Feeding them nectar at Chessington Zoo.
The Rainbow Lorikeet is a medium sized parrot, with the length ranging from 25–30 cm (9.8-11.8 in) in size, and has a wingspan of about 17 cm (6.7 in). The weight varies from 75–157 g (2.6–5.5 oz). The plumage of the nominate race, as with all subspecies, is very bright. The head is deep blue with a greenish-yellow nuchal collar, and the rest of the upperparts (wings, back and tail) are deep green. The chest is red with blue-black barring. The belly is deep green, and the thighs and rump are yellow with deep green barring. In flight a yellow wing-bar contrasts clearly with the red underwing coverts.
There is little to visually distinguish between the sexes, however to a keen observer of their colouring and behaviour, their dimorphism is readily apparent.
Juveniles have a black beak which gradually brightens to orange in the adults.
I feed & TNR a colony of cats near my home (although I kind of suck at the return part :p). Every day when I went to feed Molly would run to meet me, but she would run if I tried to touch her. She was also trap smart. She was getting thinner & thinner, just wasting away beofre my eyes, but she would never eat with the others. I would leave a bowl for her away from the others, but still she kept getting smaller. One night she let down her guard for an instant and I scruffed her & dropped her in a carrier.
When my vet examined her he discovered the reason for her weight...she had horrible stomatitis...her gums were so inflamed they were actually bleeding. She was starving to death, but it hurt too much to eat.
I knew I couldn't put her back outside, so now she lives inside with me. The stomatitis is gone (along with all her teeth except for canines & incisors) and she's fat & happy. :D

Four baby robins hatched this week in a nest under my deck. I camped underneath to take some feeding photos. Ma and Pa took turns gathering food and landing on a nearby deck post to scope me out before flying food up to the nest.

The three baby Robins are growing fast, but are still very wobbly.
So ugly they are kind of cute : )
