You rarely see people in my sunset shots! Here, the guys

are 'in-awe' of the raw 'natural-power' of Mother Nature.

I thought it was a very nice moment. Thanks for looking.

A very rare day in this part of the world with the Southern Ocean being as flat as a fritter. From the film archive circa 1989.

Calm water at Lymington Harbour UK. The sea extremely flat and calm.

Everything came together for this shot. I needed high tide, no wind and a sunset. Last weekend I got them all. This is looking over to Inverness and the Kessock Bridge.

We suddenly saw this view from the car when we, after many hours of driving, were almost at our destination. I have always been amazed by flat calm mirror-like water surfaces and the symmetry they provide.

"Saturday In The Park" - Chicago

www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHPz-OcjH8s

Always a pleasure arriving very early morning to find a flat calm on the tarn and no other people about. Roll on Spring mornings

Title taken from the 1961 album by "The Gil Evans Orchestra".

That old croft ruin is next to the road from Orphir that climbs up the hill at Sorradale - heading west towards Stromness. None of that snow had been there the previous evening!

In the background there is quite dramatic snow cover on the Hoy Island hills. They are Orkney's two highest hills and are The Ward Hill (on the left) and Cuilags (on the right). The stretch of visible sea is a minute part of "Scapa Flow".

This lake (you can only see part of it in this shot) is one of the very first ... if not the first ... in western Newfoundland to become ice free in the spring. Every year. Without fail. The reason? Most likely because it is quite shallow.

Over on the right, near the middle of the shot, you can see where Bottom Brook ... a nice little salmon stream that dumps into Southwest Brook ... flows out of the lake. Very few people realize that the course of Bottom Brook has been changed ... not by nature ... but by man. It used to flow into Southwest Brook farther downstream and since the Trans Canada Highway passes along here (I'm actually standing on the shoulder of it to take this photo) two bridges would have had to have been built ... very close together ... one crossing Southwest Brook and one crossing Bottom Brook. So the course of Bottom Brook was changed so that it flows into Southwest farther upstream and then only one bridge had to be built. You used to be able to see the original rocks of the bottom of the stream if you cared to look ... but I'm not sure if you can anymore.

Oh, and don't be fooled by the lack of snow in this shot. It's just here. We still have lots of it around! In fact, we got dumped on again last week. Yes, again. Six to eight inches of wet, heavy snow. Here's an excellent article everyone should read ... especially anyone who thinks the earth's water levels, CO2, and temperatures are rising.

It was dead calm at Sandgate this morning.

Inspiration Cove, Esquimalt, Vancouver Island.

Looking at the Tasmanian South Coast from the to the west of Maatsuyker Island. Dutch navigator Abel Tasman, after whom the island takes its whitey name, would have had a similar view in November 1642.

Western Rocks in the right mid-ground. Mountains and ridges stretching off to the north. Federation Peak (1225m) in the center of the frame.

Some pre-frontal cloud over the island and from memory we pulled the gear in a whole gale of rain the following morning after dragging anchor and steaming around under the lee of Maatsuyker for most of the night.

I quite liked the initial pointillist look to the neg so very little post-work with this one from the film archives beyond; inverting the negative, mopping up dust and cropping out a lot of boring water (which was anything but boring 12 hours later...)

Nikon F3HP, Nikkor 35-70 f/3.5 AIS, probably around 1/250th sec at f/8 on Kodak Gold 400. ~70mm.

A fine morning November the 21st 2010 a beautiful calm Loch Leven near Glen Coe West Scotland, as we were driving towards Glen coe along the edge of the loch this gorgeous traditional built yacht caught my eye moored amid the amazing still water with this incredible light reflecting all around the view.

"Saturday In The Park" - Chicago

www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHPz-OcjH8s

Low tide exposes the rocks on the shore of Port Phillip Bay, just outside Altona.

Long exposure taken on a hazy day in April 2015. Its been on my bucket list of photographic images to take and now I can say that I have cracked it and very happy with the results, I just hope you like it too....

On Sunday I headed to Oxford Island with the intentions of getting some images of the Jetty. On arrival I was shocked to see that part of it is missing due to the Storms and Flooding that the area has had recently.

There was a slight breeze and the Lough was calm so I made the most of the day by capturing some images of the local landscape and wildlife.

OTTER in KELP

One of a pair of Otters who saw me before I saw them, both were sunning themselves on the rocks off Ardnamurchan point, in a very isolated spot.

My camera was still in the Rucksack, but with a hurried retrieval, I managed to get several shots of them swimming gracefully away.

The day was perfectly still, sunny and the sea calm. I was in heaven the Otters had been until I arrived but they moved away slowly hunting as they retreated.

At the Head of Loch Lomond just past Ardlui on the A82. I just stood and stared at the reflection, could hardly believe that it was water. The white cottage across the water is at Ardleish.

Not a breathe of wind.

Blue Rowing Boat anchored near Carsthorn (UK OS Ref.NX 994 597) at high tide on a flat calm sunny day July 2007

Yet another from Christmas day 2023. During summer, this scene is full of activity, like boats going to and from the archipelago, kids playing in the water or the neighbors relaxing in the outdoor hot tub. But now it's a bit more relaxed... ;-)

As seen along the Leeds Liverpool Canal at Jackson's Bridge Lydiate looking in the Liverpool direction.

The Kirkwall lifeboat there is in what is called "The Basin". Also in "The Basin|" is the "Kirkwall Bay" pilot-boat and moored alongside the main pier are two of the Ro-Ro ferries which link Kirkwall with Orkney's "North Isles".

A Poole commission for a Mr. Friel of Newtown shows a dredger on a river during a flat calm. If it is in Waterford, which we suspect it is, then this would have been at the top of the tide and close to the quays?

With confirmation (never really in doubt) that this is Waterford's quays, and with a relatively likely date range, the main unknowns here were the subject of the photo (the steam ship) and the person who commissioned the image. The latter, Mr William Friel, was apparently the engineer of the Waterford Harbour Commissioners. And, not only did he commission this image of the vessel, he effectively commissioned the ship itself. The SS Portlairge was seemingly commissioned in 1907, and built by the Dublin Dockyward Company - with supervision from Mr Friel. Operating in the port for more than 70 years, it was one of the longest serving stream dredgers anywhere on these islands. While there were apparently plans to use it as a museum ship, its hulk lies in the shallows "just around the corner" from the harbour in which it worked for so long - in Bannow Bay.
