Pink Flamingos in San Diego

These Andean Flamingoes are such photogenic birds. I still have a number of photos to post from a trip to WWT Slimbridge this week, but will intersperse them with shots of other birds taken there.

FLICKR EXPLORE - April 4, 2012 (Thanks everyone)

I had an opportunity last week to visit the renowned San Diego Zoo in California. I lugged two cameras across half a continent to get there with the hope of capturing some interesting subjects. Here is the first of them, a pink flamingo.

A beautiful flamingo taken at Pensthorpe Nature Reserve, Fakenham. We had a wonderful day there with out good friends Judy and Mervyn.

Pensthorpe Natural Park is located in Pensthorpe, Norfolk, England and is approximately one mile from Fakenham and close to the A1067 road. The park covers 700 acres (280 ha). The River Wensum, which runs through the site, is a designated Special Area of Conservation (SAC).

Pensthorpe Conservation Trust (PCT) was formed in January 2003. It is a charitable trust that works closely with Pensthorpe Natural Park to showcase the importance of species and habitat conservation. The PCT works with partner organisations in national conservation programmes to conserve wetland and farmland bird species. These partnerships include Operation Turtle Dove, The Great Crane Project and re-introduction projects for red squirrels and corncrakes.

Flamingos are one of the most interesting types of animals in the world. There are six known species of them out there. They are different from many other types of birds because of the length of their legs. They aren’t often seen flying but they certainly can just like other birds. It was long debated though if they should be classified as storks or ducks. Finally, it was decided that they should have their own classification.

The coloring for a Flamingo ranges from various shapes of pink all the way to a crimson red. Some of them are shades of orange too. They also have colors of cream and white mixed in. They are lovely creatures and they seem to be very calm. If you have a local zoo then chances are you have been able to see and to observe these animals up close.

Flamingos live in tropical and subtropical parts of the world, such as parts of South America, Africa and Europe. Their habit of standing on one leg is thought to help maintain body temperature. Surprisingly adaptable, they are not only able to live in hot volcanic lakes, but in icy ones high up in the Andes.

There are six species, two of which are considered near threatened and one other vulnerable. While there are 5 million in the wild, worldwide there are thought to be fewer than 30 nesting sites. Apart from human interference and habitat loss, they also have to contend with predation from jackals and eagles.

Their diet consists mainly of brine shrimp and blue-green algae, which they filter from mud and silt, by means of upturned beaks. It is this food, together with bacteria in the water, which gives them their pink colouration.

The word "flamingo" comes from the Spanish and Latin word "flamenco" which means fire, and refers to the bright color of the birds' feathers.
