Buona domenica

No Taller then a Beer Can.

Some of the trees in Lassen National Park suffered from drought, heat or bug damage. Trees in this condition burn very easily - much of the eastern half of the park had already been burned in a huge forest fire. These days it is very common to find damaged trees in the western United States and Canada.

An early morning job running as Extra 774 west rips through Garnet with 774 leading 2230-A and only 11 cars on February 13, 1978. The SOO was burdened with more eastbound business than westbound at the time and about three evenings a week there would be an eastbound extra that would run with anywhere from 85-150 cars. This was business that couldn't be handled on daily freight 912 which was filled out to over 100 cars most days. Westbound business wasn't as heavy and the returning crew and power off the extra's would often have only a handful to 50 cars. The westbound extras normally did local work so 911 could be expedited but on this day it appears there was no local work just overflow off 911 with those big ACR chip battlewagons on the head pin.

I tried hard to get a comp of this beautiful falls but the light behind was too harsh to shoot the top of the falls. I opted for a closer in shot cutting off the top of the falls leaving it kind of mysterious !! Sometimes it's what you can't see....Kris

Plow Extra WA-3 throws the snow at Old Bangor Road on 2/13/2017, during winter storm Orson.

The winter of 2016-2017, was probably the worst in recent years. The first major storm hit on Halloween, followed by back to back blizzards in December, dumping as much as two feet in places. Then in January we had storms almost every week.

This alone plugged the railroads up, since about the time they got dug out another storm hit and buried everything again.

Then on 2/13/17 the biggest storm of the year hit. Many places got well over 3 feet of snow. A friend was the engineer on POWA and met a ballast regulator at Leeds Jct as the storm was winding up. With snow from this system and the previous storms, snow in many places was as high as the walkways on the locomotives by the time they got to Waterville.

Following the storm, virtually every railroad ran plows and spreaders. This extra was running during the storm, first plowing to Hinkley I believe to rescue Sappi-3 at the mill.

Then back to CPF-110 and to Bangor, before doing the Bucksport Branch, then east on the main to Old Town and points east the following day. The train ended up derailing just outside Bucksport. By this point the paper mill was being scrapped and Pan Am decided to pull the remaining scrap cars out, before discontinuing runs to Bucksport, due to the extent of the damage.

Originally, a former MEC spreader was going to be used on the return trip. However the turntable at Waterville became snowed in, so the railroad settled for exMEC plow 90, the only Jordan wedge plow on the railroad. I ended up catching them at Old Bangor Road in East Newport and got some nice shots of the train blasting through the snow banks.

Pan Am only ran a few more plow extras after this, so I was lucky to catch it when I did. With storms being as weak as they are now and most of the snow fighting equipment being out of service, its unlikely we will see plows out in the near future.

A D901 extra job with 83 cars for the Great Lakes Central climbs east out of the Thornapple River valley behind a pair of ES44AHs. The train would go as far as the GLC interchange in Howell before turning back west with Grand Rapids-bound traffic.

DMIR 209 and 417 pull up to the searchlights at Wolf as they put their train away and end their day on January 30, 2004.

Back before the CN took over, the Missabe would run extra limestone trains of about 30 cars like this for Minntac. Despite the shorter train, the frigid weather on this January day would not allow this crew to make it back to Proctor, so they parked it on the Wolf Storage Track. Temps. were under -30F overnight and not above zero during a three day stretch here in late January 2004. An ID pellet train would later pick up this power and take it to Two Harbors, as power was needed there because of all the power failures during this stretch of cold weather in the Missabe's last winter.
