Photographed just a couple of weeks after it was unveiled in September 2005, the Battle of Britain Memorial on Victoria Embankment, London W1 is a tribute to the pilots who fought in the campaign of Summer 1940, effectively thwarting Nazi hopes of overcoming Great Britain’s resistance to their aims of European conquest. At the Memorial’s centre is a sculpture of airmen scrambling for their aircraft during the attritional battle. The Memorial lists 2,936 pilots who fought in the Battle of Britain on the Allied side. The sculptor of the Memorial is Paul Day.
