Fixies are popular in Toronto these days and this is a stylish example. Somewhat minimalist in design, the pedals are directly coupled to the rear axle via a drivetrain which has no freewheel and they usually have just one gear. This simple design has an almost cultish following. You can see that this one has a single brake and it's on the front wheel. Braking with this design would have to be done with great care because sudden application of brakes to the front wheel can easily turn the bike into a catapult (and turn the rider into road kill).

"Fixie Folly" 2011
In Budapest on a visit to see a friend, Jon, who lives there. In fact this is only a few hundred metres from his flat in Pest. I'd gone out without my camera but by instinct I had my phone in my hand when I crossed a busy main road and suddenly glimpsed a cyclist heading towards me fairly fast. I held the phone up and panned ( tracked ) her as she came level and then went whizzing past. My only memory of what I saw was .. red hair ! She was risking it in several ways .. a fixed gear bike / only one hand on the bars ( and in reverse position ! ) / big stilleto heels / and on a call. But she looks like she knows what she's doing and she's got her hand on the brake lever. Very lucky shot to have got this pic

A Budapest lors d'une visite à un ami, Jon, qui y habite. En fait, c'est seulement à quelques centaines de mètres de son appartement dans Pest . J'étais sorti sans mon appareil photo mais, par instinct, j'avais mon téléphone à la main lorsque j'ai traversé une route et que j'ai soudain aperçu un cycliste qui se dirigeait vers moi à vive allure. J'ai levé mon téléphone et j'ai fait un panoramique (suivi) de la cycliste alors qu'elle arrivait. Mon seul souvenir de ce que j'ai vu est... des cheveux roux ! Elle prenait plusieurs risques : un vélo à pignon fixe, une seule main sur le guidon (et en position inversée !), de gros talons aiguilles, un appel téléphonique, mais elle a l'air de savoir ce qu'elle fait et elle a la main sur le levier de frein. Très chanceux d'avoir obtenu cette photo
