Actor John Phillip Law was instrumental in creating a lasting motion-picture monument to the legendary Red Baron. In his own inimitable style, he brought Manfred von Richthofen to life in the best possible way. Without a doubt, the 1971 film Von Richthofen and Brown should prove to be Law's most enduring work — It's not just an inspired movie... it's the Red Baron film.

John Phillip Law passed away May 13, 2008, possibly without even knowing that VR&B was his career defining masterpiece — Belatedly, the film is experiencing a renaissance with home video audiences worldwide.

"Brake a leg," John!

Ormond was a friend of my fathers back in the early 1970s when this photo was taken by my dad in the spring of 1971 at Vancouver airport. Ormond was shuttling between Cold Lake AFB in Alberta and Vancouver usually in a T-33 (sometimes an CF-5) and would work on the refurbishment of his Hawker Sea Fury that was hangared at the CP Hangar. I tagged along with my dad on many visits to see Ormond and sometimes he came to our home. I was only 15 years old at the time and he was always patient and helpfull in satisfying my enthusiasm for all things aviation and gave me (I still have) an old WWII leather flying helmet and an oxygen mask dating from the 70s as used by the RCAF, Ormond was killed while flying a P-51 Mustang on July 3, 1977 in Germany.

I came across this in my basement, it was sitting in boxes of forgotten work. Francis "Gabby" Gabreski was the top scoring American fighter ace in the ETO during WWII, having downed 34.5 aircraft in aerial combat. He is one of only seven U.S. combat pilots to become an ace in two wars. He lived from January 28, 1919 - January 31, 2002. Gouache on board, 8.75" x 6.25"

The sight of Spitfires escorting Lancasters - and in daylight - might seem highly unusual but operations like this were part of the massive Allied air effort against German forces after D-Day in 1944.

From Leo McInstrey's book 'Lancaster': " ... as the number of daylight raids increased, the Lancasters received fighter cover from the RAF for the first time in the war. 'The Spitfires were a very welcome sight and would accompany you to the target,' said Bob Knights of 617 Squadron."

One of my absolute favourite movies of all time. (Of course it's title doesn't hurt either). The best line in VR&B is — "I just wish to hell they'd paint these damn planes a nice drab brown... the English can see us a mile away."

The Italian Test pilot was sitting next to me in the hangar looking at ( my laptop) the pictures of the aerial photoshoot we did, just hours earlier, he liked this picture a lot and that is why i am posting it here.We were chatting about all kind of aviation stuff. He was in his late thirties(i estimate),a energetic person, someone you like, seconds after you have met him.Capt. Gabriele Orlandi and This Typhoon number MM7278/RS-23 are now world famous as millions have seen (the video of) him fly/CRASH into the Mediterranean sea 4 day's after i met him.I could not believe it, i was shocked to get the confirmation!

He was a really nice person and awesome fighterpilot!

The third female pilot in this sequence was X-Wing Pilot Wona Goban (Gold Nine) played by Gabby Wong.

Fighter Ace Lieutenant Frank Luke Jr. from Phoenix, Arizona of the 27th Aero Squadron of the United States Army Air Service stands in front of his SPAD S.XIII fighter plane in a field near Rattentaut, France on 19 September, 1918. Lt. Luke was the first airman in American military history to receive the Medal of Honor and he is second in aerial victories by Americans in World War 1 with 18 behind only the great Eddie Rickenbacker. Luke was the most productive fighter ace for any side in the entire war, because he achieved 18 aerial victories on just 10 missions over a period of eight days. His career as a pilot only lasted a 17 days when on September 29, 1918 Luke was mortally wounded by a bullet fired from a machine gun on a hillside as he attacked a group of three German observation balloons near Dun-sur-Meuse. He was forced to crash land in a field where he fled to a nearby forest and continued to discharge his Colt Model 1911 pistol until he collapsed and died by a stream. This photograph was taken just 10 days before his death.
