Flappy Bird is a 2013 mobile game, developed by Vietnam-based developer Dong Nguyen and published by .GEARS Studios, a small, independent game developer also based in Vietnam. The game has a side-scrolling format and the player controls a bird, attempting to fly between rows of green pipes without coming into contact with them. The developer created the game over several days, using a bird protagonist which he had designed for a cancelled game in 2012. The game was released on May 24, 2013 but received a sudden rise in popularity in early 2014. It was criticized for its level of difficulty and alleged plagiarism in graphics and game mechanics, while other reviewers found it addictive. At the end of January 2014, it was the most downloaded free game in the iOS App Store. During this period, its developer claimed that Flappy Bird was earning $50,000 a day from in-app advertisements.
Invader created a big version of Flappy Bird and installed it on a wall in the 8ème arrondissement.

No indication whether this is an insult or not, or whether the 'bloke' in question is 'a bloke' or 'all blokes'.

Flappy was sitting on the wood pile pondering the soggy day. I think my appearance with a camera rather interrupted his thoughts which might explain the look he is giving me.

Flapper is feeling okay this morning. He looks much brighter and perkier than last night.
I brought him out of his playpen for a shot and a pill, and he ran for the door to go outside. So he's got some energy back.
He's not eating much yet, but did have a few peas, lettuces and of course, french fries. When his appetite is really back, he'll eat his duck food. So hopefully he eats that by the end of today.
Thanks for all the good thoughts and well-wishes everyone.

roxy is very fast for a great dane, but uh, a fast shutter isn't always kind to dogs who were born with big gums. this isn't even a bad one. i've taken shots where i can barely figure out where her eye socket went because of all that surplus face material slapping around.

"What's the hardest thing about game design?"
"Making things work. In almost all cases, the concepts and design you come up with don't work in reality, and you spend the rest of the time trying to work out why...that and crying into your computer.”
It’s been a tiring day, doing some holiday shopping in York. I saw some interesting characters there but sadly this is not Humans of York :) On the way I made a stop off in Leeds and came across Robin here. It was a brilliantly sunny start to the day and she was dressed to embrace it.
Robin told me she had studied game design and we talked for a while about video games in general, the phenomenon that is flappy bird, and about what she was doing now. She is currently just ‘milling around’ (her words), not having much direction, but taking the opportunity to see what comes up.
It was interesting to talk to her about game design, as I work in software design, so there was much overlap. I’ve never cried into my computer however, though I’ve seldom swore at it.
