Lelutka Avalon and Enfer Sombre ( my DJ themed look for Saturday)

Markyate Cell, an Elizabethan mansion (with a longer religious prehistory) in Markyate, Hertfordshire. The house is situated in the midst of a wonderful park. The gates you see in the other images of this series belong to this mansion. Do you like it? It could be yours - it is for sale again.

“She was a wild one; always stomping on eggshells that everyone else tip-toed on.” – Kaitlin Foster

One of the gates of Markyate Cell, an Elizabethan mansion with a longer religious prehistory, in Markyate, Hertfordshire. The gate is probably 19th century, but I am not so sure about the four fierce creatures that you see on top. In this image, the gargoyle on the left corner is shown in late afternoon sun and in some detail. The beasts, let us assume they are meant to be lions - for this is England where there are plenty of these indeed, are holding a shield probably originally sporting a coat of arms. This was a must-have when you owned such an estate, and if you did not come with the credentials of nobility you would find ways to buy a title (and a coat of arms, of course). Yes, and you would plant a couple of lions at your gate.

Amari always seems to be getting told off by the cubs and with good reason because he can't help himself and constantly annoys them.

The circle of life in action. As cute as a Great Gray Owl is, it is still a bird of prey.

Too awesome for words to experience, such a marvelous mixture of regal fierceness and total dorkiness! I just wish someone with a really great camera had been there to capture it, but there was just me and my old Nikon.

Post storm waves breaking at Cap Forchu.

The Met Office in the UK has started to give names to especially bad storms and last Saturday 9th February it was the tail end of Storm Eric. In the North Atlantic storms are nothing near a Hurricane but strong enough with gusts of 60mph to bring down trees. The last time I took pictures at Newhaven was Storm Brian in October 2017. Conditions then were far more severe with twice the sustained wind speed. For Storm Eric the main track of the storm was across the north rather than the south as it was in 2017. The main part of the storm was on the previous day but then it was far too dull for decent images and winds were forecast to remain strong Saturday morning when it was far brighter.

The location at Newhaven on the South Coast also had the advantage of a wide and high shingle beach providing a safe location to take pictures even in a fierce storm. The wall is a breakwater for the harbor and with a serious storm massive waves come in from the SW and hit the breakwater also creating a lot of backwash and turbulence. I found a new spot for the earlier pictures I took which was on a slight hill just before the cliffs which gives a slightly higher viewpoint and is also out of range of salt spray. It is a lot easier taking pictures without the rain cover I had for later when I moved to the beach

This picture was taken about 2 hours before high tide. Closer to high tide when the majority of photographers arrived the wind was also abating and the waves were much lower. During the 3 hours I was there I took 640 images.

The picture was taken with a Sony A700 with a Minolta 75-300mm zoom at 250mm. Taken handheld No chance of a steady tripod in those conditions. The image was processed first in Capture One Raw Editor. Then it was Topaz Denoise followed by Topaz Clarity and Topaz Adjust for more detail. Finally I added a brightness adjustment layer for an increase in brightness in the light in the lighthouse to improve that additional focal point using a layer mask.Contitions were fairly mono but it is a colour image.

I've just bought myself a used d500 on the pretext that it will force me to get out more and use it. So I want a waxwing winter and loads of owl opportunities - not too much to ask for I feel.

“Fiercely Bald” Celebrating bald eagles today on this American Eagle Day coinciding with the summer solstice. My first day of a two-week, epic, Alaskan adventure began in Juneau. I rented a car, drove past the swarms of tourists pouring from cruise ships until I found a spot where nature prevailed. There were eagles everywhere, and this one had landed on a rock not far from where I sat. I inched as close as it would allow to capture this portrait that over-flowed my frame. Happy Summer! With a Tricolored Heron

With a Great Blue Heron

Lanky, fierce-looking, glossy blackbird. A bit larger than a jay; smaller, proportionally longer-tailed and shorter-winged than a crow. Staring yellow eye and long heavy bill (compared to Red-winged Blackbird). Often in flocks with other blackbirds in winter. Forages in fields, scrubby areas, and open woods. Visits feeders.

After going through hundreds of shots from the Manistee, Frankfort and Point Betsie lights from this past October's gales this monochrome emerged as a personal favorite. Hoping there are more big waves to come.
