Every year at the oldest family fair in New England, the Deerfield Fair, there is a Pig Scramble for both adults and children. A pig scramble is where five names are drawn and they are chosen to try and catch piglets, easier said than done. The piglets are actually quite quick, and once caught have to be put into a sack within three minutes. This event has been going on for thirty seven years and remains very popular from year to year.

I actually built this to be displayed at the fair from Sep. 29 to the end of the fair on Oct. 2, where it is now.

Last week we went back into Queens to get our second vaccine... and I insisted we stop back at Corona Park since I knew the trees would be in bloom... what a difference 21 days makes!

Until the 19th century, the site consisted of wetlands straddling the Flushing River, which traverses the region from north to south. Starting in the first decade of the 20th century, it was used as a dumping ground for ashes, since at the time, the land was so far away from the developed parts of New York City as to be considered almost worthless. New York City Parks Commissioner Robert Moses first conceived the idea of developing a large park in Flushing Meadow in the 1920s as part of a system of parks across eastern Queens. Flushing Meadows–Corona Park was created as the site of the 1939 New York World's Fair and also hosted the 1964 New York World's Fair. Following the 1964 fair, the park fell into disrepair, although some improvements have taken place since the 1990s and 2000s.

Flushing Meadows–Corona Park retains much of the layout from the 1939 World's Fair. Its attractions include the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, the current venue for the US Open tennis tournament; Citi Field, the home of the New York Mets baseball team; the New York Hall of Science; the Queens Museum of Art; the Queens Theatre in the Park; the Queens Zoo; the Unisphere; and the New York State Pavilion. It formerly contained Shea Stadium, demolished in 2009. The Flushing River continues to run through the park, and two large lakes called Meadow and Willow Lakes take up much of the park's area south of the Long Island Expressway.

Nonsuch fair was a very large fair held on the Bank holiday scorching weekend - Nothing like a bike show for extra interest!

Yet another photo from my trip to Europe earlier this year. Saw this young couple riding their bicycles toward me. They reminded me of an old movie from the early 70s called "Melody". The movie featured the song "Melody Fair" from the Bee Gees. This young couple brought back the nostalgia.

There was definitely a dazzling array of food at the fair. Pretty much anything you could want as long as it was deep fried or barbequed.

One of the big sellers was turkey legs and it totally puzzles me. There's no way I could finish off a whole turkey leg and there's no way I'd pay $20 US for the privilege to try!

If you zoom way in you can get an idea of the prices they were charging. If the prices weren't enough to give you a heart attack all the grease definitely would!

Update: This won't zoom close enough to see the prices. I can tell you that a hamburger was $17, hot dog was $14, piggy fries were $17, and a half rack of ribs will set you back $28. Talk about sticker shock!
