We entered the house as commanded by the Oracle. Before us stood an empty room with a single table. On the table lay an ancient worn book. Fire seemed to be burning within it. We stepped forward. I reached down and opened the book. We held our breath, wondering what was going to happen next and wondered why things on this journey always came back to sacred books.

I opened the ancient book. Kenzie and I waited. The page appeared to be blank. We were starting to get a little worried when suddenly a stairway descended from the pages at the top of the book. At the top was our home. We quickly climbed the staircase. The stairway disappeared behind us as we climbed. It wasn't until we were safely on our front porch that I looked backwards. All I saw was the quiet street on which we lived.

We swung open the heavy oak doors and stepped into a paneled reading room. Books lined the walls from floor to ceiling. In the center of the room was a table on which rested two large bound books. The voice we heard in the outer chamber appeared again like some omniscient narrator, "The Book of Sacred Adventures lies upon the table. Open the book. The book has psychic properties and will sense your desired adventure and thus will only open to one specific page. Your adventure awaits you there."

I stepped forward and opened the book. An incredible sight emerged before us.

"That is the Ruby Waterfall," said the voice. "Good luck on your journey."

"But how do we know where to find it?" I asked

"Behold the other book lying next to the Book of Sacred Adventures. It is the Book of Stairways. Open it and the beginning of your journey will be revealed."

I had not noticed the second book but there it was. I stepped forward and opened it. Before us opened a wide staircase that looked to lead into a wonderland of red.

"You must cross the Crimson Desert to the Sultan's palace. There you will find the guidance you need to continue your journey. Take passage with the caravans. It is safer. And be advised that if you choose to proceed, you cannot return this way. You must find your own way home." said the omniscient voice.

We'd come too far turn back now. So up the stairs we went to see what awaited us.

Ninth book in the Fantasy Books Series

John W. Campbell’s classic “Who Goes There?” was the basis of the Howard Hawks’ movie “The Thing From Another World” in 1951. The story is about an Antarctic research camp that discovers and thaws the ancient, frozen body of a crash-landed alien. The creature revives with terrifying results. Paranoia ensues as a band of frightened men work to destroy the menace.

This is the first of 12 in the Fantasy Book series by Cherry Tree.

Author L R Lam with an advance copy of her forthcoming "sexy dragon" novel, Dragonfall, which is coming out in May (she was swinging by to drop us off an advance proof copy to read - in the book trade this is known as an author doing a "proof drop". Very much looking forward to reading this - and in good timing it will be published just before our next Cymera Festival, Edinburgh's literary fest of science fiction, fantasy, horror and YA books, in June.

“Ralph 124C41+: Thrilling Adventures in the year 2660” by Hugo Gernsback.

An early science fiction novel, written as a twelve-part serial in Modern Electrics magazine, which Gernsback edited, beginning in April 1911. It was compiled into novel/book form in 1925. While it pioneered many ideas found in later science fiction, it has been critically panned for its "inept writing." Some successful predictions from this novel include television (and channel surfing), remote-control power transmission, the videophone, transcontinental air service, solar energy in practical use, sound movies, synthetic milk and foods, artificial cloth, voiceprinting, tape recorders, and spaceflight. It also contains "...the first accurate description of radar, complete with diagram...", according to Arthur C. Clarke in his "non-genre" novel “Glide Path” (1963). [Source: Wikipedia]

Seventh book in the Cherry Tree Fantasy Books Series

"His heart didn't care. It was young, far younger really than his head, and drunk on the promise of his own success."

From today's lunchtime reading, Kiwi author H.G. Parry's rather excellent alt-history fantasy A Radical Act of Free Magic (sequel to A Declaration of the Rights of Magicians), set in a slightly different version of our history, with Pitt and Wilberforce in Britain trying to repeal the slavery laws, Louverture in Haiti leading the slave rebellion and Robespierre and the French Revolution then the rise of Napoleon, but with magic added into the real history.

The line that so caught my attention is about a young Napoleon embarking for the Egyptian campaign. The book is out later this month.

“The Kid From Mars” by Oscar J. Friend

Second book in the Fantasy Books Series

“A lighter-than-air time-passer having to do with the arrival from Mars of Llamkin, assigned to bring back information on humor to save his dying race. His spaceship is hunted by traitors; he is believed to be a part of a publicity stunt; he creates scenes in a night club, in a court; he falls in love with a screen star; and, unable to convince anyone that he is a Martian, kidnaps the President of the United States, a sports reporter, rival industrialists, and a cinemactress. Back on Mars, savants examine them and find laughter when they realize Llamkin has fallen in love with an earth woman. As a product of science- fiction this is not as worthy of the new status as others.” -- Kirkus Review

Tenth book in the Fantasy Book Series

After a long run as a science fiction writer, L. Ron Hubbard founded the Church of Scientology in 1953.

From the back cover:

TYPEWRITER IN THE SKY and FEAR, reputed to be two of the finest examples of modern science fiction, are together here in one volume! Coming from the pen of that top-flight American author, L. Ron Hubbard, the reader is assured of first-class writing and ingenious and original plots.

TYPEWRITER IN THE SKY is a story within a story. Not only is the reader taken back to the swashbuckling, pirate days of the Spanish Main, but he soon becomes aware that the leading character of the young handsome sea captain is, in reality, the friend of an author, who deliberately traps him within the colourful pages of his romantic drama, which he is writing desperately against time. The sea captain becomes the puppet of the clicking keys of the typewriter, dancing helplessly to its rhythm and dictation. Soon recognizing his dilemma, however, he struggles valiantly to avoid the fate he feels has been planned for him by the author.

In FEAR, a man loses four hours of his life. He knows that if he does not discover what has happened, he will go mad; if he does, he will die. This brilliant short novel should not be read alone at midnight!

The American underground develops a weapon to defeat the Russians after the United States has been attacked and invaded by Russia.

The twelfth and final book in the Fantasy Books Series

From the Introduction:

RIVAL POWERS STRUGGLE FOR SUPREMACY TO DOMINATE SPACE

Eleven and three-quarter minutes after Professor Anderley, Head of the Terran Government Energy Project, entered his laboratory, the group of squat white buildings was torn apart by a flare of disruptive energy that scattered white-hot metal and thousands of tons of masonry over three square miles of countryside.

They found the bodies of nine TG guards and three laboratory assistants who were undercover agents for the TG. They failed to find Professor Anderley. Gregor of the Space Police, in his massive office at Lunar Base, worried about it. Paul Lejeune of the Insurgents, in his asteroid retreat, also worried. Much blood, sweat and good hard cash was expended in trying to trace him, dead or alive.

But Professor Anderley reappeared, in his own good time.

From the back cover:

The weird story of the dreaded and inhuman insect known as “The Beetle.” From out of dark and mystic Egypt emerges a BEING of horror which changes its form at will and which terrorizes the people of London.

Bent upon revenge for a crime committed against the devotees of an ancient religion, it pursues its victims with an undeviated horror which will make the flesh of the reader creep.

The skill with which its fantastic horrors are presented to the reader make certain the book will not be put down before it has been read from cover to cover.
