This was the third day we photographed the PL before it left the bay. We got fantastic views as he came towards us with the aid of some guy that pulled over to the side of the road and scared it to us. This loon favored this cove area where it sought refuge with the Common Loon. This particular spot stays rather calm when the winds are howling. Glad I got the show of the deep purple throat. Getting the light on that throat and angle was challenging. In the end I finally got an acceptable shot. Hope you enjoy it :)
Over the past decade one of the common advices given to aspiring photographers is to explore various of photographic themes from which they may start developing their own style. Style, so I believe, is first and foremost the reflection of the photographer’s own personality combined with his/her favored theme/subject and her preferred technique(s) of execution. It’s good advise even though slightly inadequate.
I have realized this couple of months ago when my work was criticized as “mirroring the reality”. Indeed, simply just. Behind the bland words and the euphemistic praises the critique is not very pleasant to read, however it was probably one of the most insightful critique I ever received. It hallowed me to deepen the engagement with my subjects, not in order to capture photographs but to make pictures and even tableaux.

Ruins of Kumurdo Cathedral stand on the background of ill-favored and barren landscape of Javakheti plateau, in a distance of 12 km from Akhalkalaki. The extensive inscription curved on the stone slab that fortunately preserved up to now tells that the threshold of the cathedral was placed in May, 964 AD. According to that inscription the Bishop of Kumurdo John has initiated church construction. Name of an architect was Sacotsari. After reconsideration of the six-apse design five-apse configuration of the church was obtained, instead of being situated radial. Western rectangular arm of the church is three-nave, with internal narthex and three sided gallery arranged in its western end. External layout of the church is cross-shaped; in response to three-partite sanctuary two triangular niches are arranged on western façade, coupled with two others, one at each lateral façade. A porch-chapel is erected in front of the main entrance — the eastern one, with a tiny shrine arranged in the thickness of the load-bearing wall. Despite of the relative simplification of the design Sakotsari has managed to preserve all integral elements of the six-apse construction and provide sufficient dynamics through trapezoidal bemas running along the lateral apses and column-like protrusions that support sub-dome sagittal arches. All the aforementioned provides general elevation of the internal space and creates strong impression of motion and charge of life.
All elements of decoration – window headers and framings adorned with light, open-work-type fretwork, a complex, large frame of the sanctuary window, cornices decorated with different images are scattered over the vast surfaces of the building exterior, faced with most accurately hewn stones. Adornment is so perfect, clear and clean that they may be perceived as the embroidery instructed on the metal surfaces. Several risings still well noticeable on eastern sub-dome tromps include images of the church construction donors – Queen Gurandukht, her brother King Leon of Abkhazs and her spouse – King Gurgen of Georgians. All of those images coupled with those incorporated in the sanctuary window decoration are plain and tabular, while the heads or possibly the faces of archangels placed in the niches and over the southern porch, on the contrary, are rounded and volumetric. Motion is sensible even in symmetrical elements – inscription over the western façade is slanted northwards, interlocked tromp-like spaces are arranged on the corners of the church arm exteriors.
Even today, with missing dome and western arm the monument is perhaps as gorgeous and splendid as it was upon the completion of its construction. The temple has got several sections that were added to its body at later times the most important of which is southern porch constructed along the western arm. This attachment of the first of XI c was initiated by Queen Marry of Georgia.
All preserved fragments of wall painting, for instance within the sanctuary are relatively younger then the building itself. It seems, frescoes of the north-western apse were performed sometime in XIII c. Western porch of the cathedral bears footprints of XVI c refurbishment. Two X c steles are erected close to the temple.

This building of the Primitive Baptist Church dates from 1887, when it replaced the 1827 log building that had served since the church's establishment. Initially, the church was Cades Cove Baptist Church, but a rift developed within the membership that led to the expulsion of those favoring missionary work (including the pastor) and the 1841 creation of Missionary Baptist Church; the original church then adopted the name Primitive Baptist Church. Services were not held during the American Civil War; most members favored the Union while Confederate sympathies ran high in Cades Cove [information from Cades Cove Tour booklet available at park visitor centers, and from Cades Cove Loop Road Auto Tour on line]. I didn't study the grave stones, but noticed a grave as recent as 2009. Cades Cove Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977 (77000111); contributing properties include three churches, Cable Mill, and various cabins and farms.

She was built for Mrs Barbara McKee Henry, grand-daughter of Cornelius Vanderbilt II. The family enjoyed cruises to Cuba to visit Ernest Hemingway and to the Galapagos islands. Acquired by the US Navy in 1942 and renamed USS Saluda (IX 87). She was in service of the US Navy until 1974 in various areas such as sonar and oceanographic work. The gaff-rigged cutter looks to be a Bristol type of Pilot Cutter design. In the 1800’s. such boats were used to guide ships into ports. This design was favored because they were fast, sailed well to windward, could handle rough weather and could be sailed by a small crew. Those features are attractive today for sailing about the Salish Sea (Puget Sound). Taken at Port Townsend's 2011 Wooden Boat Festival

So you'll KNOW, and not think you're to bad for God to love. The Christian LIFE isn't about how good WE are, because NONE of us are! It's about how GOOD JESUS IS! Because JESUS LOVES US, so much he died in our place and took the punishment for all of our sins on himself. The wages of sin is DEATH, and Jesus took the death WE so richly deserved for us and died in our place. The good news is, there's no more punishment for sin left. WE, you and I were all born forgive as a result of the crucifixion of God himself on the cross that took away the sins of the whole world. All we have to do is believe it, and put your Faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ. That my friends is REAL UNCONDITIONAL LOVE! YOU ARE LOVED. ❤️ ✝️ ❤️

The orange carrot was created by the Dutch growers. There is pictorial evidence that the orange carrot existed at least in 512, but it is probable that it was not a stable variety until the Dutch bred the cultivar termed the "Long Orange" at the end of 17th century - beginning of the 18th century. Some claim that the Dutch created the orange carrots to honor the Dutch flag at the time and William of Orange, but other authorities argue these claims lack convincing evidence and it is possible that the orange carrot was favored by the Europeans because it does not brown the soups and stews as the purple carrot does and, as such, was more visually attractive
This was the preferred perch of a female Violet-tailed Sylph near a feeder at Balcón Tumpiki but unfortunately for her, it was also favored by several honey bees that seemed to take pleasure in chasing her away. In the Mindo precinct of northwest Ecuador.
Orchis purpurea (Orchidaceae) 115 25
Orchis purpurea was first described by Hudson from the county of Kent (England) in 1762 and its name refers to the purple coloration of the inflorescence. It has long been known commonly as the Lady Orchid, this being a reference to the individual flowers resemblance to the flowing skirts of the countrywomen of the time. It should be remembered however that despite this feminine allusion, an appendage similar to that of Orchis anthropophra (the Man Orchid) is visible beneath the skirt !
This is one of Europe's commoner Orchis with a range extending from the south of England, across central and southern Europe into Russia. It can also be found in parts of north Africa. Orchis purpurea is one of the tallest and most robust of the continents orchids which in exceptional cases can reach nearly a meter in height and produce multiple stems from a massive rosette of broadly lanceolate, shiny leaves. It is also known to form huge colonies in its favored locations.
Orchis purpurea is essentially a species that exhibits little significant variation in stature or form but lip patterns and coloration can differ, with the named variety albflora a frequently encountered example. This variety has an unmarked pure white lip with a light green hood that may be found throughout the range of the type species.
It is strictly a species of alkaline soils and favours a position in slightly shaded locations such as hedgerows, verges and light woodland. Hybridisation is common and particularly with the similar Orchis militaris with which it frequently occurs. Intermediates do however seem to appear in relative isolation and rarely form the swarms that can be common within the Serapias group.

Another shot taken much earlier than the previous post in brighter soft light. This was an interesting branch that he also favored from the tree. I think I sat in my car in this one. Click for large view. You can see some small flies in it's beak.
Another fabulous time out "running the roads" with Anita! Despite going up into the Shenandoah National Park and riding along Skyline Drive where we saw a few signs asking us Not to feed the wildlife.... we didn't see Any wildlife at all! Well, the butt end of a deer heading into the brush. Not a rabbit, not a bear not even a mouse! LOL I see more action looking out my windows than we saw up there. Still the views as usual were gorgeous and the temperature up there is always ten degrees cooler so that was nice. We ended up in Luray at our highly favored Hawksbill Greenway. Always see some type of bird here! :)
During my June trip, I had a short phone conversation with my friend and fellow photographer Eugene Louie and we were very surprised to discover that we were both planning to shoot near Lone Pine, CA the next night. Of course, we immediately decided to do the shooting together.
After meeting in the afternoon, we had an early dinner and, while discussing our plans over a burger, we discovered that we favored two totally different places for our night together.
After checking our planning apps, we agreed that shooting at both spots was possible during the next night, as the MW would be nicely placed over the arch I desperately wanted to shoot, while the late night vertical MW would nicely fit Eugenes preferred scene.
This is the result I got at "my" arch. We arrived there shortly after sunset and, while talking about how to set up the low level lighting, I noticed that Eugene was quite a perfectionist about it. We decided to light the scene with 3 LED panels and I let Eugene play with the lights. He kept shuffling them almost until the end of our shooting and, although he never was totally happy with his setup, I think he did an excellent job lighting the scene.

So you'll KNOW, and not think you're to bad for God to love. The Christian LIFE isn't about how good WE are, because NONE of us are! It's about how GOOD JESUS IS! Because JESUS LOVES US, so much he died in our place and took the punishment for all of our sins on himself. The wages of sin is DEATH, and Jesus took the death WE so richly deserved for us and died in our place. The good news is, there's no more punishment for sin left. WE, you and I were all born forgive as a result of the crucifixion of God himself on the cross that took away the sins of the whole world. All we have to do is believe it, and put your Faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ. That my friends is REAL UNCONDITIONAL LOVE! YOU ARE LOVED. ❤️ ✝️ ❤️

One of my favorite diving ducks is the ring-necked duck, though my feeble brain always wants to call them ring-billed ducks, as the ring on the bill is much more pronounced than the one on the neck. This view shows the neck ring well as the transition from purple iridescence on the head to black on the neck.
This drake was part of a group feeding at the edge of a melting ice platform, which I've observed many times before, and seems to be a favored spot to hunt for food. I'm not sure why this is so- perhaps the pond invertebrates use the ice for protection and are more abundant under ice cover.
Three musk oxen run across the snow covered tundra of Prudhoe Bay Alaska. The musk ox live comfortably in one of the harshest climates on earth, braving temperatures to -50f with wind chills exceeding -100f.

This Bird is way out of its normal area.
A gray-headed bird with bright yellow underparts and a pale gray-green back. It has a whitish throat and dark gray-brown wings and tail.
Forages by catching large flying insects on the wing, sallying out from a favored perch (often a telephone line) and returning to it to consume the prey. Also feeds on fruits, particularly during cooler weather. Perches conspicuously and when nesting flies out to confront many sorts of birds that come too close to the nest.

A UP caboose hangs out with Pana Tower in downtown Pana, Illinois. Pana Tower guarded the crossing of the Big Four, B&O, and the ICRR, all of which are now gone from this scene, as well as UP's former C&EI/MP Villa Grove Sub which is still active, and is just out of sight to the right and behind the tower. The C&EI utilized the Big Four trackage from here to Lenox Tower near East St. Louis. Once PC/Conrail chose the PRR as the favored route for this end of their St. Louis Line, and downgraded this portion of the Big Four, the western end, was sold to then Mo-Pac.
I still recall being allowed to sit at, and possibly line up signals on the massive CTC machine for the Big Four's line at Desk A in Conrail's Southwest Division Dispatcher's Office in Indianapolis. The CTC machine later went to Mo-Pac with the sale of the line.

A juvenile Sharp-shinned Hawk blending into the environment, hoping not to be spotted by the other bird species it preys upon.
I was amazed how this little hawk maneuvered on wing so quickly and easily through the thick brush. At the time, I just happened to have my camera on me, as I was taking pics of Hummingbirds and other small birds I could find.
The Sharp-shinned Hawk is the smallest of North America's bird-hunting Accipter hawks. It is also the most migratory, breeding north to treeline in Alaska and Canada and wintering south to Panama. It is during migration that the Sharp-shin is most likely to be seen in numbers, with dozens or even hundreds passing at some favored points on the coastlines, lake shores, and mountain ridges. At other season the hawks lurk in the woods, ambushing songbirds and generally staying out of sight like the one pictured.
The Sharp-shinned Hawk feeds on mostly small birds about sparrow size and up to robin size and even Quail from time to time. They also eat small numbers of rodents, bats, lizards, squirrels, frogs, snakes and large insects.

There are many hotels, hostel, home stay on the slopes of these mountains in this Cingjing area in Nantou County.
Stay on the second floor (this view) of the Fendan home stay and was favored with a breathtaking view from the room bed.
After a long fun day that started off photographing GM&O F-units and following the GM&O covered wagons all the way to Springfield we ended our trip at stopped back off at the GM&O Bloomington diesel facility with long time friends Steve Smedley ,Chris Rummary and Gary Powell we set up night shots with our favored covered F-units
While on vacation in Primiero last summer I could see the effects of 2 phenomena which hit the forests of the Central-Eastern Italy. Apparently independent, in fact they’re sadly connected by the changing climatic conditions.
One is the devastation brought by an unprecedented storm, later named Vaia, in 2018 - on a very wide region, several thousands of trees have been eradicated and whole forests destroyed.
The other is the incisive action of the spruce bark beetle – a bug that, favored by the last couple of hot and dry years, is attacking many of the weakened trees that survived the Vaia storm, drying them up and thus worsening the already critical status of our forests.
This latter hit hard on the local communities, who were starting remediation programs after Vaia. It’ll take further efforts to find sustainable solutions, since many aspects in their daily life are influenced by the state of health of their forests.

The Old Main, also known as the Livingston C. Lord Administration Building, is the oldest building at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois. Construction on the building began in 1896 and was completed in 1899.
Architect George H. Miller designed the building, which has a medieval style resembling a castle. The building features a central tower, multiple turrets, and a crenellated roof line. It is one of five medieval buildings built at Illinois' public universities under Illinois Governor John Peter Altgeld's administrations; the buildings are collectively known as Altgeld's castles.
Altgeld was a German native who favored Gothic Revival architecture. The governor had a great liking for medieval castles and insisted new state construction during his term in office be inspired by them. Other Altgeld castles can be found at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Northern Illinois University at DeKalb, and Illinois State University at Normal. EIU and ISU are the only schools where the "castle" is not named after Governor Altgeld.
The Old Main originally housed all of the offices and classrooms for Eastern Illinois, its library, auditorium, and gymnasium. It was the only building on campus until 1909, when Pemberton Hall opened. The building is now used mainly as an administrative building, though it still contains some classrooms.
The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.

So you'll KNOW, and not think you're to bad for God to love. The Christian LIFE isn't about how good WE are, because NONE of us are! It's about how GOOD JESUS IS! Because JESUS LOVES US, so much he died in our place and took the punishment for all of our sins on himself. The wages of sin is DEATH, and Jesus took the death WE so richly deserved for us and died in our place. The good news is, there's no more punishment for sin left. WE, you and I were all born forgive as a result of the crucifixion of God himself on the cross that took away the sins of the whole world. All we have to do is believe it, and put your Faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ. That my friends is REAL UNCONDITIONAL LOVE! YOU ARE LOVED. ❤️ ✝️ ❤️

A Rambler sits at the end of a field as the sun seeks to penetrate a late spring fog. In my initial year of college I secured my first non-farm job working as a go-fer boy for a Rambler-Studebaker dealer in southwestern Minnesota. During the 60s, the Rambler was a family favored car and he sold a lot of them after I had cleaned them up. Today, few people of younger generations could tell you what a Rambler was other than assuming it had something to do with Nat King Cole and a rose.
Oxalis acetosella (Oxalidaceae) 080 24
Oxalis acetosella is a useful indicator in establishing the age of woodland. It is widespread, but localised and can only be found in ancient and undisturbed locations. This plant is found throughout northern and central European countries.
Damp, shady places, beside streams are favored by this delicate spring flower, which is very tolerant of acid soils. At night, not only do Oxalis acetosella flowers close but the leaves also fold up, rather like a fan.

PINK WILD DESERT FLOWERS growing in PETRA.
In the background appears the beautiful Nabateaen Amphitheater carved right from the mountain rock. It's a little different from the other ancient theaters in Jordan because of its (grand) setting and the pinkish-red color. It was surrounded by many small Nabataean tombs, affirming that it was a part of Petra. The panoramic views of this place from the trek to the Treasury viewpoint are also spectacular.

A Japanese tansu in our bedroom. A very large piece of furniture that comes apart easily into its individual components. Favored by the Japanese as their ancient homes were prone to fires and this storage device allowed for rapid movement of one's belongings. This piece is partially original and has been restored.

The water is heavily polluted by algae. The ducks don't seem to like that either, because they rarely go into the water and prefer to sit on the broken branch.
The warm and humid weather of the last few weeks favored the algae growth - not good for the animals living in the water.

The black-and-white ruffed lemur (Varecia variegata) is a critically endangered species of ruffed lemur, one of two which are endemic to the island of Madagascar. Despite having a larger range than the red ruffed lemur, it has a much smaller population that is spread out, living in lower population densities and reproductively isolated. It also has less coverage and protection in large national parks than the red ruffed lemur.
Together with the red ruffed lemur, they are the largest extant members of the family Lemuridae, ranging in length from 100 to 120 cm (3.3 to 3.9 ft) and weighing between 3.1 and 4.1 kg (6.8 and 9.0 lb).
They are arboreal, spending most of their time in the high canopy of the seasonal rainforests on the eastern side of the island. They are also diurnal, active exclusively in daylight hours.
Quadrupedal locomotion is preferred in the trees and on the ground, and suspensory behavior is seen during feeding. As the most frugivorous of lemurs, the diet consists mainly of fruit, although nectar and flowers are also favored, followed by leaves and some seeds.
The black-and-white ruffed lemur has a complex social structure and is known for its loud, raucous calls. It is unusual in that it exhibits several reproductive traits typically found in small, nocturnal lemurs, such as a short gestation period, large litters and rapid maturation.
