Stockholm held its pride parade yesterday. Having never been to Chicago's version, I couldn't compare the two, but this one featured 50,000+ participants and was absolutely crazy.
It was about 5 or 6 deep along the entire route, so I was having trouble getting good shots. A photographer walking the route noticed my troubles, and she pulled me into the street with her. And even though I was walking around with my dinky Powershot A540, flanked by DSLRs everywhere, security didn't say anything as long as I acted like I was supposed to be there. Ironically, I did get yelled at by security when I was on the sidewalk, leaning my camera out a little too far. Long story short, the opportunity allowed me to get some great close-up shots.

One of my favorite shots from the Michigan Cirque Du Soleil shows. The Makeup is just outstanding and I couldn't ask for a better expression. Great big eyes...need I say more.

Tyler played some music for the open mic, some great tunes... He's just passing through Calgary on his way across Canada, originally from Inuvik, way up north... www.facebook.com/pages/Tyler-Maps/632733003408266
A monthly event of mainly poetry, with some music mixed in... Didn't feel like "working" it with my SLR gear, just took a few camera phone photos (Galaxy S3), it struggles in low light like this...

Emotional Expressions , JOy and Gaiety Seen During CTM - Chennai Trail Marathon Held on 07th sep 2014 in chennai
Nemon is a very statuesque and eccentric person - very nice and lots of fun to be around. Many of the events where I took some of my best goth portraits took place at his house.
I felt it high time that I begin to post some pics from the series of gothic portraits I did in 2000. It began as an assignment for Photography II - the teacher wanted us to do a series of something. Then I recalled an event where there were swarms of fascinating people who referred to themselves as "gothic". I truly admired their individuality and thought that it would make for an interesting series, so I began going to gothic events and asking some of them if I could photograph them. Subsequently, I began to interview them to find out more about them. I found that for the most part, they were very sweet, friendly and artistic, and more than eager to pose for me. They turned out to be such wonderful models, and the photos were very striking! In fact of all the work I had presented to my teacher, he singled out this series and said "that is what you should be doing". He and my fellow students felt the photos were very powerful. He ended up giving me one of the three spots in his student photography show. Thirteen of my pieces were on display. I had many more, but they had to be edited down due to lack of space. I truly enjoyed going to these events, and found I had a bit of a wild streak in me. I loved the music and the setting...I miss it, and am planning on picking up this series once again. I felt it fitting that this series be called "The Individuals".
I've always been fascinated by how quickly facial expressions change and the complexity of the emotions we can convey using the muscles in our faces. It is the language actors use to tell a story and the thing that photographers try to capture in a split second.
I discovered that many times the expressions of the people around the subject are even more interesting.....a few of those pics......
JOSÉ PARLÁ
Roots
Feb. 7 - July 16, 2017
SCAD Museum of Art presents "Roots," an exhibition of recent artworks by SCAD painting alumnus José Parlá that explores the artist’s relationships to the rich contexts and experiences that shaped his experience and practice. A Cuban American artist based in Brooklyn, New York, Parlá is known for his paintings, architectural collaborations, sculpture and photography. He spent his formative years immersed in the thriving underground art scene of Miami, Florida’s, where the multicultural environment and social processes deeply impacted his perception of urban space. In his practice, Parlá highlights the cultural bonds between communities and the expression thereof.
He works with a fluidity that results in different scales, ranging from mid-sized canvases and sculptures to large-scale paintings and monumental site-specific installations. In his artwork, formal elements such as color, texture and the materiality of his medium are employed as a semiotic system that can be read only through feeling. Every tone, shape and surface stands as a symbol for personal reminiscences or historical facts. In the work "Nuevo Rumbo,” deep shades of Prussian blue are used to reference Cuban History from colonialism to the Cuban Revolution to current news, while soft pink areas with white lettering are used to talk about the human heart. The symbols created by the artist become more robust through a process of layering that results in areas of opacity and visibility that conceal or reveal cryptic codes.
Parlá produces a gestural landscape with juxtaposed characters, hieroglyphs and words that is deliberately created to serve as a carrier of meaning. Moreover, the brushstroke and the choreography of shapes attest to what can be described as a performative act, one that offers a navigable experience for the viewer pointing to the legacy of abstract expressionism. The titles of his works often create playful connotations as signifiers to specific places or times, thus becoming a key element to decode the work.
The exhibition is curated by Storm Janse van Rensburg, SCAD head curator of exhibitions.
Several works in this exhibition were commissioned by Rolls-Royce Motor Cars in partnership with SCAD and first exhibited in Miami in December 2016. This commission, curated by Laurie Ann Farrell, was developed as part of the Rolls-Royce Arts Programme.
