In June large purple fields of Alaskan lupine (Lupinus nootkatensis) are a common sight all over Iceland. This plant looks native but in fact it was introduced in Iceland in 1945 to prevent erosion of the soil.
Field sparrows are back! These neat little sparrows nest right here in Lake Meyer Park. Note this bird's pretty pink bill - a key ID characteristic since most sparrows have gray or yellow bills.

I have lots of these growing in the garden. It's not anything I've grown or cultivated so they must have come in from the fields behind the house.
Saw this two weeks ago while on a hunt for butterflies...A friend of mine ID'd it for me. I had hoped to get back to see it fully in bloom, but so far that hasn't happened...it looks like an alien:).
Well, I'm back in snowy and cold Idaho. I must say that while the winter may not be as pleasant as in sunny California, I am grateful for the variety and unique beauty of nature in all seasons of the year!
