Whether it’s fighting fires, responding to traffic accidents, or assisting with rescue operations – we are always there to help. It’s more than just a hobby: it’s a meaningful task where you can make a difference for the community with a strong team.

These small town firefighters take squirt guns to a new level. One guy actually gut hurt when his helmet was ripped off by the blast of water. Fun on the 4th of July in Silverton, Colorado.

Built this last year but just didn’t have a way to photograph it due to its size. The top part flies away as a glider-like craft while the bottom works as a Fire Fighting platform and rescue-raft deployment zone.

A large grass fire broke out about 4km from us and quickly got out of control.

By late in the day, 9 planes and 39 units were fighting the blaze. The firefighting airplanes have an airstrip a few km away from us - they were flying past all afternoon and into the evening. Eventually the fire was brought under control, with no loss of life.

My nephew Jason piloting the CH47D Chinook firefighting helicopter 'Big Linda' (N947CH) on Thanksgiving Day (2015). I was at Long Beach Airport, meeting them after their flight from Sacramento.

Early next morning they flew to the nearby Port in Los Angeles, where the Chinook (along with a Skycrane firefighting helicopter) was loaded onto a cargo ship by a huge crane. It will arrive in Melbourne, Australia one month later, in time for use during their fire season... which can be devastating, especially in expectation of El Nino.

This helicopter was very busy fighting fire here in California during our loooong fire season. It carries a "bambi bucket", 2,000 gallons of water at the end of a long cable slung below the aircraft (see photo below); it's able to make pinpoint drops, or drop along a long line of fire.

I wasn't able to fly in 'Big Linda' this time, but fingers-crossed for later!

Veterans crews provide career opportunities in fire and a pathway to other careers in land management agencies.

The skills, training, and knowledge veterans acquire while serving in the military are directly applicable to many jobs within the BLM. Veterans possess the necessary skills for wildland firefighting, such as communication, teamwork, decisive leadership, risk mitigation and management, logistical abilities, and emergency medicine.

Firefighters can fight fire with fire using drip torches. Drip torches consists of a canister for holding fuel (pictured) and a spout to expel the fuel. The spout contains a wick that is lit and used to direct where the firefighter is placing the flaming fuel on the ground. Drip torches contain a mixture of gas and diesel and is a critical tool in wildland firefighting and prescribed burn operations.
