Children start the first day of school on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013 at Washington Writers Academy.

I've always love bullseye tabbies, and when we found this one, I was thrilled to see a deep orange bullseye that looked almost like wood grain. We have a love of Japanese things in this family, so we looked up the Japanese word for wood grain: mokume. Well, since at the time our daughters' favorite movie was My Neighbor Totoro, we named the new kitten Mei after Satsuki's little sister. (She didn't have enough feet to be Nekobasu.)
