Another one of the moon rise at Bow Fiddle Rock, Moray.

Fiddle is another name for the bowed string musical instrument more often called a violin. It is also a colloquial term for the instrument used by players in all genres, including classical music. Fiddle playing, or fiddling, refers to various styles of music.

There are few real distinctions between violins and fiddles, though more primitively constructed and smaller violins are more likely to be considered fiddles. Due to the style of the music played, fiddles may optionally be set up with a bridge with a flatter arch to allow multiple strings to be played simultaneously with more ease, such as the droning in Bluegrass music or performing triple stops. Due to the properties and desired sound, fiddlers often choose steel strings (which produce a "brighter" tone) for their instruments, versus gut or synthetic core strings (which produce a deeper tone).

Fiddle is also a common term among musicians who play folk music on the violin. The fiddle is part of many traditional (folk) styles of music which are aural traditions, taught 'by ear' rather than via written music. Another difference in musical styles is fiddling tends to produce rhythms focused on dancing, with associated quick note changes, whereas classical music tends to contain more vibrato and sustained notes. It is less common for a classically trained violinist to play folk music, but today, many fiddlers have classical training.

The Morayshire coastline has some splendid rock features including the Bow Fiddle rock in Portknockie. The long arch scullpted by the water makes this a particularly striking subject. As I made it here in late morning I used an infrared filter for a 3 minute exposure.

12 frames each ISO100 1s @ f/13, stacked. I don't like to boast about a shot being difficult, but it was all-systems-go with tripod, wind, remembering to pause a few seconds for camera-shake to disspiate before remote-releasing, all while the light was changing fast (it went from dull overcast to bright sunlit yellow rock and slightly back in 23 seconds). There were at least 9 other frames that didn't make the cut at all. None of that `slowing down, waiting for optimum light and pushing the button once' nonsense that landscapies like to spout.

Bow Fiddle Rock is situated in Portknockie in the North east of Scotland.

I had two really old fiddles that needed repair - traded them in (and paid some money) to get this beauty instead, so I can actually play. Have not played for more than 20 years, so will have to learn again. But loooove my new toy - it is old and has soul. Great sound.

The show went out with a bang and crash! See the cymbal stand leaning at 45 degree angle? Tony was so energetic on the drum kit that he semi-accidentally tipped the stand over. I was innocently taking photos but did happen to catch the stand in mid-fall.

I like keeping at least one fiddle out of its case so that it can easily be picked up and played on impulse.

I quite like it in this semi-desaturated rendition; it seems to bring a melancholy mood to the scene, not entirely unrealistic.
