The Library of Birmingham which was designed by Buro Happold and built at a cost of £188 million. In Centenary Square, Birmingham, West Midlands.
Birmingham City Council looked into relocating the library for many years. The original plan was to build a new library in the emerging Eastside district, which had been opened up to the city centre following the demolition of Masshouse Circus. A library was designed by Richard Rogers on a site in the area. However, for financial reasons and reservations about the location this plan was shelved. The Council suggested that the Library be split between a new building built between the Rep Theatre and Baskerville House at Centenary Square, which until 2009 was a public car park (to house the main lending library) and a building at Millennium Point in "Eastside" (to house the archives and special collections).
In August 2006, the Council confirmed the area between the Rep Theatre and Baskerville House as the future site for the library. Capita Symonds had been appointed as Project Managers for the Library of Birmingham. The council's intention was to create a "world class" landmark civic building in Centenary Square. Not long after this, the two-sites idea was scrapped and the archives and special collections will move to the site at Centenary Square.
Preparation of the ground for building, and archaeological work between Baskerville House and The Rep had begun before planning permission had been granted. Planning permission was finally granted and approved by Birmingham City Council in December 2009. Building work, which was undertaken by Carillion, commenced in January 2010, with a completion schedule for 3 September 2013. A topping out ceremony to mark the completion of the highest part of the building took place on 14 September 2011.
At the 2014 RIBA West Midlands Awards, the Library of Birmingham was named overall West Midlands building of the year Mecanoo architect Patrick Arends won emerging architect of the year and Birmingham City Council won client of the year. In the June 2014 birthday honours, the library's director, Brian Gambles, was made MBE "for services to libraries". On 17 July 2014 the Library of Birmingham was nominated as one of the six short-listed buildings for the 2014 Stirling Prize, awarded for excellence in architecture.
The library has a number of nationally and internationally significant collections, including the Boulton and Watt archives, the Bournville Village Trust Archive, the Charles Parker Archive, the Parker collection of children's books, the Sir Benjamin Stone photographic collection, the Wingate Bett transport ticket collection, the Warwickshire photographic survey, the British Institute of Organ Studies archive and the Railway and Canal Historical Society Library.
The specialist Shakespeare Memorial Room was designed in 1882 by John Henry Chamberlain for the first Central Library. When the old building was demolished in 1974 Chamberlain's room was dismantled and later fitted into the new concrete shell of the new library complex. When the Library of Birmingham was built, it was again moved, to the top floor. It houses Britain’s most important Shakespeare collection, and one of the two most important Shakespeare collections in the world; the other being held by the Folger Shakespeare Library. The collection contains 43,000 books including rare items such as a copy of the First Folio 1623; copies of the four earliest Folio editions; over 70 editions of separate plays printed before 1709 including three "Pavier" quartos published in 1619 but falsely dated. There are significant collections from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, a near complete collection of Collected Works, significant numbers of adaptations, anthologies and individual editions.
The Boulton and Watt Collection is the archive of the steam engine partnership of Matthew Boulton and James Watt, dating from its formation in 1774 until the firm's closure in the 1890s. The archive comprises about 550 volumes of letters, books, order books and account books, approximately 29,000 engine drawings and upwards of 20,000 letters received from customers. Boulton and Watt manufactured the screw engines for Brunel's SS Great Eastern and the archive includes a portfolio of 13 albumen prints by Robert Howlett documenting the construction of the Great Eastern, including a rare variant of the Brunel portrait of 1857.

Interior shot of Go North East's unallocated Wright Streetlite DF/Wright Streetlite Max Micro-Hybrid 5392 (NK15 EMX), which carries a midnight blue base livery, is pictured here in the yard at Saltmeadows Road Depot, Gateshead, following delivery to the company prior to entering service. 17/03/15
Delivered in March 2015, this vehicle was one of a batch of 29 Wright Streetlites ordered by the company as part of its 2014/15 financial year.
It is the Micro-Hybrid version of the Wright Streetlite, which is 11.5m in length. The Micro Hybrid recovers energy lost from braking to power the vehicle electrics and compressed air systems, saving up to 10% in fuel costs.
Representing an investment of approximately £650,000; this vehicle was one of four purchased to upgrade service X66 (Gateshead - Metrocentre). It features full white LED destination displays and e-leather seating. Unlike 5395 - 5419, this vehicle was not fitted with free Wi-Fi, Next Stop Announcements or power sockets, due to the nature of the route for which 5391 - 5394 are allocated to.

This Space Shuttle tile was fitted for the first flight of Columbia in early 1981 (STS-1). In the many months prior to first flight, the novel heat tiles were inspected and several were replaced. This one was scrapped and given to NASA Senior engineer Charlie Mars for his work on the Shuttle Program. Below the Shuttle Tile ID number, they added "IN APPRECIATION OF YOUR SUPPORT OF STS-1".
Felt vibration isolation insulation material is on the back (see blow). This ITAR controlled technology was sold in the American Space Museum charity auction.
Today is the 40th anniversary of the first shuttle flight, which NASA described as "the boldest test flight in history." It was the only time humans piloted the first flight of a new launch vehicle. It was the first time Americans launched with solid-fuel rockets. It was the first flight with no abort capability during the full burn of the solid rockets. Astronauts Young and Crippen helped design the spacecraft controls, including 2,214 switches and displays in the cockpit — about three times as many on the Apollo command module.
31207 was built by Brush at the Falcon works, Loughborough as D5631, entering taraffic in July 1960 allocated to Stratford. It was originally fitted with a Mirrlees 12 cylinder power unit. However after a couple of years in service this engine started to develop major problems and it was decided to re-engined all 262 locomotives with an 1470bhp English Electric 12SVT engine between 1964-69. The whole class had steam heating boilers fitted and had the Blue Star Electro-Pneumatic multiple-working controls as found on many other BR classes which made them very useful locomotives. They could be found on a variety of secondary and relief passenger duties as well as parcels and freight traffic. Whilst originally the class was allocated to the Eastern Region, they eventually became common on the Western and London Midland Regions as well. 31207 is seen here in the yard at Loughborough on the 7th September 1976 which at that time was a loading point for ballast delivered by road from local quarries. It had a long operational life as it was not withdrawn until February 2001 (after 41 years service), being one of the last three class 31’s operated by EWS. Subsequently bought for preservation in 2004 it can currently (December 2009) operational and can be found on the North Norfolk Railway.

Retirement age: still active at time of upload (jul. 2018)
Photo location: Motorway 501 (Aarhus Syd Motorvejen), Viby J, Aarhus, DK
This Volvo has been spotted several times in two different configurations - with or without a bullbar with 4 extra lights fitted.
I'm uploading two photos, one of each configuration, taken just a few days apart.
Going down the steep hill leading northeast into Aarhus. The motorway ends by Åhavevej in Viby. From here, the trucks can continue straight on to Marselis Boulevard across Skanderborgvej before ending at the port of Aarhus, 6 km from here.
Tip: to locate trucks of particular interest to you, check my collections page, "truck collection" - here you will find all trucks organized in albums, by haulier (with zip-codes), year, brand and country.
Retirement age for trucks: many used trucks are offered for sale on international markets. If sold to a foreign buyer, this will not be listed in the danish motor registry, so a "retired" truck may or may not have been exported. In other words, the "retirement age" only shows the age, at which the truck stopped running on danish license plates.

Snapped this shot while a friend of mine was shooting it for a Fatlace feature, which is now up.
I've never been a fan of Evo's, I've always been an STi type of guy, but this car has totally changed my perspective on them. Low, wide, and aggressive just the way I like it.
Not so long ago this might have been a Western working but it's Febuary 1977 and they have all but gone, here is snowplough fitted Class 31 31258 running round the stock from the 06:45 from London Paddington, a Class 52 turn for the last few year's , single 31's then pair's were used for a while then Class 47 's took over followed by Class 50's, but like all the loco's in my upload's they are long gone, even the service from Birmingham to London Padington is just a memory. I don't think privatisation of our rail system has done rail services any favour's. K C. New Street 19/02/1977.

A bit of a “one off” in my collection is this photograph of one of the nameplates fitted to 45006 Honourable Artillery Company taken on the 2nd May 1981 at Birmingham New Street. 45006 was originally D89 which entered service in March 1961 however it would over four years later on the 9th June 1965 when it received its name at a ceremony at Broad Street station, London. The Honourable Artillery Company was established by Royal Charter by Henry VIII in 1537 and was originally known as the Gentlemen of the Artillery Garden. During the English Civil War (1642 - 1649) members of the Company fought on both sides, Royalist and Parliamentary. The Honourable Artillery Company was first used in 1685 and later confirmed by Queen Victoria. Over the years members of the regiment have fought as infantry, cavalry and artillery including the Boer War, the First World War and the Second World War. During the First World War battalions serving in France, Flanders, Italy, Aden, Egypt and Palestine and ten percent were killed in action, died from their wounds or from sickness. During the Second World War the Company served in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany. Currently the Regiment is part of the Army Reserve (Territorial Army). 45006 was withdrawn in September 1986.
