Lowther Castle is a ruin of a castellated country mansion in the county of Cumbria, England, that has belonged to the Lowther family, latterly the Earls of Lonsdale, since the Middle Ages. The family fortune was undermined by the extravagance of the 5th Earl of Lonsdale, a famous socialite, and the castle was closed in 1937. Its contents were removed in the late 1940s and the roof was removed in 1957.
It is now being managed by a trust with pleasant gardens within the building and in the grounds of the castle. The castle is situated just within the boundary of the Lake District National Park.

After Chiang Kai-shek's retreat to Taiwan in 1949, Chiang felt it was difficult to accommodate foreign ambassadors due to the lack of five-star hotels in Taipei. He wanted to build an extravagant hotel that would cater to foreign guests. His wife Soong Mei-ling (Madame Chiang) suggested building it on the old Taiwan Hotel on Yuanshan Mountain, the site of the ruins of the Taiwan Grand Shrine, a Shinto shrine during the Japanese rule. Chiang decided on a Chinese palace-style architecture to promote Chinese culture to the West through its extravagance.
The hotel was established in May 1952 and the main building was completed on October 10, 1973. The main building of the hotel is one of the world's tallest Chinese classical buildings at 87 metres (285 ft) high. It was also the tallest building in Taiwan from 1973 to 1981.

Lyria had been a casualty of this purge, her street art her downfall, leaving Azura in the quiet despair of forced solitude. Yet within the sanctuary of her sparse studio, Azura clung to the relics of a more vibrant epoch, her works a clandestine testament to a suppressed past. Outwardly, she donned the cloak of conformity, her azure locks and inked skin hidden beneath the guise of the unremarkable, blending into the sterile streets of Helixion like another faceless apparition.
In the sanctuary of her studio, where canvases bore silent witness to a defiance that daylight could no longer bear, Azura would prepare two cups of coffee. The ritual was a daily rite, one warm for her lips, and one left to grow cold in homage to Lyria’s preferred taste—a quiet ode to a shared past now relegated to the shadows.
Azura’s art was birthed in the stillness of the curfewed nights, under the gaze of a less vigilant tyranny. Each piece she crafted was a subversive act, a covert dispatch to those souls still receptive to the notion that their world need not be one of bleakness and fear.
Each painting was a revolt, a luminescence against the engulfing dark. There, in the interstice between the two cups, with each sip of the cold brew, Azura kept the promise of a chromatic renaissance alive, a whispered pledge to Lyria that the colour they once knew might one day bleed into the fabric of Helixion once more.

The Arkemheense polder is one of the oldest polders in the Netherlands, and for one hundred years, the Hertog Reijnout Steam Pumping Station was responsible for draining it. Even now, the coal-powered steam pumping station is called on to help out when water levels are extreme. The pumping station is open to the public and there is a visitors’ centre in the old coal shed.
Rising sea levels
In 1356, Duke Reinoud III of Guelders granted the inhabitants living in the Arkemheense polder the right to build dikes. This was no extravagance, because the rising sea levels were having an increasing effect on the Arkemheense polder. In 1825, the coast along the Zuiderzee from Amersfoort to Friesland was plagued by breached dikes and flooding.It was not until the large dike, the Afsluitdijk, was built and the Zuiderzee was turned into the IJsselmeer Lake so that the danger of serious flooding subsided.
Pumping
For centuries, the water level in the polder was controlled using floodgates that were closed when the Zuiderzee was at high tide. Excess water was drained off through a sluice. This old water drainage system was in urgent need of improvement. There was already talk, in 1820, about using a windmill for drainage, but it took until 1863 for the mill to be built. It was named Hertog Reijnout after the duke who issued the right to build dikes here in the 14th century.
Steam engine
Twenty years later, in 1883, the windmill was replaced by a steam pumping engine. The old windmill was converted into a home for the pumping station´s operator. The steam engine came from the company Backer & Rueb in Breda.
The pumping engine has two scoop wheels and can drain an area of 3000 hectares. It was in proud service for exactly one hundred years. Then, in 1983, drainage was taken over by an electric pumping engine. Since its restoration, the steam pumping engine has been on view for the public and is stoked about 12 times every year, occasionally helping out when the electric pumping engine cannot handle the capacity on its own.
I always hoped these shoes would lure an Enchanted Doll my way eventually....it only took four years!! :)

The theme for “Smile on Saturday” for the 28th of May is “headwear in square”, which can be any kind of headwear, so long as it is cropped into a square image. Anyone who follows my photostream knows that I love and collect 1:12 size miniatures which I photograph in realistic scenes. The artifice of recreating in minute detail items in 1:12 scale always amazes me, and it’s amazing how the eye can be fooled. Therefore, when the theme came up, I immediately thought of some of my miniature artisan hats, which really are exquisite little pieces of art in their own right. 1:12 size miniature hats made to such exacting standards of quality and realism are often far more expensive than real hats are. When you think that one would sit comfortably on the tip of your index finger, yet it could cost in excess of $150.00 or £100.00, makes them an extravagance. American artists seem to have the monopoly on this skill and some of the hats that I have seen or acquired over the years are remarkable. I have selected five of my favourites for you today. I hope you like my choice for the theme this week, and that it makes you smile.

“Shona” (yes, this hat actually has a name, just like hats from the Golden Age of Fashion) is a purple Edwardian toque in the style popular just before and after the Great War. Made of soft velvet, she is covered in silk flowers and lace and is made by Miss Amelia’s Miniatures in the Canary Islands. It is an artisan miniature made just like a real hat, right down to a tag in the inside of the crown to show where the back of the hat is!
The camel coloured wide brimmed Edwardian picture hat is made of brown felt and is trimmed with miniature coffee coloured braid. The brim is decorated with hand curled feathers, dyed to match the shade of the hat, as well as a spray of golden “grapes” and dyed flowers. Acquired from an American miniatures collector who was divesting herself of some of her collection, I am unsure who the maker was, other than both this and the green hat were made by the same American miniature artisan.
The romantic cream wide brimmed summer hat decorated with pink satin roses and ribbons, and trimmed on the underside with the finest lace, is reminiscent of the style of hats worn and made popular by the Queen Mother (then the newly minted Duchess of York) in the mid 1920s. The maker for this hat is unknown, but it is a part of a larger collection of 1:12 artisan hats and miniature accessories I bought from an American miniature collector Marilyn Bickel.
The yellow straw hat decorated with ornamental flowers and an organza ribbon of lemon yellow is of late 1920s to early 1930s style. The maker for this hat is also unknown, but is another piece from the collection I bought from American miniature collector Marilyn Bickel.
The green coloured wide brimmed Edwardian picture hat is made of bright green felt and is trimmed with miniature turquoise coloured braid. The brim is decorated with hand curled feathers, dyed to match the shade of the hat, as well as a spray of silver silk flowers. Nature speaks to us through different images, landscapes, colors, patterns, and forms of exquisite beauty. As we admire nature’s extravagance, our emotions and feelings become part of it. This harmonious balance makes our souls happy.
