St Mary's dominates the village of Newton Regis and serves the most northerly parish in Warwickshire.

The building itself is aisleless but with a later clerestorey and quite light inside, being mainly plain glazed except for the odd medieval fragment here and there and two recent windows by Warwickshire based artist Roger Fifield.

The outstanding medieval feature here however is on the north side of the sanctuary, a highly unusual 14th century priest's tomb in a recess with a slab in high relief portraying a praying bust of the deceased amidst canopywork (inhabited by angels) with two kneeling mourners below, a unique composition as far as I know, worn but still enjoyable.

Postcard from Naomi Austin [Fifield] to Mrs. W. W. Austin [Alma Austin.] ..“Dear Grandma, This is a game between the officers and my own children. I am pitching. This is a beautiful day. I wish I could spend it with you. Love, Naomi.”..At a later date, Naomi Fifield added the explanatory note, “the children of my collage” over the words, “my own children.”..The postmark is from Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Given the previous postcard from the Sleighton Farm, it seems likely that in 1918 Naomi was still working at the Sleighton Farm School for Girls. It was a school for “troubled girls” located in Glen Mills Pennsylvania. Naomi would have been 23 when this postcard was posted and, presumably, the nurse or a counselor.

“Howe Scale, 1892

Howe Scale Company

Rutland, Vermont

The history of the Howe scale Company can be traced to the mid-1860s when two young inventors, Frank M. Strong and Thomas Ross, from Brandon, Vermont, secured a patent for a design of a ball-bearing scale. The ball-bearing design provided a shock absorber for the pivot on which the platform of the scale rests, thereby reducing the stress on the scale and improving its accuracy. In 1866 Strong and Ross exhibited several of their scales at the annual fair of the American Institute in up-state New York where they attracted the attention of John Howe Jr. Impressed with the design of the Strong and Ross scales, Howe purchase their patent rights and began to manufacture their designs under the Howe Scale Company at Brandon, Vermont. The Howe Scale Company became world-renowned, earning several awards at fairs and exhibitions, including the gold, silver, and bronze medals at the 1867 Pair Exhibition. In 1878 the plant was moved to Rutland, Vermont, where it continued operations until 1982.”

“Lathe, Circa 1865

Fifield and Company

Camden, New York

A lathe, the oldest and most common type of turning machine, holds and routes metal or wood while a cutting tool shapes ant material. The tool may be moved parallel to or across the direction of rotation to form parts that have a cylindrical or ----- shape or to cut threads. With special attachments, a lathe may be used to produce flat surfaces.

This Fifield and Company lathe is the oldest piece in the Glove Machine Shop exhibit. The decorative detailing, including the inverted hearts on the base, the open change gearing, and the feed sorrow located on the back of the bed helped historians date the construction of the machine to circa 1865.”
