It turns out, most of the extinct volcanoes in New Mexico owe their existence to the Rio Grande Rift, which started forming around 35 million years ago toward the end of the Laramide Orogeny, the episode of mountain building that created the Rocky Mountains. The crust started pulling apart in a long line that neatly bisected New Mexico, creating volcanoes and volcanic valleys. The rift continued for many millions of years and may, in fact, still be going on.

This particular valley around Taos was filled with flows of basalt and rhyolite lava thousands of feet deep over a period between 1.8 million and 4 million years ago. At some point much more recently, the Rio Grande started flowing over this generally flat plain, where it began carving its gorge. It's managed to dig 650 feet into the lava beds so far, exposing some fun formations for geological types.

Side note: My mental view of the Rio Grande has always been colored by the images of a narrow stream lined with prison fences in south Texas scrub desert. I knew it had gorges, but I don't guess I'd ever believed it. I was pleasantly surprised.

Exhibition at the Houston Zoo. Halloween.

This is a formaldehyde-ified Coelacanth. You'll never see one live in captivity since they can't survive in water that isn't greatly pressurized. Also, this is the only thing I remember from my last trip to the aquarium some 20 years ago.
