..........in Skyrim!
Skyrim Town Guard says to Nancy McKeon:
-I was once an adventurer like you, then I took an arrow to the knee!
If it wasn't already obvious I can confirm that I survived my grand adventure on White Island, te puia whakaari. I'm leaving te puia whakaari - White Island, probably forever.
Leaving was no fun, just inevitable. Returning may be out of my control.
This is the view as the boat swings away from Te Awapuia Bay, looping further out to see before heading around the northern cliffs of White Island and the cruise back into Whakatāne.
Look up Whakatāne for its pronunciation. It's OK to say out loud in polite company. If anyone takes offence then they are ignorant and culturally insensitive.
Today, nobody can visit te puia whakaari. It's not because the iwi put a rāhui on the island making it tapu. That cultural impediment has been lifted and isn't an enforceable legal instrument anyway.
This curious little volcano has an odd status. It is privately owned with it being a declared private scenic reserve. My visit was only possible because of agreements between the NZ Government, the owners and the operator who took me there.
I was perfectly happy to accept that an active volcano could kill me. Adventure is like that. Not everyone is so clear in their thinking. Unfortunately for some when a phreatic eruption happened during a tour in 2019, they died or where injured. Phreatic eruptions are like steam explosions which drive the ejection of water, mud and rocks from the crater or in this case the crater lake. It gets very messy, very fast.
Of course in this age, someone somewhere will not accept that dying on an adventure is a perfectly natural and acceptable consequence. They'll look for blame so the lawyers can get a fee and they can get blood money. If only we could point to the volcano just being itself, doing what volcanoes do, and suggest they attempt to sue a landform. Indeed, it is just this silliness which has the strongest possibility of keeping me from White Island. I may feel sadness for those grieving for lost family or friends, or lamenting their life changing adventure. What makes me even more sad is that the reckless ignorance of legal instruments can try to legislate away facts of life. What a sad, sterile and smothering place that would be!

This one's from earlier this month. Mindy Cohn (Natalie from "Facts of Life") is in an film called "Violet Tendencies" that screened at Outfest at the Directors Guild of America. This is her with the director. writer and I believe director/producer and screenwriter for the Q&A. Isn't she adorable?
