I've been awaiting the opportunity to photograph a flamingo so that I could add this lovely "flamingo road" texture by Temari 09. So....here it is :-) The texture can be found here: www.flickr.com/photos/34053291@N05/14871212917/
It was raining and even through the texture the raindrops and damp feathers are visible. The bright colours on this flamingo are a result of diet.

The 'flamingo mingle' is a new encounter where folks can feed the flamingo. While this is taking place at the children's zoo where the Chilean flamingos are, there is a small squad of American flamingos that get brought over for the mingle (as the Chilean ones prefer to keep their distance).
Guests are given a cup with several feeding pellets in it. The cup is then filled with water and folks can witness the filter feeding process of the flamingo up close. Following the feeding guests are given a clean cup to take home as a souvenir.

A lesser flamingo form the Oregon Zoo, their newest exhibit. These exotic birds have an eye that must be seen in person, it looks like a vibrant slice of an orange. I hope to get back yet this spring to shoot them in some better light. Thanks for looking, and have a great week!

I care for this song today: Yesterday ♪
Flamingo Watching
by Kay Ryan
Wherever the flamingo goes,
she brings a city’s worth
of furbelows. She seems
unnatural by nature—
too vivid and peculiar
a structure to be pretty,
and flexible to the point
of oddity. Perched on
those legs, anything she does
seems like an act. Descending
on her egg or draping her head
along her back, she’s
too exact and sinuous
to convince an audience
she’s serious. The natural elect,
they think, would be less pink,
less able to relax their necks,
less flamboyant in general.
They privately expect that it’s some
poorly jointed bland grey animal
with mitts for hands
whom God protects.
