Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs

There is nothing sadder than seeing the word "Extinct" next to a name. Shame on our ancestors for allowing this to happen.

Date: 4th c. BCE (gate: 2nd c. BCE )

Current location: Priene (Extinct city)

Description of work: Distant view of city from above, Priene. Photo: A. MacNeal. "Priene was laid out on the type of grid plan advocated by Hippodamos of Miletos, but the architect most closely associated with the city was Pytheos, who had earlier worked on the Carian National Shrine at Labraunda and the Mausoleum of Halikarnassos. According to Vitruvius (IV.iii.1–2; VII.Pref.12), Pytheos erected the Temple of Athena at Priene (c. 350–c. 340 bc) and wrote a book about its design, expressing his preference for the Ionic order over the Doric." - Hoepfner, Grove Art Online

Trilobites are extinct marine arthropods of great diversity and importance as Paleozoic guide fossils. The body has three major divisions and the thorax had three lobed segments. They were bottom-feeding scavengers and predators.

The Elrathia trilobite is from the Middle Cambrian. This specimen is 13mm x 11mm.

Ice Age: The Lost Kingdom was at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens on Westbourne Road in Edgbaston from the 6th to the 28th April 2019. They kept sending me emails for 20% off, but then got one for 40% off early bird for the opening weekend, and that convinced me to go!

Similar to the 2017 event with dinosaurs, but with extinct animals from the ice age.

The California grizzly bear is the state animal of California. It was poignantly chosen to represent the state several decades after this subspecies of the brown bear was already extinct. This taxidermied specimen at the Museum of Natural History in Los Angeles is a sepulchral reminder of this magnificent creature.

This bear is displayed against a dark backdrop and lighted dramatically so that it is impossible to miss when you enter the room.

Purchased a few years ago, I wish I had data on where it was collected.

The Rugosa, also called the Tetracoralla, are an extinct order of coral that were abundant in Middle Ordovician to Late Permian seas.

Solitary rugosans (e.g., Caninia, Lophophyllidium, Neozaphrentis, Streptelasma) are often referred to as horn corals because of a unique horn-shaped chamber with a wrinkled, or rugose, wall. Some solitary rugosans reached nearly a meter in length. However, some species of rugose corals could form large colonies (e.g., Lithostrotion). When radiating septa were present, they were usually in multiples of four, hence Tetracoralla in contrast to modern hexacoralla, colonial polyps generally with six-fold symmetry.

Rugose corals have a skeleton made of calcite that is often fossilized. Like modern corals (Scleractinia), rugose corals were invariably benthic, living on the sea floor or in a reef-framework. Although there is no direct proof, it is inferred that these Palaeozoic corals possessed stinging cells to capture prey. They also had tentacles to help them catch prey. Technically they were carnivores, but prey-size was so small they are often referred to as microcarnivores

Long dormant volcano. Budj Bim is the source of the Tyrendarra lava flow which extends over 50km to the southwest. It is central to the history of the Gunditjmara people.

Mount Eccles National Park is Victoria’s first co-managed national park. The park is managed by Gunditjmara Traditional Owners and Parks Victoria.

The park’s tranquil crater lake and pleasant bushland surrounds make it a pleasant place for picnicking, camping and bushwalking. Nature trails follow the old crater rim.
