Photographed just a couple of weeks after it was unveiled in September 2005, the Battle of Britain Memorial on Victoria Embankment, London W1 is a tribute to the pilots who fought in the campaign of Summer 1940, effectively thwarting Nazi hopes of overcoming Great Britain’s resistance to their aims of European conquest. At the Memorial’s centre is a sculpture of airmen scrambling for their aircraft during the attritional battle. The Memorial lists 2,936 pilots who fought in the Battle of Britain on the Allied side. The sculptor of the Memorial is Paul Day.

At a restaurant in Stans - 2 Mirage III's exposed. Their home base at the dissolution was the Military Airfield at Buochs, where ist was equipped with Mirage IIIRS . Fliegerstaffel 10 carried as their coat of arms the AMIR badge (AMIR = Aufklärer Mirage (reconnaissance Mirage)). This badge shows on a white ground a falcon head drawn with black lines, the neck of which is filled with blue color.

I came across this in my basement, it was sitting in boxes of forgotten work. Francis "Gabby" Gabreski was the top scoring American fighter ace in the ETO during WWII, having downed 34.5 aircraft in aerial combat. He is one of only seven U.S. combat pilots to become an ace in two wars. He lived from January 28, 1919 - January 31, 2002. Gouache on board, 8.75" x 6.25"

The Italian Test pilot was sitting next to me in the hangar looking at ( my laptop) the pictures of the aerial photoshoot we did, just hours earlier,We were chatting about all kind of aviation stuff. He was in his late thirties(i estimate),a energetic person, someone you like, seconds after you have met him.Capt. Gabriele Orlandi and This Typhoon number MM7278/RS-23 are now world famous as millions have seen (the video of) him fly/CRASH into the Mediterranean sea 4 day's after i met him.I could not believe it, i was shocked to get the confirmation!
He was a really nice person and awesome fighterpilot!

The sight of Spitfires escorting Lancasters - and in daylight - might seem highly unusual but operations like this were part of the massive Allied air effort against German forces after D-Day in 1944.
From Leo McInstrey's book 'Lancaster': " ... as the number of daylight raids increased, the Lancasters received fighter cover from the RAF for the first time in the war. 'The Spitfires were a very welcome sight and would accompany you to the target,' said Bob Knights of 617 Squadron."

The third female pilot in this sequence was X-Wing Pilot Wona Goban (Gold Nine) played by Gabby Wong.

Photographed the 1956 De Havilland Canada DHC-1B-2-S5 Chipmunk on display at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum located at the John C Munro Hamilton International Airport in the town of Mount Hope in the City of Hamilton Ontario Canada
The Museum's Chipmunk was built at Downsview in 1956. The aircraft served with Canadian Forces Training Command until 1971, when it was purchased by John Weir, one of the Museum’s founders. John had been a fighter pilot and a prisoner of war in Stalag Luft III, the camp made famous by the “great escape” of 76 Allied aircrew in 1944. He donated the aircraft to the Museum 1973.

A Marine flyer since 1935, Colonel Gregory “Pappy” Boyington was encouraged to resign his commission to fly with the Flying Tigers in China. There he got credit for six Japanese planes. But when he applied for reinstatement in the Marine Corps, he found himself disgraced for “having left the Corps in time of national emergency.” For nearly three months he parked cars in a Seattle garage until, in desperation, he telegraphed an Under Secretary of the Navy. In a few days he was on the way to the South Pacific where he was given a squadron of misfits. These pilots, unwanted by other outfits, and led by the oldest active Marine fighter pilot, made one of the great records of the war. The heart of this book is the colorful story of Boyington’s Black Sheep Squadron.
“Pappy” Boyington was a wild, hard drinking, professional Marine flyer who was one of the most unconventional heroes of World War II. As wild and independent as he was, he was a competent leader of men and had no desire to change his ways. He had never let anyone kick him around, and he saw no reason why he should let the Japanese do so in the air or after he was taken prisoner.
Winner of a Congressional Medal of Honor and a Navy Cross for his achievements while leading the Black Sheep Squadron, “Pappy” Boyington had twenty months as a prisoner of the Japanese in which to gain emotional maturity and sobriety. He freely admitted that during the nearly two years he spent as a P.O.W. his health improved due to the enforced sobriety. He retired from the Marine Corps on August 1, 1947.
Many people know of Pappy Boyington from the mid-1970s television show Baa Baa Black Sheep, a drama about the Black Sheep squadron based very loosely on Boyington's memoir, with Boyington portrayed by Robert Conrad. Many of Boyington's men were irate over this show, charging it was mostly fiction and presented a glamorized portrayal of Boyington. Boyington himself often told interviewers and audiences that the television series was fiction and only loosely related to actual history.
