The current 2010 Duveen Commission, by Fiona Banner.

The suspended Sea Harrier transforms machine into captive bird, the markings tattooing its surface evoking its namesake the Harrier Hawk. A Jaguar lies belly up on the floor, its posture suggestive of a submissive animal. Stripped and polished, its surface functions as a shifting mirror, exposing the audience to its own reactions. Harrier and Jaguar remain ambiguous objects implying both captured beast and fallen trophy.

[From the Tate website]

Both planes are de-commissioned fighter planes.

The Jaguar has been polished, the Harrier painted with feathers.

Jaguar

This particular plane is Sepecat Jaguar XZ118.

First flight in 1976, decommissioned in 2006.

The SEPECAT Jaguar is an Anglo-French jet ground attack aircraft, used by the RAF until 2007.

Its unmistakable, even in the thick haze -- those are F-16s on the tarmac, with their sidewinders(heat seeking missiles) still on. The F-16 is one of the most successful fighter planes in the world. It is used in many countries, and had good service records. It is a multi-role fighter, that can also be used for attack missions. This aircraft is manufactured by General Dynamics, and the US military have called it the Falcon.

The plane that I was most excited to see fly at the airshow this year! A restored Mikoyan Mig-17 Fresco flying during the 2025 Abbotsford International Airshow. It was unique to see this Cold War era jet. The Mig-17 was actually the most feared fighter plane for a time. No NATO fighters were able to beat it until the F4 Phantom II entered service in the 1960s. It was still cool to see and just as intimidating as it was back in it's prime.

This is a VF-1C. The "C" Designation is my own. I hand painted a VF-1A to make this new "stealth" version :p. Came out pretty cool in my opinion!

A macabre image of an American Marine standing amid several Japanese corpses (I count at least eight). A souvenir hunter, he seems to have found himself one of the coveted Japanese katana swords. There are two Japanese machine guns (Type 92 heavy machine guns or "Woodpeckers") in the foreground and background. The fighter plane and oil drum in the background lead me to believe this is a Japanese airstrip taken by the Americans. I have no other info regarding the time or location of this image. Please let me know if you know any further details about this.

The RCAF CF-18 Hornet demo during the 2023 Abbotsford Airshow. The Cf-18s are now due to be replaced by the new CF-35 Lightnings by 2027 making this years airshow one of the last few times that they'll be at Abbotsford. It'll be sad to see them go when they're finally retired.

A bbmf Spitfire and an RAF Typhoon go through their routine in front of assessors during PDA (public display authorisation) to get certified for public displays. This was at RAF Coningsby.

A USAF F-35 Lightning II flying in the 2023 Abbotsford Airshow. This was the plane that I most excited to see. The pilot put on an incredible demo too, she didn't hold back, showed off all the F-35 can do, and came close to breaking the sound barrier.
