The firebug is resistant to frost, maybe that is the reason why it is the first insect I noticed in the spring? Or is it the red color?
Firebugs, Pyrrhocoris apterus, swarming on a stump in the garden of Palazzo Arese Borromeo in mid-May.
A female firebug (Pyrrhocoridae) just caught a Pleasing fungus beetle (Family: Erotylidae).
Here a photo of the fungus beetle before becoming a prey:

I was wandering around Celle with the kids I am teaching photography to on an activity week, when I spotted these little bug things walking around on some leaves. On closer expression I was surprised to see that they all had these outrageous areas coloured like face masks on their backs.
Any ideas as to what they are?
Thanks westpark, for identifying them as Pyrrhocoris apterus / firebug

These arrived in the mail today. Thanks to Jeff Zeller, Tara Shahian and John Slater for helping me with these. I plan on sending out a bunch to community members and contributors but will probably have a few left over, so if you're interested in one, send me a note.
Now I can say, that using lighter will be even easier to use than a battery.
