spirit called "Topinambur-Branntwein" (Jerusalem artichoke brandy), "Topinambur" (Jerusalem artichoke), "Topi","Erdäpfler","Rossler", or "Borbel". Topinambur produced in the European Union and Switzerland must be made exclusively from Jerusalem artichokes, contain at least 38% alcohol by volume, and contain neither added alcohol nor flavorings. Caramel color is the only permitted additive.

Jerusalem artichoke brandy smells fruity and has a slight nutty-sweet flavor. An intense, pleasant, earthy note characterizes it. The tubers are washed and dried in an oven before being fermented and distilled. It can be further refined to make "Red Rossler" by adding the roots of the common tormentil, giving it a bitter and astringent taste and a red color. Red Rossler contains other ingredients such as currants, producing a schnapps with about 50% alcohol used as digestif and as a remedy for diarrhea or abdominal pain.

US marketing scheme

In the 1980s, the Jerusalem artichoke also gained some notoriety when its seeds were planted by Midwestern US farmers at the prodding of an agricultural attempt to save the family farm. This effort aimed to teach independent farmers to raise their own food, feed, and fuel. Little market existed for the tuber in that part of the US then, but contacts were made with sugar producers, oil and gas companies, and the fresh food market for markets to be developed. Fructose had not yet been established as a mainstay, nor was ethanol used as a main fuel additive as it is today. The only real profit in this effort was realized by a few first-year growers (who sold some of their seed to other farmers individually as well as with the help of the company attempting this venture). As a result, many of the farmers who had planted large quantities of the crop lost money.

Diseases and pests

Stem rot disease is caused by the fungus Agroathelia rolfsii (aka Sclerotium rolfsii or Athelia rolfsii), which is one of the most important pathogens causing tuber and stem rot and up to 60% loss in Jerusalem artichoke yield.[66] Growing resistant varieties is an important method of controlling Agroathelia rolfsii.

Steve, Lee, Laura and I had a meal together about 2 weeks ago when they were visiting us.

We had just been to the “Grape and Olive” in the Meridian Tower in the Swansea Waterfront.

I had fruits de la mer, Lee had duck in a sublime sauce, I am not sure what Steve and Laura had but the cuisine is stunning.

As the headlights of a car hit the sign, it obliterated some of the letters. With a bit of imagination you may be able to make out what I read. After a meal like we had had “one act of flatulence would certainly not be enough - maybe 20 between the 4 of us …. but one ….. well that would be asking too much, My sense of humour on times is a bit base but it did make me chuckle
