It was unusual - most of the swans came to the nearest end of the shore to eat while a fierce windstorm blew (100kph - Nov 11 afternoon). At one point a pan was ripped from my hand and blown 'way out into the lagoon, but I was most impressed by our intrepid swans who tucked their wings down and dived into dinner with their usual enthusiasm.
There were only 2 remaining to be fed, and I skipped the mid-shore area this time, going all the way down to the far end where the slope's easier for Bijan and Boy to manage.
As they ate, something sounded like a major explosion, almost like fireworks - enough to spook all the geese, but not our hungry swans, so we carried on.
By the time I headed for home, doubled over not to be blown down...I discovered what the "explosion" had been - a huge portion of the old willow tree at the feeding area I had skipped, had snapped off and lay along the path. And felt SO lucky...I'm sure our Guardian Angel was doing double-duty that day since the swans and I are all in one piece and not a pattern in the path!
If a tree falls in the forest and someone IS around to hear it, it sounds like unstoppable death rolling through the forest directly in your direction.
This tree fell at about 10PM. It sounded like the rocky slope across the road from my campsite had given way and was taking the forest with it. I expected to hear the crush of rocks against by car before the landslide took my tent. When morning came, I was surprised to find that all that racket was caused by a single tree falling over.
