Ultima Thule is not the object humanity thought that it was last month. When the robotic New Horizons spacecraft zoomed past the distant asteroid Ultima Thule (officially 2014 MU69) in early January, early images showed two circular lobes that when most simply extrapolated to 3D were thought to be, roughly, spheres. However, analyses of newly beamed-back images -- including many taken soon after closest approach -- shows eclipsed stars re-appearing sooner than expected. The only explanation possible is that this 30-km long Kuiper belt object has a different 3D shape than believed only a few weeks ago. Specifically, as shown in the featured illustration, it now appears that the larger lobe -- Ultima -- is more similar to a fluffy pancake than a sphere, while the smaller lobe -- Thule -- resembles a dented walnut. The remaining uncertainty in the outlines are shown by the dashed blue lines. The new shape information indicates that gravity -- which contracts more massive bodies into spheres -- played perhaps less of a role in contouring the lobes of Ultima Thule than previously thought. The New Horizons spacecraft continued on to Ultima Thule after passing Pluto in mid-2015. New data and images are still being received. via NASA go.nasa.gov/2THETDp

The essays selected for this volume are chosen to reflect the important and intersecting ways in which over the last forty years Meg Twycross has shifted paradigms for people reading early English religious drama. The focus of Meg Twycross’s research has been on performance in its many aspects, and this volume chooses four of the most important strands of her work - the York plays; new ways of understanding acting and performance in late medieval theatre, particularly in Britain and across Europe; why scenes are staged in the ways they are, verbally and by extrapolation visually, by close reading of texts against the background of medieval theology; and the attention paid to wider contexts of medieval theatre - concentrating especially on essays that are not easily available today.

These thematic strands are reflective of Meg Twycross’s major contribution to the field. They also represent those areas from her wider work which will have most utility and value for those, whether students or senior specialists in areas beyond early drama, who are looking for ways into understanding English medieval plays. The crucial work that has been done here has opened new perspectives on late medieval theatre, and will allow new generations to begin their study and research from further along the road.

Photogarphed on July 10, 2010 on Pine Mountain, Ventura Co., California

Image shows a portion of an Eriodictyon leaf, with a female of the leaf beetle species Trirhabda eriodictyonis.

My best stab at a "fine-level" ID for the plant here is Eriodictyon crassifolium var. denudatum Abrams 1915...which was put into synonymy with E. crassifolium var. nigrescens in the 1993 Jepson Manual.

The clearly embossed primary veins (pinnately diverging off mid-vein) on the upper leaf surface here...and the similarly evident relief of the more finely reticulate secondary venation...are more akin to the leaf surface gestalt of E. crassifolium than to E. trichocalyx.

And though it appears somewhat shiny, the "glutinosity" of the leaf here does not have the same "thick-waxy" quality of typical T. trichocalyx in the surrounding area.

Additionally, although the general outline of the leaf is not entirely visible here...extrapolating from what can be seen...it looks like the leaf shape is intermediate between the typically oblong-lanceolate outline of E. trichocalyx and the (more narrow end of the spectrum for the) ovate-lanceolate leaf outline of E. crassifolium var. nigrescens. (Note that leaf shape nuances can be subtle, and the usage of terms like "oblong-ovate" and "ovate-lanceolate" in one group of plants may refer to a gestalt that is relatively more or less pronounced than for another, depending on the norms for leaf shapes in that group.)

Pine Mountain is in the area of Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties where variation and intergrades among E. crassifolium, californicum and trichocalyx can make species determination difficult...see the discussion near the bottom of pg. 129 of the paper Abrams & Smiley (1915).

Inspired by colors and shapes, crying out for extrapolation bordering on abstraction, which turns out to be a pretty cool place.

The Irish stoat (Mustela erminea hibernica) is found all over Ireland and mainly eats rabbits.

They are usually, and mistakenly, called weasels in rural areas. It is in fact a distinctive stoat and a separate Irish sub-species.

It was first described by Oldfield Thomas and Gerald Edwin Barrett-Hamilton in the late 19th century. It has brown upper body fur, possibly darker then stoats elsewhere, but this has never been quantified. It has a white underside, and occasionally a white spot or two on the lips. Usually it has an irregular back-belly line between the brown back and the white underside. However, around 12% have straight back-belly lines, like stoats found in the rest of Europe. The tip of the tail is always black, a classic characteristic of stoats. It does not normally become white, ermine, in winter. It has characteristics of some weasels, the irregular back-belly line, and stoats, the back tail tip. They are highly sexually dimorphic, the females are much smaller than the males, and this is especially pronounced in the Irish sub-species, as it is in Irish otters.

The coat characteristics, plus its size, led to suggestions that the Irish stoat represents an intermediate form between weasels and stoats. This is now known not to be true and it is in fact a long term Irish native adapted to the lack of sitting snow. Hence it does not need to go white, which is linked to the irregular back-belly line. It represents part of an old ecosystem which was either in Ireland, or was connected to Ireland, in the post glacial period. It is regarded as a ‘good’ subspecies and possibly represents a cold tolerant form.

Distribution

Stoats are found all over northern Europe, Asia and North America, as well as in New Zealand where they have been introduced. As they vary in size and coat colour, many subspecies have been described across their range. The Irish sub-species occurs all over Ireland and the Isle of Man and there is a similar type of stoat off the Scottish islands of Islay and Jura. There are also similar stoats in the north west of North America, again in areas which lack a lot of sitting snow and where they do not, often, go white in winter. This is probably an example of parallel evolution. Irish stoats occur in most habitats with sufficient cover, including urban areas, for example rat infested rubbish dumps. However, studies have shown that they occur most often in wooded areas, and readily climb trees.

Den Sites

Den sites have been described that were found in rat, rabbit and wood mouse burrows as well as in piles of sticks and stones and up trees. It is in these den sites that they acquire most of their flea and ticks infestations. They also often have infestation of lice and sometimes mites. High ectoparasite loads are highly clumped, for example 1,819 harvest mites were found on a single female stoat. Up to 50% of their skulls show damage by a nematode parasite called Skrjabingylus nasicola, which infest the sinuses and can cause holes in the skulls.

Reproduction

There have been few studies of the Irish stoat and to date only one study using radio telemetry, and one study using hair tubes. The males are fecund from March to August and are sexually mature as one year olds. The females, extraordinarily, are sexually mature while in the nest. The weight of the baculum bone, or os penis bone, can be used to age males. The young are born in early April and lactation occurs in April, May, June and probably early July. Females have eight, nine or ten nipples, with a mean of nine. A female, assumed to be with young, expanded her home range from 15ha in May to 22ha in July, which is considered to reflect the increased nutritional needs of her and her young. One male home range of 11ha has been measured. Daily movement distance for males was 250m and females 241m. They hunt systematically across micro habitats, for example climbing and searching most trees in woodland. Their predation of species that use tree holes may be significant as several species that might be expected to occur in Irish woods are absent.

Growth is mainly in the nest and most are adult size by September. This suggests that it is the amount of prey brought to the nest that determines size. There is a very marked north south cline in stoats in Ireland, with those in the north being small while those in the south are big. This possibly is a result of an earlier availability of suitably portable prey such as young rabbits in the south, or perhaps, the absence of the weasel.

Foraging/Hunting/Diet

They can make several noises, including hissing and chattering when agitated. Their diet has been the subject of four systematic studies plus many incidental observations. Their main prey is rabbits, followed by pygmy shrews, birds, birds’ eggs, rats, mice and voles. It is also possible that fruit and insects may form part of their diet. There are also several reports of them predating and eating fish on seashores, which has led to a suggestions that they are originally coastal animals.

Conservation Status

There is no information on the overall status of the population, or its conservation, and the issue has never been seriously addressed, excepting where they need to be culled to protect birds. There are an estimated 160,000, but this figure is based as an extrapolation for data from Britain and it would be truthful to say we have no idea of how many Irish stoats there are. The Irish stoat is predated by foxes, dogs, and martens, and is probably also taken by birds of prey such as owls and eagles. They are also a frequent victim of road traffic and such accidents peak seasonally. The Irish stoat is protected under the Wildlife Act (1976) and Wildlife (Amendment) Act 2000 and is one of the species protected under regulations (Protection of Wild Animals) in 1980 which enabled Ireland to comply with the provisions of the Bern Convention of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats, which was ratified by Ireland in April 1982.

This is an uncropped photo...I cropped out a small section and tried to count that section, then extrapolate. I estimated that there are roughly 3600 birds in this frame. The entire flock was easily 25 times this number, so it was probably upwards of 100,000 birds, mostly Common Grackles and Red-winged Blackbirds. This was a relatively small flock, compared to some of the fall migratory flocks that stretch for what seems like miles as they pass over in those massive, undulating ribbons. The flocks are staggering when you actually try to put numbers to them.

Thank you Picnik.

Using picnik effects to create a quilt-like appearance. Would it be possible to use this technique to design quilts? How about looking at portraiture a la Chuck Close?

Yeah, Stonehenge rocks!

For almost everyone who visits Stonehenge is likely just some happy snaps and another tick on the bucket list. It shouldn't be.

Stonehenge is a great detective story, a description of landscape archaeology, it's botany, palaeontology, geology, isotope geochemistry, surveying, astronomy, belief systems, agriculture, the organisation of labour and on and on.

A few archaeologists have obsessed over Stonehenge and through their collection of facts have been able to, like a detective piece together logical sequences of events which can be extrapolated to combine all the physical facts and related humanity of a long lived, evolving and from their evidence clearly a place of great significance. It's a place where astronomy and the axial precession of the Earth interacts with a human need for meaning placed in a temporal context. Stonehenge, built to celebrate the solstices now has a bit of a problem. They no longer line up with the stones and because it is too hard to turn it around, it'll be a long time before it lines up again.

When visiting you are asked not to touch the stones. That seems illogical. What harm could it do? Well, there are 70 species of lichens on the stones and some with very restricted and localised distributions. People goo and lichens should not interact if we value the diversity of nature.

Archaeology is easy. But why palaeontology? This isn't a fossil site. There are odd holes through the sarsen stones. They aren't man made but the eroded out trunks of long dead trees which were deposited with the sands that make up these rocks.

Geology and isotope geochemistry? The stones came from somewhere. For the sarsens its just about the lithology. But for the blue stones they can be traced by the signature of the isotopes of elements in their minerals. They come from a long way away.

Just accept that Stonehenge Rocks and rocks can tell more about just about anything if you'll just let them.

I like this sign. It carries a lot of information. It tells us what happens in the works at the back of these houses, it even displays a samples of the work. It tells us how to make contact. The telephone number is unreconstructed, it's out of date but still usable (even I can extrapolate it to 0207 354 etc.). This firm have been here for long time, the sign tells us that but, hey, they are ironworkers not sign-writers. The white undercoat is weathering away to show an older sign. This palimpsest gives us clues about a previous life.

I think it must be possible to read multiple layers of meaning expressed on the facades of buildings and begin to understand what the buildings can tell us about themselves, the people who have used them over time, and the evolution of the places places between them. Could I sit on a seat in Newington Green and begin to read the place as I would read a book? I wonder.

I missed one, apparently. I guess the drop never fell. However, it was enough to use the others to extrapolate. Testing later, all the holes I drilled with a 3/8" brad point bit on my drill press lined up very well with the planer's mounting holes. Unfortunately, my longest carriage bolts only come to about flush with the end of the hole. I need about another 1/2". It's never fun to run to the hardware store just for 4 carriage bolts. Maybe I'll pick up a wood chipper, too :)

Native to: Assam, Borneo, China South-Central, East Himalaya, Malaya, Maluku, Myanmar, Philippines, Sulawesi, Sumatera, Thailand, Tibet. Habitat: lowland and hill forest to 1000. Tall deciduous tree growing up to 55 meters tall. The bole can be up to 150cm in diameter and has prominent buttresses. The tree is harvested from the wild for its wood, which is known as 'white meranti' and is commonly traded. A major source of timber within its native range, the tree also used to be widely exploited for the resin (known as 'damar tenang) it yields.

Extrapolation from the Peninsular Malaysian Fourth National Forest Inventory (2007) data gave an estimated 111,000 adult stems above 30 cm dbh in the Permanent Reserved Forests. Malaysia Plant Red List - Near Threatened (NT). n.b. This was an old survey. I have no idea of the current assessment.

I drew a curve with the mouse until I got a result I liked from the processes in my code. Then I applied various tweaks such as varying the number of extrapolated curves, varying the number of circles in each Bezier curve, randomly displacing the Bezier curves by small distances, etc. I saved the variations and composited them in Illustrator.

The Turton Jail was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on January 17, 2024. Photograph by SHPO staff, 2022.

The two-cell, vault-roofed concrete jail is estimated to have been constructed in 1911 (extrapolating from deed research and town board minutes). One-room jails throughout the Great Plains are often utilitarian designs, using local and/or affordable construction materials. Log, stone, brick, wood, and concrete were the most common choices. Interior cells were typically ordered from manufacturers and made of strap iron done in a cold riveting process.

The intent of the small-town jail was temporary confinement, a space to impound people causing a public nuisance (often because of intoxication) or to hold people for transfer to county or state institutions.

Wait Wright was a Civil War Veteran. He served as a Private in Company G, 17 Michigan Volunteers. He is buried in Towns Cemetery, Amber Township, Mason County, Michigan.

Wait Wright was a veteran of the US Civil War.

In the 1870 US Census, Wait Wright, who was born in Canada, is living with his wife Axalla born in Pennsylvania, in Walton, Eaton County, Michigan and their children; Wealthy, age 17; Waite, age 14; Warren, age 14; Josiah, age 12; Walker, age 10; Jane, age 7; Lincoln, age 4; and Ida, age 2. His occupation is listed as farmer.

In the 1880 US Census, Wait Wright is living as a boarder with Warren and Nettie Wright in Amber Township, Michigan along with two of his younger children, Lincoln and Ida. Most likely, Axalla died before 1880. His son Joshua is also living in Amber with his wife Jane and their 3 1/2 year old daughter, Rosa.

The above month of birth was extrapolated from the 1900 US census. He is buried in Towns Cemetery, Mason County, Michigan.

Streams and rivers that form on top of the Greenland ice sheet during spring and summer are the main agent transporting melt runoff from the ice sheet to the ocean.

“Surface melting in Greenland has increased recently, and we lacked a rigorous estimate of the water volumes being produced and their transport,” said Tom Wagner, the cryosphere program scientist at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “NASA funds fieldwork like Smith’s because it helps us to interpret satellite data, and to extrapolate measurements from the local field sites to the larger ice sheet."

The picture 9399 and 9399 Persp.corr.are the same. Persp.corr means: the outlook is corrected after the extraction, without the assistance of the author. !!! (Cesky Krumlov)

The focal length is 10 mm, therefore wide-angle, extrapolated to full screen mode: 15 mm.

SHORTER the focal length, bigger the deficit in substance !

Logo Design Wichita Area. The GoJoe's logo design is a steaming cup of coffee held by cupped hands. Hands that seem to hold the cup of coffee with great care and concern as if GoJoe's coffee is special and ready to go. The steam is made of dots that are extrapolated onto other elements of the brand and graphic design. The colors are a modern combination of a toxic blue and a traditional brown.

Here's the idea (thanks to "Jenny Harada" . . . see the "LINK")

This Christmas Star was made from discarded colorful calendar artwork. All we did was extrapolate the card template to a larger size.

This would make a great "PiNATA" too!
