This is a photograph from the 60th Anniversary Commerative Half Marathon for Tullamore Harriers AC which was held on Saturday 31st August 2013 in Tullamore, Co. Offaly, Ireland at 12:00. This was a really great event and there couldn't be any fault found with any aspect of the race. There were stewarts all along the route, 3 drink stations with bottled water, superb facilities, and great after-race refreshments. The stewards along the route provided great encouragement to all of the runners. Tullamore Harriers and the local community really worked together to make this is a wonderful event.

This race celebrates the 60th Anniversary (a Diamond Anniversary) of the foundation of Tullamore Harriers AC. The club was formed in the town in November 1953. However, it was almost 1979 before facilities close to what we see today open in the present day site. Over 50 provincial and national athletics meetings are held at Tullamore Harriers every year. The facilities available combined with it's central geographical location joing routes from North, South, East, and West make it a very attractive venue. The race today brings competitive national road racing back to The Harriers. In the past there was the famous Quinnlan Cup
Festival of Races (see a link below for some nostalgia) which was one of Ireland's Blue Ribband events. Today, the facilities at Tullamore Harriers are the envy of many athletics clubs in Ireland. The facilities provided by Tullamore make it one of the premier venues for local and national level athletics in Ireland. There is an Olympic standard tartan track, a fully equipped gym, changing facilities, press and media facilities, meeting room spaces, etc. The club also provides a social center and niteclub which makes "The Harriers" a very well known on the local social scene. Esssentially, the town of Tullamore would be a different place if it weren't for the presence of Tullamore Harriers AC.
Overall Race Summary
Participants: There was about 500 participants of runners, joggers, and walkers.
Weather: The midday start seen warm pleasant conditions for running. The layout of the course meant that there was a stiff breeze into the face of competitors for the first few miles. When the race turned around to return to Tullamore the wind was more favourable to runners.
Course: The race starts on the Charleville Road just outside the entrance to Tullamore Harriers. The race proceeds south along the R421 and onto the N52 before taking a route onto local back roads. The race then completes a large rural road route before it joins to the R421 again and the final 1.5 miles are the same as the first mile of the race. The runners enter tullamore stadium and complete one lap of the tartan track before the finish line. The course is challenging in places with some undulations along the route. But overall it is fair course.

Refreshments: There was a very impressive selection of refreshments including sandwiches, cakes, home-made breads, etc in the Harriers clubhouse afterwards. People were able to enjoy their post race refreshments outside in the warm pleasant sunshine.

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?
As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. This being a sacred religious site the fitting of the stones was unbelievably precise as seen from the fit between individual stones.
Stones in the most handsome buildings throughout the Inca Empire used no mortar. These stones were cut so precisely, and wedged so closely together, that a credit card cannot be inserted between them. Aside from the obvious aesthetic benefits of this building style, there are engineering advantages. Peru is a seismically unstable country—both Lima and Cusco have been leveled by earthquakes—and Machu Picchu itself was constructed atop two fault lines. When an earthquake occurs, the stones in an Inca building are said to “dance;” that is, they bounce through the tremors and then fall back into place. Without this building method, many of the best known buildings at Machu Picchu would have collapsed long ago.
These little cracks in the bark of a massive tree are like the daily stresses in our lives. Keep them in perspective.

Faults are quite common in orogenic belts. Faults are defined as fractures in rocks along which differential displacement has occurred. Dip-slip faults are those involving movement of rocks in non-horizontal directions. Strike-slip faults involve movement of rocks in horizontal directions.
The two common types of dip-slip faults are normal faults and reverse faults. Normal faults form by extensional stress. Reverse faults form by compressional stress.

No doubt about the location of the fault here. Unfortunately the fault doesn't look like much here.
Limestone with fault slickenlines from the Mississippian of Ohio, USA.
The Maxville Limestone is the only Middle to Late Mississippian-aged stratigraphic unit in Ohio. Its outcrop belt is not extensive - it principally occurs in Muskingum County and Perry County in eastern and southeastern Ohio. The Maxville Formation can also be found as cobbles and pebbles in the basal Sharon Formation (Lower Pennsylvanian), which disconformably overlies Ohio's Mississippian rocks. Paleohills, or erosional outliers, of Maxville Limestone have also been identified.
Shown here is a lithologic sample from the Maxville Limestone at a quarry in western Muskingum County, Ohio. The quarry targets Maxville Limestone and crushes it for use as road gravel, fill, rip-rap, and erosion-control blocks. The Maxville here is an erosional outlier that is described in Stout (1918).
The exposed stratigraphy at this quarry includes basal Pennsylvanian sedimentary rocks disconformably overlying Mississippian Maxville Limestone:
1) ~4 to 5 feet of fissile black shale with smooth, slightly shiny concretions (paleopebbles?)
2) Sharon Conglomerate - quartz-pebble conglomerate
3) Black shale
4) Gray, non-fissile claystone with lumpy iron oxide concretions
5) Unconformity with minor paleotopography
6) Maxville Limestone - mostly lime mudstone (micritic limestone) with occasional lenses or pockets of fossil shell hash; some thin shale interbeds; one small apparent sandstone lens (= relatively thin, gray, clay-rich interval with sandy-silty grains); occasional coarsely-crystalline/coarse-grained limestone intervals with finely laminated argillaceous limestone; some slickenlined surfaces seen in the incompetent clay-rich intervals. Observed fossils include brachiopods (Composita subquadrata atrypids), bivalves, gastropods (Straparollus planodorsatus and Bellerophon sublaevis), and crinoids (even calyx material). Straparollus gastropods are common in the argillaceous intervals - they are compacted and compressed. One Straparollus fossil snail was seen with a healed shell fracture/break.
Notable Pennsylvanian float samples in the section: a Lepidodendron tree trunk with nice, diamond-shaped leaf scars and a coarse-grained rip-up clast breccia.
The lines/ridges on the sample seen here are fault slickenlines. The surface facing the viewer is a minor fault. Slickenlines indicate the direction of fault movement.
Stratigraphy: Maxville Limestone, Meramecian to Chesterian, Middle to Upper Mississippian
Locality: Pleasant Valley Limestone Quarry (spoils pile at the southwestern end of the quarry), southwest of Dillon Lake, Hopewell Township, western Muskingum County, eastern Ohio, USA (~vicinity of 39° 58' 49.64" North latitude, 82° 08' 05.74" West longitude)

An old alignment of Mexico Federal Highway 2. This gap was caused by the Mexicali earthquake in April, the strongest earthquake in Southern California in the last 20 years.
This crack also happened on the current alignment, about 100 feet behind me when I took this picture. This was repaired in a few days (as it is the main route between Tijuana and Mexicali). However, since the old alignment has not been open to traffic for a long time, the crack remains.
This an original Fichtel & Sachs service chart for an AUTOMATIC hub, not the hub featured in this set of Torpedo Duomatic photos. However, most of the parts are identical to the Duomatic and the chart is very useful for working on one.
The main difference is that the Duomatic is missing parts 16 & 17 from the Automatic schematic.
