The first two miles of the trail follows Sibley Creek, which traces roughly a fault line between a dark slate-like metamporphic rock with lots of interesting streaks and inclusions (in the middle distance, center of the photo) and a light-colored granite (in the foreground).

Running through our two groups is the Alpine Fault, which cuts through the South Island and marks the contact of the Australian plate and the Pacific plate. Clearly the Pacific plate is the more fun loving plate and the Australian plate is a bunch of losers.

The concrete wall we're on was erected in the hopes of providing a visual record of any displacement, but amusingly movement seems to be taken up by a splay called the Hope Fault causing the Alpine Fault in this area to be motionless.
