For the first time with external stores, an F-35B test aircraft executes a vertical landing at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md., in September 2013. The aircraft carried two AIM-9X test weapons on its wings.

Flying over Santa Monica
(conditions were very hazy & I had to take this almost into the sun at noon so I did what I could in PS to make this a bit better.) They flew very low over the Los Angeles area several times so that many people could get a look at it. The traffic was a nightmare all morning with thousands of people trying to get to a good viewing spot--they had designated areas to view it and many couldn't get near. I took this about a mile from my house but discovered shortly after that it flew so close I could have just gone outside to the street and maybe gotten a better exposed photo. And yes, per Maia's comment below when they take it to the museum they will have a parade route where they will be chopping down over 400 trees to make way for it. I'm not happy about that but despite protests, that is what is happening.

An incredible demonstration of the capabilities and the skills from the Patrouille de France, which is the precision aerobatic demonstration unit of the French Air and Space Force. This photography is not fake or an image made by an artificial intelligence. It is the results of the luck, as the picture would not have been the same if I took it 1/10 seconds later given the speed and maneuverability of the planes. Congratulations to the team!
De open dagen van de Koninklijke Luchtmacht waren een groot succes. Binnen 2 dagen bezochten 280.000 mensen de airshows op vliegbasis Leeuwarden. Absolute hoogtepunt was de het eerste publieke optreden van de F-35 lightning II, voorheen de JSF (Joint Strike Fighter) die hier spectaculair door de bewolking breekt en zelf een eigens condenswolk vormt.
The open days of the Royal Netherlands AirForce were a great success. 280.000 spectators were witnesses of spectaculair airshows. The highlight was the first European show of the F-35 Lightning II fighter jet (Joint Strike Fighter). The jet breaks through the clouds and forms a spectaculair vapourcloud around the jet.
Delivered to 48th Fighter Wing at RAF Laken heath, Suffolk on July 20, 1992. Assigned to the 17th Weapon Squadron Nellis AFB since 2004.
