Our trip to Majdanek Extermination Camp on the outskirts of Lublin proved emotional as you might expect. Certain sights such as this accommodation hut filled with shoes really brought home the scale of the horrors that were carried out there in a way that reading about the statistics can't.

From Wikipedia, 'Majdanek or KL Lublin was a Nazi German Extermination camp established on the outskirts of the city of Lublin during the German occupation of Poland in World War II. Although initially purposed for forced labor rather than extermination, the camp was used to kill people on an industrial scale during Operation Reinhard, the German plan to murder all Jews within their own General Government territory of Poland.

The camp, which operated from October 1, 1941 until July 22, 1944, was captured nearly intact, because the rapid advance of the Soviet Red Army during Operation Bagration prevented the SS from destroying most of its infrastructure, but also due to ineptitude of commandant Anton Thernes who failed in his task of removing incriminating evidence of war crimes. Therefore, Majdanek became the first concentration camp discovered by Allied forces.

Also known to the SS as Konzentrationslager Lublin, Majdanek remains the best preserved Nazi concentration camp of the Holocaust.'

Spectacular dalek spotted in the Cheshire countryside

say the daleks....Years ago (like 40+) the producers asked kids to write new episodes of Dr. Who. The results proved too violent to produce.

A squad of T-800s is eradicating a xenomorph nest. But with that acidic blood splatter they need to be careful.

Personally I found this shot really difficult, there's a lot going on and I had trouble getting a decent angle.

Winspit Quarry,

near Worth Matravers,

Dorset.

TAKEN - 5.29p.m. Tue 8th Sept'20

Winspit is a disused quarry on the cliffs near Worth Matravers in the Isle of Purbeck, Dorset, England that is no longer in use. To the west and east are the hills of West Man and East Man.

Until around 1940 Winspit was used as a stone quarry, providing stone for buildings in London. During World War II it was used as a site for naval and air defences. After the war the caves were opened to the public. They were used as a location for the planet Mecron II in the Blake's 7 episode "Games", and in Doctor Who they were used in the story "The Underwater Menace", and then as the planet Skaro in the serial "Destiny of the Daleks", the quarry's stone cottage and two other larger buildings, (which were just empty derelict shells, with their roofs missing), were used in "Destiny", they were transformed into the external ruins of the long abandoned Dalek city and disused Kaled Bunkers. Later for the 2012 Disney film John Carter it was used as the scene location for the "Orkney Dig". The quarry is now a lesser-known tourist attraction. Recently many of Winspit's caves have been closed off for public safety and bat conservation.

Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp was the largest camp in the Third Reich. According to historical investigations, 1,5 million people, among them a great number of Jews, were systematically starved, tortured and murdered in this camp.

Auschwitz - Birkenau is the symbol of holocaust and humanity's cruelty to its fellow human beings in the 20th century.

In June 2007, The World Heritage Committee has approved Poland's request to change the name of Auschwitz on UNESCO's World Heritage List. After international consultations, the property, listed as "Auschwitz Concentration Camp" in 1979, is to have the title of "Auschwitz Birkenau" and the subtitle of "German Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp (1940-1945). July 2nd 2007 was also the 60th anniversary of oppening Auschwitz Museum.

"Death Wall." From 1941-1943, the SS shot several thousand people at the Death Wall in the courtyard between Blocks No. 10 and 11. Those who died here were mostly Polish political prisoners, and above all leaders and members of the underground organization, people involved in planning escapes and aiding escapees, and those maintaining contacts with the outside world

Our area is starting to see large numbers of invasive Spotted Lanterflies now so I was happy to spot this one caught in a Furrow Orb web. As I was watching, the spider came charging out and went to work on the fly. Usually these orbs are nocturnal and I rarely see them during the day. You can see that she has a bubble of moisture - I'm not sure if that is venom that she is getting ready to put in the lanternfly or if it is "juicy bits" from the insect. Interesting...

This guy was built around his head, which I tablescrapped months ago after getting a bunch of the shovel pieces. I guess you can think of him as sort of a robosaint-inspired followup to my horse.

Also, I'm trying something new with my photo uploads this time. I think a main image alone might look better in feeds, so I've uploaded the other two as private, and put them so you can see them in this album here. I'd love to hear which way of presenting you prefer, if you have a preference. And as always, enjoy the MOC!

Also, here's the more detailed 'bio,' since I've gone ahead and entered this guy in the Brickset character contest:

Wasp Wednesday

Shortly after 6 a.m. Bill was up on the roof in his Protective Outfit spraying the wasps. He uses some sort of gas then a powder.

This rather unassuming sparrow was named in 1857 by John Cassin to honour his ornithologist friend Thomas Brewer. Brewer also has a North American Blackbird named after him: www.flickr.com/photos/timmelling/10513751133/in/photolist

Brewer's Sparrow (Spizella breweri) is found patchily from Alaska and southern Canada and through a large part of the western USA where it inhabits sagebrush areas. The northern populations inhabit scrub at the treeline and were formerly split as the Timberline Sparrow (S.b. taverneri). They all move south in winter to Mexico and SW USA. I photographed this wintering bird on Mexico's Baja peninsula.

Thomas Mayo Brewer (1814-1880) was the son of a revolutionary patriot, Colonel James Brewer, who took part in the Boston Tea Party. Thomas Brewer was perhaps most famous for getting involved in a public spat with Elliott Coues over whether the recently introduced House Sparrows should be exterminated. Brewer was on the side of the House Sparrows in what became known as the Sparrow War. I remember a similar schism occurring in Britain over the introduced Ruddy Duck which I wrote about here: www.flickr.com/photos/timmelling/52845641379/in/photolist

I've been wanting to have a go at tube light painting for a while now so tonight was my first attempt and I thought I'd start small and work my way up so Derek volunteered to be a model for me tonight!

This bird was nearly exterminated by the search for plumes to decorate ladies hats. Attempts to protect it cost several wardens their lives. It has made a remarkable recovery and is now widespread and often viewed.

Section of border wall, Border Patrol drag chain, wood blocking used in construction of border wall

"Think of the sounds you might hear if you were standing along the U.S. border and Mexico-distant voices ande laughter in some places, generators in others, occasional vehicles, barking dogs, birds, and most often, silence. Instruments reflect the border's complicated atmosphere and culture. Designed an assembled by experimental composer and performance artist Guillermo Galindo from discarded objects picked up and brought back to his home in Oakland, California, often by his photographer friend, Richard Misrach.

This multi-dimensional collaboration between heralded photographer Richard Misrach and innovative artist-musician Guillermo Galindo examines the border between the United States and Mexico through a revelatory, humanistic lens. Border Cantos brings together Misrach’s often large-scale photographs with musical instruments that Galindo has created out of artifacts like clothing, shotgun shells, drag tires, and toys found along the border fence. These items, together with the sound and video installations of Galindo playing his instruments, evoke the raw authority of the wall while conjuring the quiet unease that suffuses the U.S. side of the border.
