â™° Update: Monica crossed the Rainbow Bridge on June 1st, 2023.
On July 1st, 1916, the opening day of the Battle of the Somme, the Newfoundland Regiment fought its first engagement in France, its costliest of the whole war, at Beaumont Hamel, a little village 9 km north of the town of Albert, France. A total of 798 all ranks deployed into the trenches and 22 officers and about 758 other ranks were sent forward against the enemy. Of these, all the officers and slightly under 658 other ranks became casualties. Only around 110 remained unscathed. The first line of trenches you see are the communication trenches. Where the group of people are standing is where the front line was. They walked in the direction that the shadow of the Caribou is pointing and were mown down by machine gun fire in their hundreds. The small group of trees in the top right contained what is now called the "Danger Tree", which was about half-way to their objective and used as a landmark for the Canadian troops to gather and where many of them fell. In behind the tree line at the top of the frame is where the German front line was. The pockmarked landscape still shows the damage of artillery fire.
Texture for you're use. For a more dramatic look overlay in "Multiply" mode in photoshop layers palette, or for a softer look use "over lay" mode. Looks nice on landscapes with a lot of barren sky.

Fields is an unincorporated community in Harney County, Oregon, United States,[1] located 112 miles (180 km) south of Burns. It is the center of commerce for local ranches and the largest community between Denio, Nevada, 22 miles (35 km) to the south, and Frenchglen, Oregon, 52.4 miles (84.3 km) to the north.
The community of Fields consists of a bar, store, cafe, gas station, school, campground, and a few houses. As of 2003, the school has two rooms and two teachers serving kindergarten through eighth grade. High school students are bused to Crane Union High School, two hours (102 miles) away.
Local wildlife include pronghorn, mule deer, elk, bighorn sheep, pheasants, doves, geese, and ducks. Rainbow trout are found in nearby streams. There are also publicly accessible hot springs in the area, including Alvord Hot Springs, Bog Hot Springs, and White Horse Hot Springs. Many photographers are interested in Steens Mountain, which is located about 60 miles (97 km) to the north.[
If there is an upside to the rain and cold we've had this month it's that it turned the snow into concrete. Taking advantage of this added mobility I tried out a new angle at the Autoport. L517 arrived and set out autoracks and a well car this morning before being relieved by the L506 crew. Seen here L506 is just about to depart for Withrow and interchange partners in the cities.
With some SD60s holding down this run for weeks at a time I'm always on the look out for fresh blood. Leader CN 5487 is a recent arrival. A look back revealed that this hasn't been around for 8 years. It was in spotless mint condition back then but I didn't catch it leading before it was gone again.

This was taken just a couple of miles from where i live. I stumbled across it by pure accident as i was diverted on the way to work one morning.
It was taken a few weeks ago now and i nipped out one saturday morning for litterally 40 mins to get these images. Im really pleased with how they came out.
