There is a beach in Narragansett, Rhode Island with a long rock jetty that stretches out a full mile from the vast shore into an even greater ocean. I wanted to get a particular shot looking towards the beach at the tip of this outcropping of massive stones. My interest in night photography takes me places I once would never think of going with only stars to light the way, so naturally I set out at sunset. The further out I went the slicker and further apart the rocks became. Carefully I maneuvered down the side of the jetty for a lower angle closer to the water and its crashing waves which left behind even smoother surfaces on the already slippery stones. I reached the lowest rock I could and got my shots, being sure to take my time for it was a long treacherous walk, and I knew the journey back up would be even more difficult. It was completely dark and too hard to tell the difference between dry stones and those coated in slimy growths from the ocean. The caution I had for my equipment hindered me greatly, and whenever I reached a gap too difficult to traverse I would pause, and while looking for another route terrible thoughts of a misplaced step filled the back of my mind.
Every movement had to be perfect. A single misstep could lead to any number of poor outcomes, and the camera equipment acted as much as an encumbrance as it did encouragement to take my time and focus. With great effort and little injury I reached higher rocks away from the sea spray and crashing waves which threatened every moment of my endeavors at the base of that stretched and crooked jetty.
As long as there is a camera in my hands I know I’ll find myself in similar and perhaps worse situations, and until I can no longer squeeze that shutter button in the exuberance of a successful expedition, It will always be worth it.
