Marc by Marc Jacobs mouse flats, sniffing something out in the garbage

Dutch Flat, established around 1851 as a California Gold Rush mining camp high on the Bear River, was named after German brothers Joseph and Charles Dorbach, who set up a general store and way station. Unlike most of the Gold Rush era towns in the state, Dutch Flat had never suffered a devastating fire that wiped out most of its downtown (though the First Chinatown burned down in Sept 10, 1887 and in 1898 several public buildings burned down, both suspected to be from arson). Consequently the small downtown seen here has several buildings dating from the early 1850s.

As the first large town to the West of Emigrant Gap, Dutch Flat became the site of surveying expeditions by Theodore Judah of the Central Pacific Railroad for the final Transcontinental route. Enthusiastically pushed by locals, the route East was mapped to indeed pass by the town. Many Californians vocally opposed the "Great Dutch Flat Swindle", thinking the route was impassible and that the rail lines would stop at the town and force travelers to cross over the Sierras by company stagecoaches, but the First Transcontinental Railroad indeed came by, the construction work making Dutch Flat one of the largest cities in the state in the 1860s, with a population of 6000, 3500 Chinese. However as the railroads went further East, Dutch Flat began to decline in importance.

Dutch Flat, California

Got a flat tire in Old Town Cottonwood yesterday. Actually, I'm not sure where I got it, but Old Town was where I noticed it, all "Ssssssssss" noisy and deflating. Ugly sight to see. And a big loud "Damn!"

The spare in the trunk tends to lose air, so it's generally flat too, and of no help at all. Chad came to my rescue with an air pump. He said, "You have three minutes worth of air. Go!" It was a white knuckle drive, but the tire held long enough for me to make it the two miles back home. This morning we pumped it up again to get it up to the Clarkdale Classic where hopefully my mechanic will have the tire repaired tomorrow.

Note: it was the valve stem. Broken and leaking. $5.00 fix.

For Eric's birthday this year, we decided to stay in a hotel overnight in Wendover. On our way then, we decided to stop off at the Bonneville Salt Flats where we played around for a bit before heading to our hotel.

Its nice that he just requires the little strip on the side to do his flattening and leaves me some room to do my thing.

Flats inspired by Audrey Hepburn (Salvatore Ferragamo) because I wanted an easy look since my day will be an endless series of meetings.

Red flats (Miu Miu) because I needed something to cheer me up. San Francisco.

Edward Street Flats are a social housing complex in Sheffield. Building started in the late 1930s and was completed after WWII.

There are 133 flats arranged in a "D" shape with a 4 storey high build on Edward Street and 3 storey high build on Solly Street side.

The flats are now a mix of Council, Housing Association and private ownership. Some flats are rented out by private landlords.

Adelina pallida. Rock Creek Park, Washington, DC, USA.

I think people should read this for themselves.

I found it a mix of insightful, interesting, frustrating, deceitful, inaccurate, poorly argued, arrogant, amusing and overall fairly irritating.

It's written by a Guardian journalist and it's basically a look at how particularly the UK media, but more generally the world's media has changed in terms of how it works since commercial owners started buying up media and er running them like businesses. This has led to less journalists, more reliance on news wires and PR agencies and so on.

The tone is alarmist, there are no thoughts about solutions to the problems, no discussion that media are businesses, an assumption that his ideas are right and a lot of slipshod argument and poor fact checking.

Perhaps the best example of poor argument/fact checking being the point that the Tories under Thatcher really brought spin into uk politics and just threw money at PR agencies. For instance spending millions on Saatchi & Saatchi. Er...last time I looked - when Thatcher was in power S&S were an ad agency not a PR agency.

Now is the above a simple small mistake or a something a little more serious in that it completely undermines his point if S&S is not a PR agency. The error itself (one of numerous) is also an irritant as he talks continuously about how journalists are under so much pressure on dalies that they don't have time to fact check properly. One would assume you would have time when you are writing a book though?

The other main annoyance, and the killer for me, is the slating he gives all the other papers (which he didnt write much for), while the Guardian remains pretty much unscathed. So is the Guardian the only newspaper/media outlet escaping this crushing commercial attack on every media outlet around the globe (even the BBC)? Or is it more a case of when you decide to write a book ripping into your industry - you need to leave one company alone so you can still earn a living...

Read it and see what you think.

Here is my version of the flat demolition, it did take a while after 11am for them to come down and I had to stop and start recording again so this is the last video I have when they do come down.

The birds kept going back in after the warning alarm. I'm not sure if that had anything to do with it but when it did happen as you can see in this video, I wasn't ready for it at all. It was very emotional and quite sad to see them come down like that, I know they are an eyesore but it was just all the waiting and then that's it.

There was a gust of wind just before they came down and my battery of my phone which was charged all night went right down to critically low which made me think there might have been some paranormal activity.

Also the way the wind was swept the other way as you cant really see on this video but other video's on YouTube was a bit weird.

Anyway thought i'd add a comment to this as it was the very first time i've ever experienced this in person. It is definately a different experience being there than watching it online even watching this back it seems different to how I saw it in person.

at about 7am, as i was starting to ride back to vancouver, i got a flat tire. i took the opportunity to have some breakfast, then patched the tube and continued on.

Went for an awesome ride today after dropping off the kids at school and had a 2hr+ window. On the last downhill section I suddenly noticed that something wasn't right with the tire. Sure enough I had a flat. Had to hike out and carry the bike out the last 2km. Wouldn't have made it to pick up Maya so I called a friend if she could grab Maya and I raced to go get Lucy from her school.
