The fire department in Newberg burned down an abandoned house for practice and I just happened to see the smoke and had my camera.

One of the clues of a recent geocache brought us to this monument, the State of Connecticut Firefighter's Memorial.

A tribute to the memory of those firefighters who have given their lives in the line of duty.

The National Firefighters Memorial is a memorial composed of three bronze statues depicting firefighters in action at the height of the Blitz. It is located on the Jubilee Walkway to the south of St Paul's Cathedral in the City of London, and it is approachable from the south bank of the River Thames via the Millennium Footbridge.

The monument, originally the concept of Cyril Demarne, was commissioned by the Firefighters Memorial Charitable Trust set up in 1990. It was sculpted by John W. Mills. Initially, the structure was intended as a tribute to those men and women who fought so gallantly against fire on the streets of London during the Blitz of World War II, when the city was struck by bombs on 57 consecutive nights in a sustained campaign of bombing. It also served as a monument to commemorate the service of firefighters throughout the war. Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother unveiled the memorial on 4 May 1991.

It was decided in 1998 to make the memorial a national monument that would commemorate not just the firefighters who died in World War II, but the lives of all firefighters throughout the United Kingdom who were killed in the line of duty. The National Firefighters Memorial was moved from its original site in Old Change Court, the plinth was elevated by a little over 1 m, and the names of all those killed in peacetime were added.

The Princess Royal, patron of the Firefighters' Memorial Charitable Trust, attended a service and ceremony of re-dedication on 16 September 2003. A total of 1,192 names were inscribed in bronze onto the memorial.

A service of remembrance is held at the memorial annually on the Sunday closest to 7 September, the anniversary of the start of the Blitz.

Firefighters work as a part of highly skilled and motivated teams that respond to emergencies on RAF bases and family living quarters.

Firefighters also perform an essential role on overseas operations. As part of Immediate Response Teams, they are equipped with highly specialist equipment, like night vision goggles and powerful cutting tools.

This was one of the firefighters working on the car file at the neighbor's house. It was quite a surprise to see them cutting through our yard (which is not in view here) to get over to the neighbor's house!

The goals of success and positive action are made that much easier when we work alongside those who want the same end result. Our strongest number will always be anything greater than one.

In this shot i've tried to recreate McNally idea of point lighting, when you light different parts of scene with different lights, with natural looking style.

1. Two SB-26 with blue gels behind the fire truck for pavement.

2. SB-80DX with pale yellow inside the truck for parts and accessories.

3. SB-800 into Westcott stripbox for the firefighter as fill.

4. SB-800 with snoot for firefighter as key.

5. SB-800 with green-yellow gel and snoot at the left side of firetruck.

6. SB-800 with blue gel to front seat of firetruck.

The helmet of one of my crew after a hot one!

Shot with Elinchrom Quadra(s). I used 2 of them making possible to fire 4 heads.

Here, there is a Portalite Softbox which is a square softbox set at f10 on a C-Stand at the top of a miniboom. The helmet covers his face so I need a fill otherwise you could not see his face and his eyes at all. I tried to bounce a light against a golden reflector lying on the ground to get light back from below. It worked... too well actually. Not only his face was getting light but the entire scene. Not what I was going for. I needed more control, just a light on his face to light it up. So I decided to put a snoot aiming at his face. As you see, I should have aimed a little higher. But, well, it's OK. This my lesson, the thing I will take with me for the next similare shoot : People with hats or caps. A third fill is there - very decent - for the lower part of Didi's uniform : a ring Flash set on the ground aiming toward his chest at f2,8. I did not pay attention what the f stop was for the snoot, it has been a try - fail -try - fail and so on.

It's good to take a lot of frames since pixels are free, but while setting the light, the way to go is to shoot - scan the picure on the LCD - adjust - shoot...

I really admire what firefighters do to save our lives, they train hard, and when no one else would be able save you : fire, car accident,... They are here. They don't even get paid. They do all the trainings during their free time.

My pictures of them is a way to say : THANK YOU !

Shot with my trusty Nikon D700, with my 24 to 70mm at f10.
