Building Radio Kootwijk, Veluwe NL - 1922 - architect Julius Maria Luthmann.

The housing accommodations of Radio Kootwijk arose as a result of the building of a shortwave transmitter site with the same name, starting in 1918. The transmitters played an important role in the 20th century as a communication facility between the Netherlands and its colony of Dutch East Indies. In 1923 Dutch PTT (Post, Telegraph and Telephone Company) started trans-oceanic telegraphy using a longwave transmitter, a 400 KW high frequency alternator, from the German Telefunken company under the call sign PCG, in the 24 kHz and 48 kHz. By 1925 the longwave transmitter was changed by a shortwave tube based, electronic transmitter which had a much better performance due to the better propagation of short waves. With this new technology, in 1928 a radio-telephonic connection was established. At the end of World War II, the German occupying forces blew up the transmitter. Afterward some of the radio towers were rebuilt. Due to the development of new technologies like satellite communication, Radio Kootwijk lost its position as main overseas wireless connection point of the Netherlands. In 1980, the last transmission mast was blown up. In 2004 the park lost its last transmitter functions, and was transferred from the telephone company to the State Forestry Commission, which started attracting new buyers. The main building of the former transmitter park and named 'Building A', 'The Cathedral' or sometimes 'The Sphinx', was officially appointed as a monument. It is used as venue and scenery for several cultural events and productions, including the American film Mind Hunters in 2004.

Newmillerdam Boat House is situated on the lake at Newmillerdam. Little is known about the history of the Boathouse except that it was built by William Pilkington, first appearing on a 1826 map.

Photographs from the early 1900's show the Pilkington family entertaining their guests; the gentlemen would shoot the wildfowl on the lake, with the ladies joining them at the Boathouse for a picnic lunch sent down from the Hall.

In July 1907 the Wakefield Express reported on Miss Mary Pilkington's 80th birthday celebrations. To commemorate the event 13 guests attended a special birthday tea at her home, Rock Cottage, in the village. The following day she invited members of the Blind Institution for tea in the Boathouse when due to the beautiful weather boating was very much enjoyed.

Grade II listed, the building has been restored by Wakefield Council with Lottery and European funding, and the downstairs is now used as a visitor facility.

This photograph shows the Laser Ranging Facility at Goddard's Geophysical and Astronomical Observatory in Greenbelt, Md. The observatory helps NASA keep track of orbiting satellites. The lower of the two green beams is from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter's dedicated tracker. The other laser, although appearing to originate from above, originates from another ground system at the facility. Both beams are pointed at the moon -- specifically at LRO in orbit of the moon -- in this photo.

The picture was taken on Aug. 1, 2009, when Goddard invited guests to celebrate LRO's successful arrival at the moon. Guests could gaze at stars and the moon through telescopes, talk with the LRO team and see new images from the satellite, among other activities. A number of hands-on activities for young children and their families provided knowledge and understanding of the phases of the moon, crater creation and the scale of the Earth/moon system.

The LRO mission, built and managed by NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, launched on June 18, 2009.

The former Greenville County Courthouse stands at 130 South Main Street and was built in Beaux-Arts style in 1916-18. Architects Phillip Thornton Marye and H. Olin Jones designed the structure, while contractor James A. Jones provided the labor. The structure was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. It now houses a bookstore.

Greenville County erected a newer courthouse facility in 1949-50.

Not sure exactly when the YMCA facilities and hotel were built on the grounds, but the lobby has a real mid-century modern vibe.

The Leaning Tower of Niles, located at 6300 W. Touhy, was completed in 1934 by industrialist Robert Ilg as part of a recreation park for employees of the Ilg Hot Air Electric Ventilating Company of Chicago. It is a 1/2 size replica of the original tower in Pisa, Italy, and originally served as a water tower. The tower now sits in front of a YMCA facility...

From the Achieves, re-processed, using Photoshop CC 2021.

Lower Slaughter is a village in the English county of Gloucestershire, located in the Cotswold district, 4 miles (6.4 km) south west of the town of Stow-on-the-Wold. The village is built on both banks of the River Eye, which also flows through Upper Slaughter. At the west end of the village there is a 19th-century water mill with an undershot waterwheel and a chimney for additional steam power. There is a ford where the river widens in the village and several small stone footbridges join the two sides of the community. While the mill is built of red brick most of the 16th and 17th century homes in the village use Cotswold sandstone and are adorned with mullioned windows and often with other embellishments such as projecting gables. Records exist showing that Lower Slaughter has been inhabited for over 1000 years. The Domesday Book entry has the village name as “Sclostre”. It further notes that in 1066 and 1086 that the manor was in the sheriff's hands. Lower Slaughter Manor, a Grade-II listed 17th-century house, was granted to Sir George Whitmore in 1611 and remained in his family until 1964. The 13th century Anglican parish church is dedicated to St. Mary the Virgin. Much of the current structure was built in 1866; however, the spire and peal of six bells was recently restored. In May 2013 it was reported in the national news that the Parish Council were fiercely opposed to the presence of an icebox tricycle selling ice creams for seven days a week, six months of the year, citing that the trading times were excessive, increased footfall would prevent the grass from growing and that children could climb on the trike and fall into the nearby river.
