Union Pacific 4-8-4 FEF-3 class ALCO Northern steam locomotive # 8444 with its railfan excursion train is stopped on a double ended siding in the late afternoon sun as it waits for another train to pass while on its return trip to Denver, Col, summer 1980. Various passenger and photographers stepped off the train while waiting for the met, but there was already a group of observers on hand at this location.

It’s front end Friday again, aka #FEF for hashtag fanatics and collectors.

Here we are at Catcott, and it looks like Bob Geeza Cat is about to leap onto locomotive footplates again after his successful attempt a month or two ago.

Bob has many fans, here in the land of the inch high and that fangled internet thingamajig, so a good turnout is ensured especially from the pointers and wavers. Though I’d expect to see smarmy ladies’ man Terry Tuttle-Thomas-Smythe trying to run some betting scam, I’m sure he’s here out of frame - such a bounder and a cad.

We’ve not seen our moonshiners with Sentinel steam lorry for a while, so here it is, its hot still no doubt in full flow brewing illicit liquor whilst on the move (or stationary in this case because of the crossing).

Go Bob! But remember to get off at the next scheduled stop at Glastonbury, for last time you had a snooze in the warm cab and ended up in Poole goods yard and had to spend the night with Nasal Nigel in an old plate-layer’s hut with only his throbbing TT gauge ‘Flying Scotsman’ for warmth.

Another photo from the impromptu car shoot from a few weeks ago. For FEF or "Front End Friday" as the car enthusiasts like to call it!

Cab view. For this setup I referenced historical photographs of the FEF-3 or FEF-2 locomotives that had just received their conversion to oil burning. I also attempted to incorporate touches of metallic silver or metallic gold.

Union Pacific #844 is one of the most iconic locomotives that has ever graced the main line. Both powerful and elegant, she has captured the attention and imagination of railfans since her delivery to Union Pacific in December of 1944.

#844 was the last steam locomotive delivered to UP and the only steam locomotive of any American Class 1 railroad that has never been retired. She has seen revenue and excursion service for over 78 years. During this time, she has had several modifications and upgrades. Some minor, such as a livery change and some major such as a Worthington SA feedwater heater added around 1955.

For this build, I wanted to capture her essence and model her as she would have appeared in April of 1949. A careful eye will note several key features: by this time she was modified to be oil burning, a mars light had been installed, she was still using the Sellers exhaust steam injector and she wore the two-tone gray paint scheme in Harbor Mist Gray and Armour Yellow.

This model is 8-wide, 1:48 scale and displays #844 as she would have been seen while pulling the Overland Limited, Los Angeles Limited or Portland Rose in April of 1949. #844 represents the absolute apex of duel-service steam and I want this model to represent nothing less. It is powered by two large power function motors with a 3:5 gear ratio so that she has both high tractive effort and can travel at high speed.

Next step…building the instructions and ordering parts!

Then, of course routes 147 and 241 can revert to running via Keir Hardie estate to Canning Town. Union Pacific railfan excursion train led by FEF-3 class 4-8-4 ALCO Northern steam locomotive # 8444 waits on double ended siding while an on coming freight train led by SD40-2 # 8077 passes on a main line in Colorado, summer 1980. Numerous railfan are standing in the various cars vestibules with the dutch doors opened so that may either observe or photograph the on coming freight train. In this area of the excursion trip we are situated in big farm country. You can see the engineer and perhaps the head brakeman in the SD40-2 cab. The steam engine tender was located one coach and a baggage car ahead of my coach dutch door window, and you can see one of the elephant ears sticking out from the steam locomotives side. Notice that some of the UNION PACIFIC red lettering lettering has peeled of the front of the locomotive.

Many of the people may not realize that this is how they typically fill the tender in modern times. You may also observe two crew members wearing blue hardhats that are greasing the locomotive rod bearings.

Union Pacific

Former UP 8444

Union Pacific 844 Class FEF-3 was built by the American Locomotive Company in December 1944. She has 80 inch drivers, boiler pressure of 300 lbs, 25 x 32 inch Cylinders and can deliver 63,750 pounds of tractive effort.

The FEF was a series of three types of 4-8-4 steam locomotives owned and operated by the Union Pacific Railway. The classes were: FEF-1; FEF-2; FEF-3. "FEF" was an acronym for the wheel arrangement, "four-eight-four."

FEF-3

Except for the use of some substitute materials, the final batch of ten were nearly identical to the FEF-2. After World War II, coal supplies were affected by a series of strikes. In order to safeguard operations, UP converted the 800s to oil burning, and a 6,000 US gallons (23,000 l; 5,000 imp gal) tank was fitted in the bunker space. Otherwise, few modifications were needed to insure years of mainline service. These were the last steam locomotives delivered for the UP. 844, the last of the FEF-3 class, is the longest continuously operating 4-8-4 engine in the world, and the only one never retired by a Class I railroad. Like many of the "late era" steam locomotives, their final design was cut short by the advent of new monarchs of the rails, diesels. Although it is stated that the UP FEF series was designed to safely operate at 120 mph (190 km/h), no one really knows how fast the final 4-8-4 could go
