A new portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II following her 90th birthday by expressionist painter Stephen B. Whatley. The artist realised that there has not been, to his knowledge, a painting made of Her Majesty at The State Opening of Parliament; as she has done once a year for 63 years.

As with all his work Whatley sought to a deep essence of his subject and the painting was inspired by charcoal drawings and notes made watching the live BBC television broadcast of The Queen, wearing the Imperial State Crown, reading her address to Parliament on May 18; followed by notes made re-watching film footage.

A major contribution to his capturing Queen Elizabeth was the artist's memory of meeting and talking to the monarch in person in 2004, at a grand reception, at the Tower of London - for which Whatley was commissioned in 2000 to paint a series of 30 paintings, depicting the history of The Tower. He was touched by an aura of gentle humility in Her Majesty's presence.

Stephen B. Whatley's Tower of London commission is permanently reproduced outside London's Tower Hill Station, throughout Tower Hill Underpass, the main entrance portal to Her Majesty's Tower of London - a permanent art exhibit on show in London.

Abstract Expressionism in photography, inspired by well-known abstract artists of the mid-20th Century such as Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, Frank Bowling, Gerhardt Richter and orthers.

A view of the City of London painted in 1991 by expressionist artist Stephen B. Whatley, inspired by drawings made on location on there South Bank of The Thames. The oil painting was purchased by collectors over 20 years ago and the artist was happy to be able to visit the owners of the work recently, to photograph it digitally.

The painting was published in March 1992 in The Artist magazine in a beautiful feature entitled 'The Landscape as Background', by Robin Stemp; exploring both historical and contemporary paintings. Ms Stemp wrote: "…in Stephen B. Whatley's 'St Paul's From The South Bank' the coloured ground around the main subject is an extension of the yellow which makes up the cathedral. Our imagination is called into play and it is possible to 'see' a hot bright day with limpid shadows along the river and a high sun energetically heating the city below. In its golden beauty it is reminiscent of London on a Sunday when the city is in a temporary lull. In both this and the portrait of Valerie Singleton (also featured) the artist shows his mastery of the art of colours and emotional alchemy which can be made from using it with sensitivity and passion…"

The dome of St. Paul's Cathedral is an iconic symbol of permanence, especially since it survived the bombing of London during World War II; and features in several of Whatley's paintings of London - more of which can be seen here on Flickr and on his website.

The work of Stephen B. Whatley, which has been published in TIME magazine, is in private collections worldwide; in public collections including BBC Heritage, The Royal Collection of HM Queen Elizabeth II, London Transport Museum, Newman University & Westminster Cathedral; and his series of 30 paintings commissioned by the Tower of London are permanently reproduced throughout Tower Hill Underpass, outside Tower Hill Station, London - along the river, west of this view.

A new tribute in oils by expressionist artist Stephen B. Whatley to the 1950s Hollywood film actress Tandra Quinn. The Hollywood starlet and model appeared in 4 motion pictures in the early 1950s before retiring from the screen. Her exquisite iconic beauty is showcased in the now cult surreal science fiction movie, Mesa of Lost Women (USA 1952) which was the predominant inspiration for this portrait tribute.

The British painter - whose work has been published in TIME magazine - has long been a classic Hollywood film buff; and his interest lead him to research and contact Tandra Quinn in Texas, in 2005; since when they have enjoyed a heartfelt friendship.

Rosé Quartett - Oil painting by Viennese expressionist painter Max Oppenheimer (1885-1954). Recently displayed in Vienna's Leopold Museum, on loan from the City of Nürnberg.

Arnold Rosé (1863-1946), first violinist and founding member of the quartet, was from 1881 until 1938 a legendary concertmaster of the Vienna Court Opera (after WWI the Vienna State Opera) and of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.

Oppenheimer was himself an accomplished violinist, and it was his intention not only to depict the performing musicians and their personalities accurately but to project the atmosphere and intensity of their music-making. To this end he had them rehearse late Beethoven quartets at the sittings!

On recent visits to museums and galleries I've been trying out 35mm f:2 lenses - namely the Super Takumar 35mm f:2 Model I (the heavy one), the Super-Multi-Coated version of the Model II, and the HD Pentax FA 35mm f:2 AL.

My impression is that the Model II is not quite up to the standard of the Model I, which was no doubt a very ambitious and expensive piece of glass. Here the horizontal lines of the frame have slight barrel-distortion. If I correct it, the verticals become slightly distorted, so I've left it. There's also some CA on the edges of the frame.

Oh, and yes, this lens is radioactive - for an entertaining video on radioactive lenses, visit Simon's utak's You Tube channel.

I'll be posting more images from these lenses, hopefully in the very near future...

Berlin, "Municipal Baths Reloaded", Video Art and Light installations in the Lichtenberg Municipal Baths": Berlin city coat of arms in the version of the time with the wall crown on the bear, slightly expressionistically modified on the balcony of the gallery on the upper floor of the Small Hall

When Lichtenberg was elevated to the status of a town in 1907 and had its first town hall, the town council also planned the corresponding municipal facilities such as a district court, a hospital, a maternity home, schools and a public swimming pool. The municipality acquired a 3,800 square metre plot of land on Frankfurter Allee and set up a commission for the construction of a public baths, consisting of seven city councillors and seven citizen deputies. Architects even provided construction plans for such a public bathing facility during the First World War. The ground-breaking ceremony took place in 1919 and the foundations were laid. Because Lichtenberg was incorporated into Greater Berlin as a borough in 1920 and lost its city status (and no doubt also due to a shortage of funds immediately after the war), construction work was halted. It was not until 1925, after the inflation had been overcome, that building work resumed after the engineer-architects Rudolf Gleye and Otto Weis had updated the existing plans. The result was a multi-storey cubic building in the Expressionist style with - according to the ideas of the time - very modern fixtures and fittings. The Hubertusbad was inaugurated by the Lord Mayor of Berlin, Gustav Böß, on 2 February 1928. During the Second World War, a high-explosive bomb damaged the building on the north-west side, but it remained functional. Most of the windows were also broken by the blast waves. The baths were provisionally repaired. When new, light-flooded swimming pools were built in the eastern boroughs at the end of the 1960s in connection with the construction of entire new neighbourhoods, the Hubertus Baths lost its importance beyond the borough. In addition, construction defects, which had been present since completion, became increasingly serious, and in 1988 the large hall had to be closed. The reason was a defect in the water treatment and heating system that could no longer be repaired.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall and the gradual merging of the entire city, the regulations for such facilities in vigour in West Germany applied and there was no longer any money available for repairs. When the main water supply broke in 1991, the small hall and all other bathing facilities had to be closed. The small hall was then misused as a warehouse. In 2016, the Berlin Senate took a decision that brought the revitalisation of the baths a big step closer: the complex remains property of the state of Berlin. Since then, the Berlin Real Estate Management Administration (BIM) has been working on behalf of the city to find ways to reutilise the site. Due to the high investment costs and the inefficiency of the operation of the pools, it is no longer planned to resume bathing activities. The Lichtenberg Municipal Baths are therefore to become both a venue for events and a meeting centre in the neighbourhood. In order to achieve this goal in the long term, a two-stage plan was adopted and further developed with the participation of the public in a concretisation and planning workshop:

In the first construction phase, which was completed at the beginning of 2022, several tonnes of rubble were removed from the building and electrical connections and sanitary facilities were restored in the left-hand (eastern) part of the building. A wooden floor was laid over the pool of the former women's swimming pool, which has been used for exhibitions and other events since 2022. Up to 200 people can be seated on this parquet floor. Temporary events take place here, like the one we visited. It is called ‘Municipal Baths Reloaded’ and takes guests on an exciting tour of the building, which comes back to life with impressive light installations and over 157 digital artworks in every corner.

I took an alternate route in to work one morning because of transit delays & happened upon this gorgeous Art Deco skyscraper. It turns out to be the old Western Union Building, dating from 1930. Wikipedia identifies the main style as German Expressionist. I only got 1 shot off of the lobby proper, which spans a city block & has an entrance at each end, before I was chased off with “no pictures allowed.” But I got plenty of shots of the exterior & the striking, cathedral-like foyer outside the main lobby. The frieze elements are inverted skyscrapers.

Skyscrapers of this era used a decorative facing, often tile, over the structural skin. The building looks like brick, both outside & inside, but structurally it's steel frame, not masonry. So this stuff is the thickness of tile, not the thickness of structural brick. For me the use of 'brick' in this shallow, stylized overhead vaulting, which (one's instincts cry out) would not be structurally viable if made of actual bricks, leaves one wondering "why doesn't it fall down?" & lends a kind of dynamic tension.

A new tribute painting of the Patron Saint of Cancer Sufferers, Saint Peregrine by expressionist artist Stephen B. Whatley.

Saint Peregrine is also the Patron Saint of AIDS and other illnesses as well as Cancer - so may all those who meditate upon the image, created and infused with prayers, receive light, hope, protection and ultimate healing relief. Peace.

The artist - a Catholic convert since 2011 - often gets, through prayer, what he feels a 'Divine Push' to paint such Christian tributes and felt directed to paint Saint Peregrine, with prayers for healing, light and hope for those suffering cancer in his life - and worldwide.

He had a deep feeling the day of painting - 21 February - was a significant date; and later, after painting, realised it was the day in 1935 that Jesus had appeared to the Polish nun, Sister ( since 2000, Saint) Faustina, requesting she seek an artist and have a painting made depicting His Divine Mercy.

Stephen B. Whatley has painted several Divine Mercy images over the years; some of which were exhibited in his 2013 exhibition 'Paintings From Prayer' at London's Westminster Cathedral. There is a permanent walkway of his series of 30 paintings for the Tower of London, outside Tower Hill Station, London.

Peregrine Laziosi (Italy, c.1260-1345) experienced a miracle of healing in his own life, at 60, when a cancerous growth in his leg threatened amputation. The night before the amputation he spent praying before a fresco of The Crucifixion and later in a sleep state felt Jesus descend from The Cross to touch his leg. The next day the doctors found no trace of the cancer and he was pronounced cured; word spreading quickly of the power of Trust in the Lord.

The National Shrine of Saint Peregrine is at Our Lady of Sorrows Basilica in Chicago, Illinois, USA

This new painting took, alongside prayers, inspiration from a classic prayer card, acquired in New York in 2015.

An artist does not always get to see where his acquired paintings hang ; around the world.

Expressionist artist Stephen B. Whatley was delighted to receive a warm email and this photograph of his portrait tribute of film star Elizabeth Taylor on the wall of its owner's home in The Hague, The Netherlands - with his pet cat.

The oil painting formed part of the artist's 1993 exhibition, Hollywood Gold at London's National Theatre on the South Bank in London.

The art collector wrote wanting to express how much joy the painting gives - specifically in his words that 'it continues to be my most prized possession' - since the original was bought 28 years ago - and that it has travelled with him, through times in Azerbaijan, Canada and the USA.

Gratifying affirmation for any artist.

The work of Stephen B. Whatley is in private collections worldwide, including many states of the USA; and in public collections including BBC Heritage, The Royal Collection, London Transport Museum, Newman University & Westminster Cathedral.

Detail from a recent tribute to Saint Michael The Archangel, painted by expressionist artist Stephen B. Whatley; created with prayers during the last two days of June 2024.

Saint Michael is seen as the Warrior Angel, fighting off Satan in heaven and protecting God's chosen people on earth from evil and enemies. St Michael occupies a special place in the church, appointed its protector; and his Intercession is encouraged to defeat the evil in the world - and for the protection from danger for anyone in their every day life.

Stephen B. Whatley is a Catholic convert, a calling he felt through his spiritual search to survive early tragedy in his life; and his exhibition, "Paintings From Prayer" was staged at London's Westminster Cathedral in 2013.

The British London-based artist gets what he humbly feels a 'Divine Push' to paint tributes of faith, alongside his other work; indeed this is the artist's third tribute to Saint Michael.

A large body of Whatley's work is on public display every day in the City of London, just outside the Tower of London - where his series of 30 paintings commissioned by Historic Royal Palaces, 20 years ago, vibrantly chart the history of The Tower.

As a permanent art exhibit reproduced throughout the walkway leading from Tower Hill Station they form a bright and colourful entrance to the Tower of London.

A Walter Netsch/ SOM project built in Colorado Springs, Colorado, from1956 to 1962. The chapel, in a cold temperate, rural campus area, is portrayed in an Expressionist Modern style. We toured the U.S. Air Force Academy on a Saturday afternoon. There were two weddings scheduled, so unfortunately, we were not able to photograph the gorgeous interior of the building this trip. This was my first visit to Colorado, and I fell in love with the area. I am anticipating a return trip.
