Brazilian Pygmy-Owl - species endemic to Brazil. It favours evergreen Atlantic Forest and its edges, and is found at elevations up to about 1000 m. Like other pygmy-owls, this species is partially diurnal and is easily attracted using a whistled imitation of hollow-sounding, double- or treble-noted song. Despite being relatively abundant, currently very little is known of the Least Pygmy-Owl’s ecology. Picture taken at Iporanga - São Paulo.

Chinese palaces, temples and mansions have on their roofs a special kind of ornaments called wenshou or zoomorphic ornaments, some on the main ridges and some on the sloping and branch ridges.
The monstrous thing at either end of the main ridge, called chiwen, appears roughly like the tail of a fish. Fierce and formidable, it looks as if it were ready to devour the whole ridge; so it is also known as tunjishou or the ridge-devouring beast. It is, according to Chinese mythology, one of the sons of the Dragon King who rules the seas. It is said to be able to stir up waves and change them into rains.
So ancient Chinese put a chiwen at either end of the main ridge for its magic powers to conjure up a downpour to put out any fire that might break out. But for fear that it might gobble up the ridge, they transfixed it on the roof with a sword.
At the end of the sloping and branch ridges there are often a string of smaller animals, their sizes and numbers being decided by the status of the owner of the building in the feudal hierarchy.
These small animals were also believed to be capable of putting out fires. While this can be easily dismissed as superstition, they do add to the grandeur and magnificence of the imperial buildings.
If Wild Cats could vote, I'm sure this one would vote for independence. Taken at the British Wildlife Centre six weeks ago.

Birds of prey are fascinating and majestic animals. They can generally be defined as birds that feed on animals that they catch alive. Representatives of these two orders can be found almost everywhere in the world. Although these groups are distantly related, the behavioural and anatomical characteristics they share appear to be mainly the result of parallel evolution.

It intimidated the weak but strengthened the strong.
On the necklace are the words 'Little & Fierce' which reminds me of the 'fierce conversations' that were the buzz word for having those conversations with under performing staff. Makes me laugh now thinking back on it all.

At only about 7 inches tall the Northern Pygmy-Owl is one of the fiercest of owls. Here he is giving us some attitude.
When endeavoring to get macro shots of Butterflies, encounters with Arachnids are enevitable, and I look forward to these encounters.

During our stay in Paso del Centurion (Cerro Largo, Uruguay) we met Felix, the guard dog of the country house where we stayed.
Blind, old, and very smelly because he liked to wallow in the murky puddles around the farm, he was a fierce guardian of the place, vigilant for any strange noise or outsider approaching the property.
Beyond that, he was very loving with us and accompanied us at all times during our stay.
Similar to the gargoyles on the Notre Dame, the gargoyles on Sacre Coeur are also beautiful and fierce creatures. They also serve the practical purpose of funneling water from the roof when it rains, directing the water out away from the walls and foundations. Montmartre, Paris, France

Lanky, fierce-looking, glossy blackbird. A bit larger than a jay; smaller, proportionally longer-tailed and shorter-winged than a crow. Staring yellow eye and long heavy bill (compared to Red-winged Blackbird). Often in flocks with other blackbirds in winter. Forages in fields, scrubby areas, and open woods. Visits feeders. (eBird)
---------------
I have lots of photos of grackles - they are just too pretty when in good light, they are bold and fun to watch, and they are not shy. Of course, this means that many people think them a pest, and I admit that I do not want them at my feeders because they scare off the other birds. So, this grackle just wanted a bath, but other birds wanted a drink and a bath, too. We grumbled when he was there because he scared off the others, but of course, here is a photo of him enjoying a sunny bath.

"Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow [seed] nor reap [the harvest] nor gather [the crops] into barns, and yet your heavenly Father keeps feeding them. Are you not worth much more than they?" - Matthew 6:26
