This bronze statue features King Edward VII in uniform on horseback. It stands on a sandstone plinth featuring relief panels showing allegorical figures. It is located on the corner of Macquarie and Bridge Streets, opposite the Conservatorium of Music. Within a few days of King Edward’s death a proposal was presented to the Lord Mayor of Sydney for the erection of a memorial to the late King in the soon-to-be constructed National Capital. This proposal, however, came to nothing, and it was another 12 months before the first steps were taken towards erecting the memorial in Sydney. The sculptor Thomas Brock (1847-1922) was one of Britain’s most prominent sculptors of the era. He is best known for his public monuments and statuary in London, especially the Victoria Memorial Buckingham Palace. R_11717

Now Playing Defying Gravity

Something has changed within me

Something is not the same

I'm through with playing by the rules of someone else's game

Too late for second-guessing

Too late to go back to sleep

It's time to trust my instincts, close my eyes, and leap...

It's time to try defying gravity

Kiss me goodbye, I'm defying gravity

I think I'll try defying gravity

You can't bring me down

I'm through accepting limits 'cause someone says they're so

Some things I cannot change, but 'til I try, I'll never know

Too long I've been afraid of losing love I guess I've lost

Well if that's love, it comes at much too high a cost

I'd sooner buy defying gravity

Kiss me goodbye, I'm defying gravity

I think I'll try defying gravity

You can't bring me down

Unlimited, our future is unlimited

And I've just had a vision almost like a prophecy

I know it sounds truly crazy

And true, the vision's hazy

But I swear someday I'll be

Flying so high

Kiss me goodbye

So if you care to find me, look to the Western sky!

As someone told me lately, everyone deserves the chance to fly

And if I'm flying solo, at least I'm flying free

To those who ground me, take a message back from me!

Tell them how I am defying gravity

I'm flying high, defying gravity

And soon I'll match them in renown

And nobody in all of Oz

No Wizard that there is or was

Is ever gonna bring me down!

This is as close as my lens will let me get to the Cicadas features.

The Lighthouse in Glasgow is Scotland's Centre for Design and Architecture.

One of the key features of The Lighthouse is the uninterrupted view over Glasgow's cityscape available from the Mackintosh Tower at the north of the building, which is accessible via a helical staircase from the third floor.

This is a vintage Christmas embossed postcard, copyrighted 1908 by Julius Bien & Co. N.Y.

The postcard features an illustration of Santa Claus with a white beard, wearing a red hat and a holly wreath. Santa is holding a plate with a large, decorated Christmas pudding (or plum pudding).

The text "A MERRY CHRISTMAS" is visible on the plate.

The card number "5004" is printed in the bottom left corner.

Christmas pudding and plum pudding are essentially two names for the same dish: a dense, steamed dessert made from dried fruits, spices, and suet. The name "plum pudding" is an older term. In pre-Victorian English, the word "plum" was used as a general term for all kinds of dried fruits, such as raisins, currants, and sultanas, not the fresh stone fruit we call a plum today. The dish is traditionally prepared weeks or even months in advance to allow the flavors to mature, often involving family members stirring the mixture and making a wish. On Christmas Day, it is usually served warm, doused in brandy, and set alight for a dramatic presentation.

Santa Claus looks excited in the image because, in the context of the Victorian and Edwardian eras, the Christmas pudding was a highly anticipated and significant part of the Christmas feast, symbolizing family unity, abundance, and joy.

Symbolism and Tradition:

A Prized Delicacy: The Christmas pudding was the centerpiece of the festive table and a rich dessert made with expensive, imported ingredients like sugar, spices, and dried fruits that were not everyday fare for most people at the time.

Anticipation and Ritual: The making and serving of the pudding was tied to numerous family rituals and superstitions, such as every family member taking a turn to stir and make a wish, or the excitement of finding a hidden silver coin for good luck.

Culminating Moment: The moment the pudding was ceremoniously brought to the table—often doused in brandy and set alight (flambéed) for a dramatic display—was a moment of great excitement and the celebratory culmination of the meal.

Joyful Imagery: Postcards from this era often depicted a jolly and enthusiastic Santa, as this aligned with the overall joyful and abundant themes promoted by Christmas imagery, a stark contrast to some earlier, more austere depictions of Father Christmas. Santa's expression, therefore, reflects the genuine excitement and shared happiness that the pudding represented to families during the Christmas celebration in the early 20th century.

Twas the Night before Christmas: Even in the iconic 1823 poem that helped shape the modern Santa, the description of his "cheeks... like roses" and "nose like a cherry" has been interpreted by some as suggesting a ruddy complexion from drink, though the modern interpretation is that his jolliness comes from the Christmas spirit, not alcohol.

The tradition of leaving food for Santa Claus has ancient origins in European folklore, though the modern American custom of cookies and milk became popular in the 1930s.

Historical Roots - Ancient Norse Mythology: One of the earliest roots of this practice dates back to ancient Norse mythology. During the midwinter Yule festival, children would leave food, such as hay or carrots, for the god Odin's eight-legged horse, Sleipnir, hoping Odin would stop by and leave gifts in return.

Dutch Tradition: The custom also stems from the Dutch celebration of the Feast of St. Nicholas on December 6. Children would leave their shoes out the night before with treats for St. Nicholas and his attendants, who were believed to be traveling long distances, and wake up to find them filled with gifts.

Modern American Tradition - The specific tradition of leaving out cookies and milk for Santa Claus became widespread in the United States during the Great Depression in the 1930s. At a time of economic hardship, parents encouraged this practice as a way to: Teach children about the importance of gratitude and giving to others, even when they had very little themselves. Reinforce a sense of hope and the spirit of generosity during a difficult period. The dairy industry later used marketing campaigns to promote milk as the ideal accompaniment to Santa's cookies, helping to solidify the tradition in American culture.

The Mississauga Civic Centre is the seat of local government of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. The 37,280 square metre complex is a prominent example of postmodern architecture in Canada, finished in 1987 by Jones and Kirkland. It stands at 92 metres or 302 feet. The design was influenced by farmsteads which once occupied much of Mississauga as well as historical features of city centres. The building, for instance, includes a prominent clock tower. It was chosen as the winner of a design competition that included 246 submissions. Mississauga Civic Centre is located in the City Centre near Square One Shopping Centre and is home to the Mississauga City Council. The civic center building is considered one of the most iconic and recognizable buildings and cultural icons of Mississauga city.

Yabba is the name of a number of geographical features in southeast Queensland: a river, a major waterfall, a road, a street, a valley, a range, a mountain and a forest. However, it originates from an aboriginal name for this flower and the deciduous tree that bears the flowers.

A 19th century grazier, Alexander Swanson, took up land on a plateau about 120 kms NNW of Brisbane, and in inquiring of local indigenous men of the Baiyambora clan, what the name of the distinctive and attractive tree was, he was told "Yabba". He thus named his sheepstation, "Yabba". In the early years, there were various spellings of the word such as Yabber, Yapper and Yappa, but as B and P are not differentiated in their language this is understandable. The name became fixed as "Yabba". As Swanson's "Yabba" was sited beside an unnamed river, the name was applied to it and its valley, and the track from "Yabba" to "Imbil", the next station 45 kms downstream, became the Yabba Road. Over the 175 years since Swanson took up his "run", the property has progressively been broken up into several grazing properties and much of his run is now either national park or state forest. As a result of family inheritance "Yabba" has been divided into "Yabba" and "Old Yabba", the latter containing the site of Swanson's original station.

The Yabba tree, Brachychiton discolor, is a unique tree. It is an Australian native that is deciduous shedding its leaves in mid-summer. Further, when in flower during the period when it lacks leaves, the flowers drop from the tree around the end of each day, and each morning a new flush of flowers appear. As it grows in riverine forests, its fallen flowers are often seen floating on the stream. In this photo, the Yabba flowers are floating on a tributary of Yabba Creek.

Excerpt from www.cambridge.ca/en/learn-about/resources/Dickson-Hill-HC...:

Dickson Hill is one of the most unique communities in the City of Cambridge.

Dickson Hill is named for the Honourable William Dickson, a prominent Galt settler who arrived to the area in 1816. Dickson is credited with founding the Village of Galt due to his considerable land holdings and was responsible for much of the commercial development on the west bank of the Grand River.

His son, William Dickson Jr., acquired most of the lands that currently make up the residential area of Dickson Hill. His own residence, located at 16 Byng Avenue was constructed in 1832. The development of the residential component occurred over several decades and by a series of developers. Florence Dickson, niece to William Dickson Jr., and his heir, controlled the development of this area until the 1890’s.

Dickson Hill features an extremely high concentration of significant buildings of various types: residential, institutional, commercial and manufacturing. In addition to the buildings, key elements that define the character of Dickson Hill are:

• Tree-lined streets;

• Distinctive globe street lights; and

• Prominent urban public spaces and landscape features.

Suan Luang Rama IX Park , a new and sizable metropolitan public park, was born out of the aspirations and fervent desire of a group of His Majesty the King's loyal subjects to create and dedicate a park as a token of homage and honor to His Majesty on the occasion of His Sixtieth Birthday Anniversary in the year B.C. 2530 (A.D.1987), with the fullest co-operation of the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority.

Suan Luang Rama IX Park is divided into six areas.

1. Homage to His Majesty- The first and foremost of which is called Uthayan Maharaj (literally, "Garden of the Great King") to symbolize the Sovereign' Grace and Majesty.

2. The Botanical Garden- Area Two is a botanical garden dedicated to the propagation of knowledge, collection of and research on the various types of flora.

3. The Reservoir - Area Three, named Traphang Keo, is a reservoir in line with the flood-prevention project inspired by His Majesty the King, which is the foremost of subsequent water projects.

4. Rommaniya Garden - Area Four comprises an open garden where Thailand's natural heritage, including its mountains and geological features, is represented in miniature for visitors to the Park.

5. The Sanam Rasdara - Area Five, named Sanam Rasdara, is a wide open field intended for use for various types of entertainment of festive occasions. Sanam Rasdara (literlly, "Royal Ground"), fittingly symbolizes the affinity between Luang ("Royal") and Rasdara ("people")

6. The Water Garden- Area Six is a garden in the form of mixed jungle and marshlands, providing the life-sustaining habitat for fish, water- fowl and multifarious aquatic plants.

This scene features a trio of interacting galaxies found in the constellation of Virgo, being some 70-90 million light years away from Earth. The largest galaxy in the group is NGC 5566, which is a barred spiral galaxy stretching nearly 150,000 light years in diameter. Having widely sweeping spiral arms, with dark dusty lanes, these arms are speckled with new star forming regions throughout. The elongated galaxy to the left of NGC 5566 is the heavily distorted NGC5560. You can just see faint dusty interconnections between NGC 5560 and NGC 5566, providing us some clues that these are in fact interacting. The lower blueish galaxy NGC5569 does not appear to be disturbed, and maybe placed slightly in the foreground.

In the darkness of the surrounding space, the speckled background indicates a sea of background objects, all being in the significant distance.

The hotel was built by Alexander Seiler in 1882 which used to be located right next to the Rhone glacier. Due to the shrinking, it is meanwhile 700 meters away.

The hotel appeared among others in James Bond Goldfinger and features the cover-page of 'Accidentally Wes Anderson'.

Due to low business, Hotel Belvédère was sold by the Seiler family in 1984 to the Kanton which later sold it to the Carlen family. The hotel was reopened in 1990 but closed ever since 2015.

This image features a nuthatch clinging to the side of a tree trunk, with its body angled downward. Nuthatches are skilled climbers, often seen creeping headfirst down tree trunks, a unique behavior among birds. They forage for insects, seeds, and nuts in tree bark crevices, using their sharp beaks to pry food out. Nuthatches are territorial, particularly during the breeding season, and will defend their area vigorously.

They use a variety of calls and postures to communicate with intruders or rivals.

Rail Adventure's 43480 emerges from the Great Western booking hall which spans the lines between platforms 2 and 3 at Tyseley at dusk on a chilly Friday evening. The 125 Group in association with RA and Chiltern Railways had organised this tour reminiscent of the Master Cutler in connection with the 125th Anniversary of the opening of London Marylebone. 1Z46 was due a crew change here and with that duly completed the tour departed this delightful station which is packed with period features of the railways of yesteryear.

The market town of Saffron Walden sits in the Uttlesford district of Essex about 15 miles south of Cambridge.

The parish church of St Mary the Virgin dates mainly from the end of the 15th century, the church was struck and damaged by lightning in 1769, following this repairs carried out in the 1790s removed many medieval features. The 183 ft spire was added in 1832 to replace an older lantern tower.

This is my best attempt at panorama to date. It is a stitch of no less than twenty-six photos (I lost count how many photos were taken out from the stitch and cropped out of the final panorama. A quick shot of the Orion Nebula (M42), one of my favourite celestial objects and a really satisfying target. I've been waiting a year for an opportunity to image this nebula again, this time with a polar alignment and guiding to enable much longer exposures than the 15 second subs I took last time and with a lower ISO to reduce noise. The next project with this is to either stitch two shots together or, better still, rotate the camera in order to fit both the Orion Nebula and the nearby Running Man Nebula into one frame.

[Wikipedia] The Orion Nebula (also known as Messier 42, M42, or NGC 1976) is a diffuse nebula situated in the Milky Way, being south of Orion's Belt in the constellation of Orion. It is one of the brightest nebulae, and is visible to the naked eye in the night sky. M42 is located at a distance of 1,344 ± 20 light years and is the closest region of massive star formation to Earth. The M42 nebula is estimated to be 24 light years across. It has a mass of about 2000 times the mass of the Sun. Older texts frequently refer to the Orion Nebula as the Great Nebula in Orion or the Great Orion Nebula.

The Orion Nebula is one of the most scrutinized and photographed objects in the night sky, and is among the most intensely studied celestial features. The nebula has revealed much about the process of how stars and planetary systems are formed from collapsing clouds of gas and dust. Astronomers have directly observed protoplanetary disks, brown dwarfs, intense and turbulent motions of the gas, and the photo-ionizing effects of massive nearby stars in the nebula. [Wikipedia]

My picture features a sheet of New Zealand Christmas wrapping paper. Christmas happens in the middle of Summer, here, so Christmas Day for the majority of us usually happens at the beach with a BBQ and of course we're all dressed in shorts and t-shirt. Families will enjoy their BBQ lunch (or dinner because we're on daylight saving and it doesn't get dark until 9pm) then they'll swim or play cricket on the sand or nearby grass area. You may notice that my wrapping paper features New Zealand Christmassy symbols, such as a BBQ and Jandals (perhaps known as flip-flops or thongs to you?) HMM and have a Merry Christmas 🎅

Machu Picchu (Quechua Machu Pikchu, "Old Mountain"), also called "lost city of the Incas", is a pre-Columbian city well maintained, located on top of a mountain, at 2400 meters altitude, in the Urubamba River valley current Peru. Was built in the fifteenth century, under the orders of Pachacuti.

The place is probably the most typical symbol of the Inca Empire, either due to its unique location and geological features, either due to its late discovery in 1911.

Only about 30% of the city's original construction, the rest was rebuilt. The reconstructed areas are easily recognized by the fit between the stones. The original building consists of larger stones, and fittings with little space between the rocks.

This stunning image by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope features the spiral galaxy NGC 5643 in the constellation of Lupus (the Wolf). Looking this good isn’t easy; 30 different exposures, for a total of nine hours of observation time, together with the high resolution and clarity of Hubble, were needed to produce an image of such high level of detail and beauty.

NGC 5643 is about 60 million light-years away from Earth and has been the host of a recent supernova event (not visible in this latest image). This supernova (2017cbv) was a specific type in which a white dwarf steals so much mass from a companion star that it becomes unstable and explodes. The explosion releases significant amounts of energy and lights up that part of the galaxy.

The observation was proposed by Adam Riess, who (alongside Saul Perlmutter and Brian Schmidt) was awarded a Nobel Prize in physics in 2011 for his contributions to the discovery of the accelerating expansion of the universe.

The Tower of Hercules has served as a lighthouse and landmark at the entrance of La Coruña harbour in north-western Spain since the late 1st century A.D. when the Romans built the Farum Brigantium. The Tower, built on a 57 metre high rock, rises a further 55 metres, of which 34 metres correspond to the Roman masonry and 21 meters to the restoration directed by architect Eustaquio Giannini in the 18th century, who augmented the Roman core with two octagonal forms. Immediately adjacent to the base of the Tower, is a small rectangular Roman building. The site also features a sculpture park, the Monte dos Bicos rock carvings from the Iron Age and a Muslim cemetery. The Roman foundations of the building were revealed in excavations conducted in the 1990s. Many legends from the Middle Ages to the 19th century surround the Tower of Hercules, which is unique as it is the only lighthouse of Greco-Roman antiquity to have retained a measure of structural integrity and functional continuity.

Marina Bay Sands features three 55-story hotel towers which were topped out in July 2009. The three towers are connected by a 1 hectare sky terrace on the roof, named Sands SkyPark.

In front of the three towers include a Theatre Block, a Convention and Exhibition Facilities Block, as well as the Casino Block, which have up to 1000 gaming tables and 1400 slot machines.

The SkyPark is home to the world's longest elevated swimming pool, with a 146-metre (478 ft) vanishing edge, perched 191 metres above the ground. The pools are made up of 422,000 pounds of stainless steel and can hold 376,500 gallons (1424 cubic metres) of water. The SkyPark also boasts rooftop restaurants The Club facilities, lush gardens, hundreds of trees and plants, and a public observatory deck on the cantilever with 360-degree views of the Singapore skyline.

There are four movement joints beneath the main pools, designed to help them withstand the natural motion of the towers, and each joint has a unique range of motion. The total range of motion is 500 millimetres (19.68 inches). In addition to wind, the hotel towers are also subject to settlement in the earth over time, so engineers built and installed custom jack legs to allow for future adjustment at more than 500 points beneath the pool system. This jacking system is important primarily to ensure the infinity edge of the pool continues to function properly.

The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands also boasts close to 1,000,000 square feet (93,000 m2) of retail space with over 300 stores and F&B outlets, including numerous luxury duplexes for boutiques such as Ralph Lauren, Chanel, Cartier and Prada. Other luxury stores include Gucci, Hermès, Emporio Armani, Chopard, REDValentino, Dior, Dunhill, Vertu, Miu Miu, Saint Laurent Paris, Salvatore Ferragamo, Montblanc, Blancpain, an Hermès Watch Boutique, and Herve Leger.

A canal runs through the length of the Shoppes, in the same style as the Venetian in Las Vegas. Sampan rides on the canal are available for guests and shoppers at the shopping mall, similar to the gondola rides available in the Venetian. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marina_Bay_Sands

The Festival of Nations is an annual multi-cultural celebration held in Tower Grove Park in St. Louis, Missouri. The Festival is produced by the International Institute of St. Louis, which was founded in 1919 to provide help to immigrants and their families and to promote ethnic diversity as a cultural and economic strength. The Festival of Nations debuted in 1934 and currently features 70 stage performances, 40+ food booths, and 30+ gift booths representing numerous nations across the word. The Festival is attended by over 125,000 people over two days.

I have been to several of these Festivals over the years, and the 2017 Festival was the best yet. The individual and group performers were spectacular, and the organization and handling of the event is top-notch. These photos are of some of the many, many performers who worked so hard for this event.
