Willie-Wagtail mother with nest built on wire fence feeds the first hatchling.

We were supposed to get only a light dusting of snow but it's up to around 3-4" so far and counting. I'd forgotten what a great shelter the table itself made on the deck but Lynda remembered and set feed out in an old water dish. There's also a board next to the house protected by the overhang that gets lots of visitors. I keep trying to catch a shot of the varied species that congregate together - this and the next are the best so far but it seems more crowded before I get the camera in place.

Dollard

Ems estuary: The Dollart is at the bottom rightThe Dollart (Dutch: Dollard) is a bay between northern Netherlands and Germany, on the west side of the estuary of the Ems river. Most of it dries at low tide. Many water birds feed there.

The Dollart was likely created between 1219 and 1413, by the rising waterlevel and some floods. However, in the beginning that wasn't a real problem. The land was protected by dikes. But in the battle between the schieringers and vetkopers, two medieval Frisian parties, some dikes were attacked. Some historians think that those dikes collapsed in 1413 and overflowed the land (Reiderland). In 1520 the Dollart had its largest surface. Between then and the 19th century, the Dollart had partly been re-empoldered again.

Nowadays it's a paradise for all kinds of birds and other animals that live around water. The foundation of protecting and examining the landscape of Groningen, Het Groninger Landschap, organizes excursions to the Dollart around three times a year.

The Netherlands and Germany do not agree on the exact course of the border through the bay.

If you have difficulty pronouncing the name just remember that Howth rhymes with both.

If you like eating out and if you like seafood then Howth is the place to go. Personally I would recommend Aqua. If you are not interested in the many restaurants and pubs the place still has a lot to offer as it is a popular area for birdwatching and sailing. It is also popular with anglers. Howth is also a popular destination for cyclists and hillwalkers, particularly on weekends.

There are plenty of sea mammals, such as seals in the harbour.

I must admit that I was a bit surprised so see a notice which read as follows: "A person shall not feed a seal from the quayside or from any other place in this port. A person who contravenes this Bye-Law is guilty of an offence and is liable on summary conviction to a fine nor exceeding Euro 5,000". Today there were many people feeding the seals and I checked a number of tourist guides (in Easons) and many of them suggest "feeding the seals" in Howth as a recommended activity.

The most famous visitor to Howth may have been King George IV of England, who visited Ireland in 1821 and is chiefly remembered because he staggered off the boat in a highly inebriated state. He did manage to leave his footprints at the point where he stepped ashore on the West Pier.

Then I undo both clamps (the one pictured above, and the one on the extension tube that connects with the G-tube port in Little Quinn's stomach) to allow the formula to run all the way through the tubing, thus eliminating air bubbles. Once this is done, I reclamp the clamps and pour the formula I've collected in the above procedure back into the bag.

This couple showed up at La Salle Park this morning with a very large sack of corn feed! Within minutes they were surrounded! I was relieved to see that someone was feeding the waterfowl as the bay is totally frozen over.
