I originally bought the first book for my other half to read, he said I would really enjoy it, which I did, so for Xmas I was bought book 2. As soon as it was finished I rushed out to buy book 3.

Auralia's Colors by Jeffrey Overstreet.
It is marked as Fiction / Fantasy, but I think I found it in the Young Adult section.
I am slightly past one third of the book.
Auralia in a place where colors are banned,
only to be used when rationed out.
However, she can craft colors.
Do not worry.. I have not given away much more than what you could not learn by reading the back cover. Reading the book at this time seems to make sense, since I have rediscovered colors through the eye/lens of my camera.

The Chronicles of Crispin Lipton book two: Wrath of the Wendigo is available online! Honestly I recommend skipping book one and going straight to book two. It’s more exciting, better written, and is just all around way better.

The books of Philip Pullman's trilogy (the US title of Northern Lights is The Golden Compass, thus the title of the forthcoming film.
This is the prequel to the Black Magician trilogy and whilst very enjoyable it was a little predictable but I expected that. It was set further back into the past than I actually hoped for but gave a really good background to the series.
Whilst it's not the best book out there, if you enjoyed her trilogy then I think you will enjoy this as it was a very easy quick read.
