Hurricane Fault
You are looking at the steep edge of the Colorado Plateau where the Hurricaine Fault has pushed up the land several thousand feet. The uplift along the fault has exagerated the forcesof eroision, directly contrbuting to the steep walls of Zion Canyon and Kolob Canyons.
Fault-block scenery is far from stable. Much of the uplift here took place gradually over millions of years, but slippage along the fault is sudden and violent (diagram at right). As recently as 1992, an earthquake occured jus six miles from St. George. The Hurricaine Fault zone remains active.

My fault really. Finngr is wonderful - but made simply so kids can enjoy - all drawings re horizontal by default and no rotate option. I must implore the programmer to make a pro edition !?!
The 90-mile long San Gabriel Fault forms the northern boundary of Placerita Canyon. Here is the fault scarp near Walker Ranch.
As far as I can see all these shots are uneven in focus/out of focus, this is due to me Dropping the camera last summer, probably the last ones I will shoot with the camera

Some professors from Granada university were on hand and let us see their 3D aerial photos of the fault zone, which during our visit was swarming with families and children. Looks a great annual initiative!
