Coming straight from the preserved Mainline decker, here’s the modern day incarnation of the name, used for the corridor between Doncaster and Sheffield. After being thwarted about half a dozen times by buses in other liveries showing up on the X3, the final arrival I was able to see before catching the train home provided me with what I’d been waiting for all day.
Like Sheffield’s blue and Doncaster’s red it follows the same ‘South Yorkshire Urban’ pattern with the positions of colour blocks and stripes, but in this striking yellow with two shades of red, and a bunch of diagonal lines. In the last upload I said I liked Doncaster red more than Sheffield blue, but actually I’d have to say THIS is my favourite First South Yorkshire livery. In 2021 I briefly caught one of these Mainline Gemini 2s on video and since then I’ve been itching to get a proper photo of one.
The two things that seemed a shame were the lack of Mainline branded buses on the Mainline routes, and that all the X3s I saw were mainly carrying fresh air. Maybe the main stop for Sheffield is not the interchange so it gets busier as it goes out of the city, but since they went to the trouble of providing branded buses with high backed seats operating under a recognisable name it’s disappointing that they then went and stuck regular buses on the route instead. You know it’s meant to be some kind of premier service when one of the upper deck seating rows has been turned to face backwards!
36276 is pictured turning from Pond Street into Sheffield Interchange on 31.5.24. Its main fleet numbers are positioned on the glass and I think these ran in base red/yellow without branding initially, which might have something to do with it. I’m pleased to have finally got a photo of this livery after several years, and am not looking forward to the 2024 purple/grey livery wiping it out.

The First Presbyterian Church is located on the pedestrian mall in Old Town Winchester, Virginia. The church sanctuary was built in 1841, following the use of several locations from 1788 on, including the nearby Old Stone Church. I have an earlier shot of this church on my photostream, taken from the opposite direction. Information from the church website.
