When he broke through the fog the runway lights were visible, but England would have to overfly a 389th barracks to make the runway. Rather than risk the lives of his men, he turned away and was killed in the crash. Alexandria Air Force Base was renamed England Air Force Base June 23, 1955 in honor of Colonel England.
