Fifield's Come Back Inn has seen many trains over the years. First, the Soo Line plyed these rails on their way to Ashland, Wisconsin. Then, the Wisconsin Central as they stopped and switched pulpwood loads across the street. Then, it was the Canadian National, as they passed through the town on their way to Park Falls. Now, it's Watco's FOXY as they switch pulpwood loads at the aformentioned landing across the street.

David Buck's Fifield Central private railway near Windsor. Former Finnish Railways Class Hr1 Pacific 91016 'Lady Patricia' working on the 1524mm (5ft) gauge demonstration line on 31st May 2024. Built by Tampella Ab, Tampere, Finland in 1955 (Works No.946), the former Finnish Railways No.1016 was one of a class of 22 two-cylinder simple superheated design built between 1937 and 1957, numbered 1000-1021, and used on main line passenger work until the wholesale end of steam traction in 1971. No.1016 was taken out of service at Ilsalmi depot on 17th April 1970 and was placed into the country's strategic reserve fleet of steam locomotives. Imported into the U.K. in 1995, it was moved to Fifield in 2009. It was named 'Lady Patricia' by Sir William McAlpine in July 2010, and after restoration at Fifield it ran under its own steam again on 28th June 2013. As the largest operational steam locomotive in the U.K. a full overhaul was completed in June 2023, when it was turned out in a striking 'anglicised' livery as No.91016, with a fictitious 81J (Fifield) shed allocation plate.

Fifield Furniture, 500 East Coolbaugh Street, Red Oak, Iowa. This building was originally a National Guard Armory. Built in 1896 at a cost of $6,000, the original building was only one story high. In 1905, Pratt and Pratt, a Red Oak Contractor, used screw jacks and blocks to raise the entire roof, and a second floor was added. The building was used as a theatre and civic meeting house in addition to the headquarters for Iowa National Guard, Company M. The National Guard eventually moved elsewhere and the building became a furniture store in 1960s. Fifield Furniture is now permanently closed.
The CN's Bradley Jct- Park Falls turn stops to pull loads / spot empties for the pulpwood loader in Fifield. Sadly, CN has encouraged the pulpwood shippers to landings in Prentice and Tony, WI
Hester (Ellingwood) Fifield, 1820-1895, never had children of her own but she was foster mother to two generations of my mother's family. She and her husband Edward moved West from Albany, Maine to Dummer, New Hampshire where he listed his occupation as "river man."
Many volunteer hours were put in during 1979 and 1980 getting Duluth's first tourist railroad ready for operation. One of the big jobs was tightening bolts on the many angle bars that held the 67-pound rail together. Here Jergen Fuhr (left), Peter Fifield (center) and Norm Livgard work on joints just west of Frog Pond. The "ballast" if I recall correctly was crushed and screened slag that was being "mined" by Priola and Johnson from the nearby U.S. Steel Duluth Works. We loaded the material into old DM&IR ore cars near South Steelton. The ore cars are still on the property, stored at Riverside Junction and unused for many years.
To access some of the more remote locations on the railroad we used track cars (speeders) as well as LSRM’s former Erie Mining Pontiac Chieftain hi-rail inspection wagon. Jergen was the custodian of the car while it was being used and I remember him talking about the effort expended to keep it running and all the gas it guzzled while he drove it back and forth from his house in Lakeside. He said he received lots of looks when driving it down the road – I bet he did!
Remember all these fun times Peter?

Many of the small towns in the northwoods have hallmarks to days gone by. As evidence- the "Groceries-Tavern" painted on the front of the Come Back Inn. Don't pass these opportunities up- they won't last forever.
The first day of 2020 was so dull and grey, that I did not take any photographs. I spent my time working on my last photos from last decade!

The Bailey bridge is a type of portable, pre-fabricated, truss bridge. It was developed by the British during World War II for military use and saw extensive use by British, Canadian and the American military engineering units.
A Bailey bridge had the advantages of requiring no special tools or heavy equipment to assemble. The wood and steel bridge elements were small and light enough to be carried in trucks and lifted into place by hand, without requiring the use of a crane. The bridges were strong enough to carry tanks. Bailey bridges continue to be extensively used in civil engineering construction projects and to provide temporary crossings for foot and vehicle traffic.

Whilst looking for a nice country pub around Salisbury we drove past this lovely old church so we or rather I had to stop to take a few shots.

New Year's day and we were off exploring our new stamping ground.
We came across this ramshackle shed, almost completely covered in ivy. I wasn't brave enough to peek inside ... never know what might be in there!

Unfortunately I could not identify the location. I can only find a village in Wisconsin called Fifield, but in the caption it looks like an ie.
Caption originally on the reverse:

I'm fairly sure this truck was new to D&J Campbell of Connel, Argyll & Bute on timber haulage as FH16DJC- the registration is now on their newer FH16.

More shots of the sunny, stormy skies of South Wiltshire and North Dorset which we enjoyed on New Year's Day.

The first order of business at Prentice was spotting the empty lumber cars at the Biewer Sawmill. I just did this shot in January with CN but found it an interesting contrast now with the verdant framing. Looking up the old Medford-Prentice segment at the remaining track. The log cars were left just short of the Ashland Jct. switch. Once this move was done it was back to the junction for the 9 log empties, then up the Ashland Sub to Fifield. June 6, 2022.
